I remember when I was a kid and saw this episode. For the rest of the series I wondered, "is he ever going to recover?" It all makes sense now... damn English dubs ruining anime.
In Japan everything was different but in america they kept him alive like in the recent "Voltron Force" the new Voltron made by America as a continuation to the series shows Sven alive but it is America's version and really not the best cartoon compared to the original.
Is it weird that I almost want to start watching this show even tho it came out 14 years before I was born? I had only ever herd a little bit about it from my parents who didn't even watch it for the most part but it seems like it might be entertaining... in the Japanese Version. Lol, the reason I clicked on this vid was because I like the name but who knows this seems neat...
@VoltronLionForce1984 Well, as Princess Allura was my role model throughout a fair bit of my early childhood, I dreaded any "Sven episode" in which he piloted the Blue Lion rather than her (it was not until I was 27 with the Blue Lion DVD that I realized there were only ~6 such episodes...lol). However, I doubt I was ever so bloodthirsty as to actually wish him dead.... ;)
GoLion and all the original Japanese sources are THE BEST!! Not the butchered american crap that they pump out...they totally dumbed out the Power Rangers and Masked Rider...oh well...guess it's for the best.
the Golion team. If anything, I think that would have screwed them all up emotionally, especially if he was a robeast to boot. while they'd all be lamenting hurting their friend, he'd defeat voltron if given enough strength. it's a stretch, but all that to say, it would have been nice to see Shirogane (the real Shirogane) make a return appearance.
P.S. the swedish voice was over the top and I honestly believe it was used to dissuade kids from getting attached to his character. Bad form IMO
It's not so hard to believe he had a twin brother considering we knew next to nothing about the past of the five space explorers. while I dislike the fact that Shirogane was killed, I do like Shirogane 100 times better than Sven. Shirogane was portrayed as Kogane's right hand man when it came to advice in several occassions. The wisdom Shirogane represented was nowhere to be found in Sven. Personally, I don't know why the japanese writers didn't just have the witch revive him as a weapon against
Sven was So much better in the Japanese Version . . They made him out to Be kinda Like Bruce Lee, whereas the US version gave him that Retarted Accent . .
@xtraflo While they did make his swedish accent over the top, I fully agree that Shirogane was a much better character. In my mind, Shirogane and Sven are two separate characters. Shirogane took his oath to Defend Arus and even if he did suvive and fall in love with romelle, etc, I doubt the original Shirogane would have so easily broken his oath. Don't forget, they were always trying to find a suitable pilot for blue lion so when Shiro returned and he didn't take up his role again was lame.
@fading07 Yeah, I do remember them Attempting to Refill the Blue Lion - and I remember not liking the Show ever since. Of all the Charachters, I of course Liked Sven the most - But Jesus - That was forever ago...
I saw this as a kid and i remember teh whole fight sequence being much longer. Teh cat and witch slashed him up numerous times, leaving scratches all over his body. Does anyone else recall this or am i thinking of a different show?
@killustrator Yeah, the robeast stood over Sven and stabbed him in the back with his claw when he was down. They edited this clip for some reason and skipped that part.
Honestly this is one of the few cartoons that i actually agree with the censorship, I read up some of the differences and good lord was the original cartoon brutal. Torture, death, rape, these are not things I would want to be watching as a 5 year old child nor would i want my child to be watching such things.
In later episodes Shirogone's grave is visted, thus confirming his death. He was but a throwaway character to let Princess Fala ride the blue lion. However, Quiet's death is insignificant compared to the death toll in of giant robot shows such as Ideon, Dunbine, Zambot 3, Gundam, Zeta Gunadam, and L-Gaim.
I remember being a little kid in grade 2 or 3, I think, watching this episode and seeing blood and death for the first time in anime and I have to admit it disturbed me.
I always wondered why such a superficial wound would keep Sven from coming back. Even when they saw him later, he never expressed a desire to return. Now I know why. Thanks!
@char675 aha... please tell me that you don't really think that way. Otherwise I'll have to say that because Voltron shouted a lot he's Italian or something.
hmmm i actually remember this death scene in fact its the scene i remember the most from voltron . i live in the usa but way back in the day when i watched this as a kid i member seein all that drama in this ep and after it was over my friends and i were like mannnnn .
so im not sure why some people saw an edited version of this while the one i saw had the whole death thing . the one i saw was english dubbed also .
@JacobDeadman I think WEP edited out sven's (Shirogane's) death to make the reunion scenes later in the series possible. Although i do agree, they should have left this scene as it was.
