Hey guys ! I'm 13 years old and I do all the timed events & some western pleasure . If y'all can check out my videos & comment with tips & advice then I'd greatly appreciate it . All of us youtube people need to help each other out .! I hope y'all check out my stuff and have a good day everyone !
Ok, im starting my new gelding but im doing it from the ground up, Where do i even start on this guy? Ive ridden all m life but Im just not sure where to starton this guy please help me!!!!
@racer3cans first you should probably introduce your horse to the barrel's, just cause its probably safer then getting on and going right from the start.. its usually better if your horse neck reins so you have one hand to steer, and the other to hang on to the horn. then its your choice if you want to lead him around the barrels first or to get on and walk him around them so he gets use to the pattern he has to go in, then go on from there, hope thats helpful :)
What an idiot she is. She is setting her horse up all wrong. And her horse is swinging its butt out around the barrel. You DONT wanna use your inside leg, that only pushes the horses hip out. You wanna use your inside leg, so his hip stays nice and tucked toward the barrel. When the horses hip is swinging out, he has no power. She is a moron.
@3barrels2souls1dream Oh lord, please know what you're talking about. Barrel horses (And any horse really) should curve their body around the leg when asked or move out when asked. It's two completely differant cues. The horses have to bend around the barrel and the inside leg and indirect rein keep the bend and allow the horse to sit deep around the barrel and follow their nose out. If you do in straight without the leg and have no bend, you will not get a smooth motion turn.
@Weaponsmaster8595 Yes, i know that. but her horse isn't keeping his hind end under him. he is swinging it out, and therefore has no power coming out of the barrel. That's all I was saying.
ALL TRAINERS RIDE WITH SPLIT REINS!!!! ITS SO IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AND THE HORSE FREAKS, HE DOESNT STEP IN THE CLOSED REINS AND BREAKS HIS JAW!!!! WHICH I HAVE SEEN HAPPEN... AND IM MORE THAN SURE SHE DOESNT RUN WITH SPLIT REINS AT BARREL RACES.
@westernhorsegirl96 i do belive 95 feet between one and two...and 105 feet between one and three....and two and three...i think tht is regulation size tho
i barrel race and this is a good teacher... i already knew all this tho... i took 1st in jr barrels last nite and my horse buck around the 1st barrel.. she didnt like the spurs
People.. Split reins are completely fine for slow work and training it althoughs you to have just enough contact in a young horse you dont want to teach them bad habits or be hard on there mouths and with shorter reins its harder.. and please shes troting
I know, its not hard at all xD lol besides its good to learn to ride in all ways all styles and all tack. :o) Just make sure that your horse doesnt get caught up on the excess reins (Basically for short horses using longer reins)
To settle the rein thing, all riders are different and all horses are different. I personally always use barrel reins unless I am riding a young horse and teaching it to work off of its front or back end. Yes, I use them trail riding. Barrel reins/ roping reins/ bullet reins are all one thing. they do come in different lengths, and fabrics that will fit your hands and uses. This woman obviously knows what she is doing if she is hired by expert villag. =)
riding in split reins isnt bad when training and going slow i use to ride in split reins alot not anymore cuz i got a new headstall and reins but calm down she knows what shes doing
ok ppl she is using split reins in her slow work and training! she is not running in them. you are supposed to use spit reins when you train. if you cant train your horse in split reins they you probly shouldnt be barrel racing yet. they teach you and your horse not to depend on the reins so much and more on your legs and seat, they also give the horse more freedom in its head movement unlike roper reins. i myself train in split reins and it HELPS alot!
i totally agree with horsebackrider420 and welovebecca!!!! its not that difficult if you really cant ride in split reins without dropping it in barrels??? wooww plus this lady is just at a trot gezz ppl calm down!
I'm with betsug1. I ride with split reins all the time other than when doing speed events. I think that anyone who is calling her stupid really has no idea what they are talking about. I have never dropped my reins when training or riding my horses and again I agree with betsug1 to each there own. This is the only video I have seen of this lady and have no idea who she is but while I doubt she uses split reins when actually racing it is up to her what type of reins she uses. So theres my cent.
You people going on about the split reins make me laugh. I run with them all the time at home. Yes at shows I use different reins because I have a different headstall and set for the shows. If you acutally know how to ride, its safe. But to each his own.
@betsugs1 im so with you i don't ever use loop reins i have no control over my horse i swear with them ive got a video with me riding my new horse for the first time and im freaking loving those split reins in it haha!
To MyStupidHappyEnding this is corny but really know your horse. Get to know them with their faults and their successes. Your bond with your horse is the best thing for starting to compete!
I personally ride with split reins only in western competitions like pro western pleasure, or things like that. Always(my advice) ride with attatched reins when racing like pole bending or barrel racing since they tend to be safer incase you lose your grip. With split reins they could fall and make you horse tumble, dangerous things after that happen.Riding with attatched reins ensures safety
I was just told by Jackie Dube that you never pull to your pocket, and as soon as you hit your pocket, rotate your hand. I have tried it and it works.
GREAT IDEA! It may seem like some of this is basic - but my youth riders have gotten alot out of these sets of videos and we've learned a few new exercises to keep them fresh! THANKS!
So for barrel racing, is it primarily Neck reigning?

yea its 90 beetween the first to 105 from the two front ones to the back one and 60 feet from the timer line to the first barrel
ilovemyhorsepepsi 1 year ago
I was wondering the same thing. I mean, everytime i put out the barrels, i don't want to waste my time measuring the distance of the barrels.
horselover00100 1 year ago
can you barrel on grass?
jessisorensen 2 years ago
@jessisorensen
it isn't the best ground to run in but if you aren't going to run there isn't a problem with riding on grass slowly
angelchick6103 2 years ago
@jessisorensen yeah just make sure it isn't tall so you don't hit snags. make sure its okay that your probably gonna wear it down.
wildafricansafari 2 years ago
how far apart should the barrels be?
westernhorsegirl96 2 years ago
It doesnt really matter as long as their some distance, their doesnt have to be any exact distance oon the barrels when your practicing.

ok thanks!
westernhorsegirl96 2 years ago
for regulation they need to be atleast 15 feet away from the fence

i ride splits too but i cross em over.i had a bad experience runnin poles with closed reins.they wrapped around my saddle horn and i couldnt turn
SaddleBroncRider15 2 years ago
you may have had them set at too long of a lenght. When running poles your reins should barrely reach your saddle horn

yeah she is gonna get whats comin to her runnin pro rodeo barrel racing with split reins how stupid can you get she is omg i dont like her lol
RedneckBuckHunter08 3 years ago
If you had watched any of her other videos she says that she trains with split reigns and when she competes she uses barrel reigns.
Dustytucker 2 years ago 13
in her defense doing slow work with split reins is OK. however to do an actual competitive run you dont use them.
cowboi1981 3 years ago 2
I think that riding with split reins during SLOW WORK is fine. During a run, umm no way!
