Yea, the tile "Hippies in LA", but I do not see hippies. I see bunch of students and anti war demonstrators. The musics should be the quick silver messenger band, Grateful De Big Brother and the Holding Company, Fifty Foot Hose, Country Joe and the Fish, The Great Society, the Byrds, Iron Butterfly, Love, Spirit,New the Blues Magoos, the Blues Project, Bermuda Triangle Band, Electric Prunes, and the Third Bardo 13th Floor Elevators.
I suppose your definition of Hippies is different from my own. When I was growing up my folks always referred to themselves as hippies, and so...that's what I call them. Now if you were to use the American heritage Dictionary's definition of Hippie: "A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles. " Then indeed, my parents....were that.
If you use another definition....than perhaps not. Either way, I don't particularly care, it's just an endless semantics argument, that wastes time. As for the music, I was more using music that my mom said she loved to listen to when she was young, more than I was trying to address the exact time period. I'm not trying to be famous making youtube videos as much as make something nice for my parents to watch. You folks watching it and liking it is just a bonus.
I would have been the same age as those young children being carried by the parents at this anti-war protest,so this is extremely interesting to me. My parents were from the previous generation, not Hippies. Fantastic that there are records of this time created by the people involved, not the media gatekeepers.
Nice use of stop motion animation. The frenetic, jerky shooting style matches with the tumultuous times back then.
wow this is amazing! a piece of art.. Thank you so MUCH!!! Your parents had a great great idea saving those beautiful moments and now you sharing this to us... i'm in atonishment...

The songs which appeared on this groovy "flowerchilds" video was: Kashmir - Led Zeppelin Purple haze - Jimi Hendrix Strawberry Fields Forever - Beatles Sunshine of of your love - Cream Paint it black - the Rolling Stones. Peace man.
One of the best videos I've seen on YT in the last year. Mucho thanks for taking the time to edit these and add the 60's soundtrack. For 7 minutes I was back in 1969. Keep them coming.
Ha Ha! So cool to see those older ladies marching for Peace at about 5:24. I love these videos. Thanks to you and your parents for making these available here on YouTube. God Bless You!
Wow, your parents were ahead of their time. They had a lot of patience to wait for the advent of the internet and YouTube to get these videos posted. Great soundtrack! I wasn't around then, but it seems like 60's were very interesting times. Thanks for posting.
I am proud of my folks to no end, they did so well, and have contributed so much to humanity period, labeling them as hippi burn-outs just because they lived back then is such an ignorant sillyness that should be avoided. I would be nothing without their support and inspiration PERIOD.
BTW, my parents aren't burn-outs. If they don't mind I may post their names if they don't mind and just by googling you will find my Dad went on to become very successful in the film business, and my mother became a teacher/writer, both with their masters from UCSD, and two children...who low and behold...AREN'T on drugs, and doing fine. Their 1st daughter(my sister) about to get her PhD in Geophysics from UCLA, and me working on my degree in digital arts at UCSD.
id like a copy of that dvd, it looks totally awesome.
and all you bigoted scum who think hippies are all about drugs GTFO.
or at least read an article on your countrys past. ironic how everyone thinks of hippies as burnouts when they dont know what hippies were truly about. theres just as much drug use today as there ever was, its just not as big of a deal cos sooo many more people do it nowadays.
Our generation is nothing compared to that generation. We just sit around while people then got out a and protested, a lot of it had to just do with the draft but it was still cool. PEACE.
Hippies DID NOT destroy the world. I don't even know how anyone can say that. They also didn't create the drug 'problem' I think the government did when it started to outlaw drugs. I swear, people are so paranoid about every little thing, so afraid of what they don't think is proper or normal. People, please, get a grip. Hippies were only trying to help.
That was amazing. I wish I lived during those years with all the beautiful people. But I guess at heart I'm stuck during this era. Thanks for posting. Oh and the fold out bed thing was trippy. Peace
It's cool how things like this can be archived and saved for future generations who will have no idea what the times were like. I think its important to save things like this, even if they wer ejust home movies, they can show us a glimpse of a time when things were different. When the political landscape was being shaped by the youth of the time and how everyone wanted to make a difference. We need more of that kind of thinking now. -cont-
cool video and I think that backlap is sorely mistaken in blaming our problems of today on the hippies. I personally wish I had lived during the 60's but I do the best I can living when I do.
Um, the drug "problem" became a problem when the government started making drugs illegal. Dont blame today's drug problem on the 60's or hippies, blame it on the paranoid ultra-nationalistic government who was scared to death of the countercultural that people like the hippies were living. It went against the "status quo", that is the current anti-communist, pro nationalistic foriegn and domestic policy of the post World War II era.
"The drug problem of today" as you put it, was not the fault of hippies, it is the result of the overly harsh penalties for drugs, which has led to a black market for drugs and is responsible for millinos of deaths here in the United states and also in south america where violent drug lords vie for power and control weak governments using fear and violence.
Well, I suppose it depends on what your definition of Hippie is. My folks were both film students, AND hippies...and I believe the protest at the end of this video was full of hippies protesting the war, but you know like I said, depends on your definition.
That was great, a look at a time in our parent's history that was a start of a new age, I loved those ant-war clips at the end ,I've never seen them before and the songs were great added that touch to the mood.
You should check out the video response I did for it just a couple months ago. The video is of me, my friend, and my sister...just random clips trying to immitate the video. It's on my profile or you can check the comments section of this video where I posted the video response.
This video rocks! I hope America captures a bit of what you guys had back then...again! I wish you said where that rally was at the end, was it the mall in D.C. where Abie Hoffman was or UCLA?
you can create more on your computer than could be dreamed of in the 60's.no matter when you live it's the best of times and the worst of times.create your own reality.alot of the hippie/groovy weird art dudes from the 60's sold out and became greed oriented consumer war pigs.but hey this old footage does capture some fun spirit.
start picking their brains more, that whole generation and the feeling in the air back then will never be again and it's hard for kids to understand how great that time was...