Finally seeing Golion (I got to rent it), I find it 5 times better than the American version. You miss a lot of story in the American version.
The only thing going for the American version is the Voltron name, having the voice of Optimus Prime speaking in the intro, and the English version character names.
Other than that, the japanese version is way better.
even the music is different, wtf?? and they cut out that last scene?? fuck man do american kids not care about dead characters?? oh shit man that made me laugh
@taz014l It's not that American kids don't care about dead characters. The producers of Voltron used three different animes to make this show. They felt that the excessive violence in the original Go-Lion series was a bit too much for an after school cartoon so they changed it. It may or may not have been the right choice but it is what happened. Blaming the public for the creators decision is pointless at best.
@WRK004 Plus, they knew there were certain things the censors wouldn't go for so instead of showing them the unedited version and then having to go back with a laundry list of editing rules, they just took care of things themselves beforehand.
@Sotnas That is true as well. If there is one thing about corporate America it is that micromanagement is commonplace and you always have someone on your back telling you what is appropriate and what is not. Voltron may be a watered down version of Go-Lion but there is no denying that it had impact on future animators and artists. Plus being in the target demographic when it was popular I can say for me it was my favorite show as a kid.
I just started watching GoLion and this comparison clip left out one crucial part-when Quiet fell to the ground, the beast brought its claw down again, the camera specifically focused on the claw. You then saw Quiet's face twisted in pain and the sound typically used for when people are skewered/penetrated in Anime shows. This second blow mortally injures him, not the whack against the neck.
In the American verson Sven was held captive on Planet Doom. They never even treid to rescue him. He got out on his own. Now if that was GI Joe they would have gotten Sven out by the third commercial.
I don't get what's with people thinking they can't have death in American kids programs, people have been getting away with it in movies at children for years.
@Darklink5000 Which was weird, because in the series the Constructicons actually cut Prime into pieces and left him for dead. Turned his parts into other things and threw the head and a few other bits away. Guess they also never thought abotuthe matrix of leadership. Primes chest was open in a few episodes in the series, unless he didnt get the matrix form Vector Segma or whoever yet.
So that is what happened to him. I remember Sven getting bit by Haggar's cat and then he quit the Voltron force, and then he showed up again in a later episode. Thanks for posting
My 10-year old mind? Shit I was 6 when I was watching Voltron in 1984. I loved it. I still hate myself for breaking my Voltron toy, but hell I was a little kid so I didn't know any better. Long live Voltron!
@brianreal Because it was so long ago, I don't know what year I started watching Voltron...but if it was during its original run, I would have been 3!
I'm the same age. When I got my Voltron it was the crappy pre-assembled lion mech that didn't transform So I unscrewed all the parts and eventually lost them. lol
Damnnnnnn thanks for this. Didn't know. Us weak Americans even had a episode where Sven hooks up with some chick, thus him leaving. We thought he was alive and well.
In the US version, Sven recovered and returned later on, but in GOLion, his twin brother or something replaced him!
Isn't that just stupid? I think I'd rather have had him survive if he's just gonna be replaced by a lookalike, even if he never is a main Voltron pilot again.
@joesomenumbers There were episodes that the US version made that came after the original GoLion ended. Or, there were episodes with Shirogane's twin on Planet Doom, which the US version just claimed to be Sven.
@pmgpc69 Yes. For most of the series the Princess did pilot Sven's Lion... that's not what I meant. Toward the end of the show, Sven returned. I don't recall if he piloted his Lion again or not (I don't think so), but he did show up again.
@KojiTsunami The reason that happened was because he became a very popular character during his time on the show so they gave him a twine to make the fans happy.
@TronZEROPi Is that what happened? I thought his twin was part of the Golion story. It's the first time I've seen someone comment about that. I'm no expert but I haven't seen an explanation about that until now.
Yeah I remember the cat fucking him up but I always thought he went off to the hospital then became a farmer or something on a different planet. Dude I must have been tripping when I was 6 watching this.
@Cordisxaltun Ur right, it's one thing if it's a lion or something but Sven got taken down by a cat to the jugular. Reminds me of the story recently where they guy got into a fight with a cat in his house, had a knife and still ended up having to get airlifted to the hospital. Srsly, htf does that happen...
