FPS games (eg.) are just throwbacks to when the hardware to render anything more than a hand & gun on-screen simultaneous wasn't available. It's a defunct game genre that hasn't evolved for nigh on 20yrs. They're popular for this very reason too, that if you've played one you've played them all - no learning curve/for casuals.

Oh, also, if a Trapper has any traps down, everyone on her team can see their location and status on the HUD. If an enemy gets stuck in one, you hear a nice, sharp sound and the icon changes to a closed state. That way you can also use it as a detector to know when an enemy is in that location, and anyone nearby has a few seconds to run over and shoot the trapped enemy in the head.

For the record, the Trapper (sniper) trait is traps. Thus the name of the class. She has an infinite amount of bear traps that she can put down anywhere (but you can only have two out at a time, if you place more the old ones disappear). If an enemy walks into a trap, he gets completely stunned and can't move or shoot for a LONG time. Something like ten seconds. If you can't snipe well, try to focus on laying traps near objectives and help out with the pistol. She's good like that too.
