nice vid. Can the settings that you used be used for taking picture of the moon as well? I have one good shot on flickr but now I can not replicate it.
@bxxder2008 I have a Canon 7D, I can't find any crop mode, so I guess I can't do it. I also see a post about it is not the same if you crop after either. Why would canon remove features from a more expensive camera.
This is real cool, but have a question. What did you use to crop the video, and also how did you take a video of 5184x3456 resolution. I have a canon 7D, I can't set video that high. I am a little confused.
you didnt hear about it?? last night the moon lost its gravitational pull so its slowly moving away from the earth and the oceans will rise up and the whole earth will be under water and we will all die!!
just a quick question. i've got a 600D and it's got a digital zoom of 10x while in HD mode. I think that it keeps the HD also while it zooms in and looks pretty good to me in full 10x. I don't even think the 600D has a 640x480 crop mode. is the 600D's 10x digital zoom better/similar to the 7x crop mode on the 550d?
I´ll get the 550D in a few weeks and i can´t find any information about the crop mode on the internet, so..can you give me some information pls?? this vid is perfect, i´ve never seen something like that before!
@matt999b is simple, 550D record video with full HD 1920x1080, after crop mode it become 640x480, not reduce the resolution, is crop from resolution, and you would see things bigger within the crop^^
@MrShakaboommm You've lost me now. How will putting it in crop mode make "things bigger". It doesn't anything bigger than in full HD, it just records less pixels.
@matt999b Crop mode only uses a 1:1 pixel resolution from the center 640x480. In HD it bins all of the sensor hence you don't get the same crop magnification. It has been reported on extensively all over the net. I think its all pretty self explanatory which leaves me wondering why you seem to be the only one finding this hard to grasp.
This was one of the first thing I did when we got the 550D..Get my Pentax lens adapter tomorrow that will allow me to put on my old 500mm n' my 2x teli converter.. Can't wait to get some great shots like this.. Fantastic Job!
@ImmersionImagery I hope you have a good mount for that setup when you get the 2x. The equivalent focal length in crop mode will be like the length of a football field ;-) Even without the 2x its a struggle. I do have a geared head though which makes positioning a lot easier. Good luck and lets see some results.
Well it's shaking for two reasons. 1) My movement as I walk away from the tripod. 2) There were small gusts of wind and I wasn't in a sheltered area. The shimmering is obviously the atmosphere.
I want that lens :p

This is when things get down right amazing, when the moon is no longer smooth round but has a slight jagged edge because of the picture quality.

Given the crop factor of the sensor, the 500mm would be equivalent to 800mm (500x1.6) right? :)
Its really awesome you can do this with the 550D, love to see more moon shots :)

@martinheck1:
This is not being tracked and is on a fixed head tripod. Which is why the moon is traversing across the field of view.

Thanks for all your comments.

focus123kimo 1 year ago 10
@focus123kimo buy a 1600mm x 2 x 7 = 22400mm very nice :D
Halfback1990 1 year ago
@focus123kimo - In T2i (550D) movie crop mode, the 1.6 sensor crop does not apply. Only the 7.2 multiplication applies, so it is 500mm x 7.2 = 3600