The weird thing is, i thought i remember seeing him die in the us version when i was a kid?! I did not watch this since i was a kid and i vaguely remember him dying and seeing it in english.
I heard Go Lion was canceled in Japan, but the show was continued for America since it was huge here, and that included bringing Sven back later in the series. Does anyone know if this is true?
in the usa it's called voltron defender of the universe. sven didn't die but was badly injured and leaves the voltron force. the princess takes over the blue lion. sven
reappears in later episodes toward the end. their is also a car voltron series too. watch season 1 of lion voltron on youtube under WEP.
Yeah. GoLion was horrible at standing out, best anime ever or not. Toei made a million mech shows. However, people liked Voltron in America because there weren't that many robot shows at the time, so Voltron, to this day, is easily in the top 5 most popular cartoons list from the 80's. Man, Voltron is terrible after seeing GoLion. I'll bet WEP just made Voltron for kids so they could sell action figures... WEP also ruined Dairugger and Saber Rider. If only FUNimation got it... sigh.
@koutesu It wasn't just canceled in Japan, it just ran it's course so the last episode was ep 52. That's the one where Lotor was killed by Shirogane's brother which was part of the original Golion story. It was the series finale. Since it was popular in America, the creators of Golion made more episodes for the Voltron version. Zarkon and Lotor did not die in this version but "got away". Merla, Queen of Darkness took over for the last 20 episodes.
am i tripping or didn't on the US version doesn't swen come back as a captian of the guard or some kind of space ranger guy who works elsewhere in the galaxy? please correct me if i am wrong.
Thank you for posting this. The editing of the death & violence i.m.h.o. was probably more to being allowed to change the premise of Golion in order to call the series Voltron & also to see Golion as the series creators intended it by buying the subtitled dvd for the viewers of various countries to know the original names of the characters of both versions of this fantastic anime series.
The Japanese vesion was much better. When I was a kid and watched this stuff we used to make fun of how no one ever died despite the fact that they were always fighting.
You don't pay attention when you read, do you. I won't be rude to you for the simple fact that you gave me the same courtesy. I never said this cartoon in particular was made in the USA. I was simply giving an honest opinion about cartoons made in North America by North Americans. Please, Analyze what you read before you give your opinion on someone's comment.
Ah... if you look at my avatar Shirogane is on it, a sign he's my favorite character in this show. Why did he sacrifice his life for Mr.Macho (Who isin't cool)? Couldn't Kurogane just DIE!? (echo) DIE! DIE! DIE!
I remember seeing this when I was in the Philippines, I was under 9 at the time. It didn't bother me much; look how I turned out. I actually learned that people can die. Unlike, G.I. Joe of the 80s where I learned that everyone can ditch a 50 million dollar plan just in time, just before it is hit by a missile. Or they just disappear and go into another dimension, like in Dragonball Z.
@flyppster G.I. Joe was just ridiculous in how characters escaped death. I wanted to face-palm when Snake Eyes survives lethal radiation poisoning (that actually makes him glow) by being giving special herbs by some old due living in a cabin in the woods. I saw that when i re-watched the show and thought, "You have got to be fucking kidding me,".
that wouldn't have melted my mind seeing as how i was already watching sailormoon at the time too. And Mamoru was ALWAYS dieing or getting hurt. but Shirogane was my absolute favorite....guess cuz I like men that wear all black I guess. I had a crush on keith too, but it was still hard to watch after the princess took his place. I kept hoping that shirogane would return in the cut version. Hurray for voltron! Robot of all Giant Robots!!! (Barring those guys in Macross...:)
I have to lol at the horrible voice acting though. I know death would've been a touchy subject, but I can't help but find it funny that the characters had like zero emotion even though they were crying. :P
Well, I think that in their minds, the TV people did this to make sure that graphic death scenes like this one wouldn't make young viewers feel uncomfortable about death... I know it is very fullfilling to see everything about the series, but, it might just be too dramatic for younger viewers... I know we here about alot of death in news, but by cutting out dramatics of death, the younger viewers will feel less scared and will be censored from the 'hows' of that person died...
you gotta remember this was made in the early or mid 80's TV was way different back then especially for kids in the US now a days everyone is getting shot up or some shit so they don't have to worry about it as much I guess
in the japanese version sven dies. This was thought to be to extreme for the american audiance so a few seasons later in the american version they changed it so that he had actually survived on planet doom he later fell in love with princess Alura's cousin princess Romel.

