To drive 1 mile it cost less than .20 cents... The typical police officer makes far above $16 per hour. So you fire one police officer and for that hour the WHOLE police force gets to drive over 80 miles for that hour from the saving. It is all just hyperbole.

@tkcarr I see the point you're making, but I still think there's a case here, Warren still finds that the individual isn't entitled to personal protection by the police, or damages if the police service isn't sufficient. This issue is a little different, the cities or states in these cases are denying people police and fire protection en masse. You'd have to file the suit as a group but the state does have a constitutional duty to provide for the safety off all its citizens.

The FFs believed that thru the militia each able bodied person armed would be the best for a common defense. We opted to out source that to the govt and so we can't complain when it doesn't work. Jefferson believed EVERYONE was responsible for the common defense (and that includes crime). It was the republican ideal. I choose to protect myself.
Why not just walk around and patrol the streets by foot some of the time... you'll have a public presence, easier to maneuver when you're chasing people, and it addresses that physical fitness problem~

@rjbonacolta I'm not sure there would be a case. They haven't denied ALL police protection just some. The level of support isn't a constitutional issue but one of policy and government. Those folk elected those officials and they can unelect or recall them. We get the government we deserve.

@tkcarr Even if a court wouldn't hear it or agree with my reasoning, I'm sure we can agree that this kind of things goes against the spirit in which the constitution was written, the founders intent was clearly to provide a country with sufficient police protection for everyone, regardless of the financial situation. @rjbonacolta Not sure about the founding fathers either. I think that personal protection is an individual as well as a corporate responsibility. The FFs believed that thru the militia each able bodied person armed would be the best for a common defense. We opted to out source that to the govt and so we can't complain when it doesn't work. Jefferson believed EVERYONE was responsible for the common defense (and that includes crime). It was the republican ideal. I choose to protect myself.

In my country where your house is being burglarized and you call the cops the cops mostly respond like... "Oh sorry we cannot help you... at the moment we lack the means of transportation".
But when you add in the phone call that drugs like cocaine is being observed in large quantities the cops will arrive at your home in around 5 minutes.
I didn't know cops over in the US reach the same level of pathetic.

What will happen is that the 911 operator will call back the hotel and ask security to check it out, and call back if PD is needed. Happens all the time. Same for public telephons from Malls, Hospitals, public places where there are lots of people. 99% of the time it's kids playing with the telephone.

When essential services can no longer operate effectively due to lack of available funding necessary... then yes you are basically beginning to see the first signs of 3rd world level hardship in America. I don't know where the host lives that cops show up "right away", but I can tell you from a low crime neighborhood in a major metropolitan city, calling to report a noise outside or your car being broken into (with windows breaking) yields a response in about 45 minutes. But if you are protesting, or behind on student loans, I'm sure SWAT will be there in <= 5min

The reason private individuals/companies(small or large) do a better job is because their earnings are PERFORMANCE BASED, State employees have a Fixed, Guaranteed Wage, No matter how good or bad they perform... they still get paid.