In the American verson Sven was held captive on Planet Doom. They never even treid to rescue him. He got out on his own. Now if that was GI Joe they would have gotten Sven out by the third commercial.

Little known fact:
Shirogane was nicknamed "Quiet"
Kurogane, at 1:13, and Suzuizhi at 1:50 weren't telling someone to be quiet, they were referring to Shirogane.
EliroX904 2 years ago
I don't get what's with people thinking they can't have death in American kids programs, people have been getting away with it in movies at children for years.
dragonstormx 2 years ago 6
Remember the Transformers animated movie when they killed Optimus Prime an how kids reacted. Same reason here
Darklink5000 1 year ago
@Darklink5000 but he was a autbot not a human theres a diffrence
Valis77 1 year ago
@Darklink5000 Which was weird, because in the series the Constructicons actually cut Prime into pieces and left him for dead. Turned his parts into other things and threw the head and a few other bits away. Guess they also never thought abotuthe matrix of leadership. Primes chest was open in a few episodes in the series, unless he didnt get the matrix form Vector Segma or whoever yet.

@dragonstormx Yeah, Disney has been doing it for years. I still remember being shocked when Ursula is impaled in "The Little Mermaid".
Sotnas 6 months ago
So that is what happened to him. I remember Sven getting bit by Haggar's cat and then he quit the Voltron force, and then he showed up again in a later episode. Thanks for posting
dsrodc77 2 years ago
My 10-year old mind? Shit I was 6 when I was watching Voltron in 1984. I loved it. I still hate myself for breaking my Voltron toy, but hell I was a little kid so I didn't know any better. Long live Voltron!
brianreal 2 years ago
@brianreal Because it was so long ago, I don't know what year I started watching Voltron...but if it was during its original run, I would have been 3!
sjm757 2 years ago
I'm the same age. When I got my Voltron it was the crappy pre-assembled lion mech that didn't transform So I unscrewed all the parts and eventually lost them. lol
TiMMYSQUibbLES 2 years ago
hate the eng version..it does terrible injustice to the series
Whiteandorange 2 years ago
Damnnnnnn thanks for this. Didn't know. Us weak Americans even had a episode where Sven hooks up with some chick, thus him leaving. We thought he was alive and well.
DeleteThisMF 2 years ago
Sorry if I offend anyone but I like the Japanese voices a lot better.
clashb 2 years ago 4
I agree. The acting was just terrible in the English version. They had no emotion. Lol
Moritasan2040 2 years ago
Ah, but it made more sense in the US version!
In the US version, Sven recovered and returned later on, but in GOLion, his twin brother or something replaced him!
Isn't that just stupid? I think I'd rather have had him survive if he's just gonna be replaced by a lookalike, even if he never is a main Voltron pilot again.
KojiTsunami 2 years ago 18
Probably fans wanted GoLion's Sven to come back in some form or another like Lockon Stratos from Gundam 00. Either way, I found this vid to be funny.
chinito77 2 years ago
@KojiTsunami
It was his younger brother who resembled him, but it wasn't a twin.
DoctorAnonymousMD 1 year ago
@KojiTsunami Agree totally.
TerrickTerran 1 year ago
@KojiTsunami Is that what happened? 'Cause I remembered Sven showing up in later episodes.
joesomenumbers 1 year ago
@joesomenumbers There were episodes that the US version made that came after the original GoLion ended. Or, there were episodes with Shirogane's twin on Planet Doom, which the US version just claimed to be Sven.
magnusdammit 1 year ago
@magnusdammit yeah and then the twin died while killing Lotor
Evilseed1 11 months ago
@KojiTsunami His twin did not replace him. The princess did. She replaced him in both the Japanese and American versions.
pmgpc69 11 months ago
@pmgpc69 Yes. For most of the series the Princess did pilot Sven's Lion... that's not what I meant. Toward the end of the show, Sven returned. I don't recall if he piloted his Lion again or not (I don't think so), but he did show up again.
KojiTsunami 11 months ago
@KojiTsunami The reason that happened was because he became a very popular character during his time on the show so they gave him a twine to make the fans happy.
TronZEROPi 10 months ago
@TronZEROPi Is that what happened? I thought his twin was part of the Golion story. It's the first time I've seen someone comment about that. I'm no expert but I haven't seen an explanation about that until now.
pmgpc69 10 months ago
@pmgpc69 The backup twin is a common way of bringing back a dead character.

"Yeah I remember the cat fucking him up"
ROFL!!!! SERIOUSLY???!?!? You know that's enough to make any man lose all dignity and pride.
The day a cat "fucks you up" is the day you can't call yourself a man anymore.
Cordisxaltun 6 months ago 2
@Cordisxaltun Well to be fair to Sven it was a alien cat and he is Swedish.
sortedevaras 6 months ago
@Cordisxaltun Ur right, it's one thing if it's a lion or something but Sven got taken down by a cat to the jugular. Reminds me of the story recently where they guy got into a fight with a cat in his house, had a knife and still ended up having to get airlifted to the hospital. Srsly, htf does that happen...

The weird thing is, i thought i remember seeing him die in the us version when i was a kid?! I did not watch this since i was a kid and i vaguely remember him dying and seeing it in english.

Naw he recovered, and he even helped the team later. I think he hooked up with some chick.

I heard Go Lion was canceled in Japan, but the show was continued for America since it was huge here, and that included bringing Sven back later in the series. Does anyone know if this is true?
koutesu 2 years ago 2
in the usa it's called voltron defender of the universe. sven didn't die but was badly injured and leaves the voltron force. the princess takes over the blue lion. sven
reappears in later episodes toward the end. their is also a car voltron series too. watch season 1 of lion voltron on youtube under WEP.
rydangel2 2 years ago
If only FUNimation got it... sigh.
EliroX904 2 years ago
@koutesu It wasn't just canceled in Japan, it just ran it's course so the last episode was ep 52. That's the one where Lotor was killed by Shirogane's brother which was part of the original Golion story. It was the series finale. Since it was popular in America, the creators of Golion made more episodes for the Voltron version. Zarkon and Lotor did not die in this version but "got away". Merla, Queen of Darkness took over for the last 20 episodes.
pmgpc69 10 months ago
am i tripping or didn't on the US version doesn't swen come back as a captian of the guard or some kind of space ranger guy who works elsewhere in the galaxy? please correct me if i am wrong.

EliroX904 2 years ago
So sven didn't die in the US version, right?
tubernery 2 years ago
No, I think he was taken away---injured, recovering at the hospital. It allowed the Princess to take over at Blue Lion.
Tigerman1138 2 years ago
Thank you for posting this. The editing of the death & violence i.m.h.o. was probably more to being allowed to change the premise of Golion in order to call the series Voltron & also to see Golion as the series creators intended it by buying the subtitled dvd for the viewers of various countries to know the original names of the characters of both versions of this fantastic anime series.

Or they just disappear and go into another dimension, like in Dragonball Z.
flyppster 2 years ago
@flyppster G.I. Joe was just ridiculous in how characters escaped death. I wanted to face-palm when Snake Eyes survives lethal radiation poisoning (that actually makes him glow) by being giving special herbs by some old due living in a cabin in the woods. I saw that when i re-watched the show and thought, "You have got to be fucking kidding me,".
Sotnas 6 months ago
@Sotnas Wait! You mean herbs by old men in cabins IS NOT an effective treatment for radiation poisoning?!

that wouldn't have melted my mind seeing as how i was already watching sailormoon at the time too.

Newsflash: the cat was buying time for the deathblack beastman, the cat couldn't kill Shirogane alone.
EliroX904 2 years ago
I have to lol at the horrible voice acting though. I know death would've been a touchy subject, but I can't help but find it funny that the characters had like zero emotion even though they were crying. :P

linksword01 2 years ago
haha they censored it in america
why? Like a cartoon death was going to destroy kids' minds.
hell I see everyday on the news about a fucking shooting or murder.
america got the most violent crimes in the world, like that censored Voltron some how is worse. Dumbass fucking TV people.
JadeDragon007 2 years ago 4
Well, I think that in their minds, the TV people did this to make sure that graphic death scenes like this one wouldn't make young viewers feel uncomfortable about death... I know it is very fullfilling to see everything about the series, but, it might just be too dramatic for younger viewers... I know we here about alot of death in news, but by cutting out dramatics of death, the younger viewers will feel less scared and will be censored from the 'hows' of that person died...
Chakmon212 2 years ago
you gotta remember this was made in the early or mid 80's TV was way different back then especially for kids in the US now a days everyone is getting shot up or some shit so they don't have to worry about it as much I guess
didujustfart89 2 years ago
how the hell would they manage to cover THAT up?
thesunhurtsmyeyes 2 years ago
Easy, just don't include it in there to be seen... That's all... But there is a chance that it will leak out some way or the other...
Chakmon212 2 years ago
in the japanese version sven dies. This was thought to be to extreme for the american audiance so a few seasons later in the american version they changed it so that he had actually survived on planet doom he later fell in love with princess Alura's cousin princess Romel.
ROTLDzombi 2 years ago
I haven't seen the Japanese version, but as a kid, I've just assumed that Sven had died anyway with the princess taking over the blue lion.
