As a bass player, I always use the scales and finger exercises for warmup and to work out smoothness on the higher registers. The key, though, is to take these scales and do something with them. Technical expertise and theory is the foundation upon which the artist creates. It's the pallette an artist uses to paint a picture. Pros like this can say more with 5-10 notes than many who feel it necessary to be all over the place with no groove. Just speed. These cats live in the pocket.
It's true that Eric hasn't gone too far beyond the pentatonic scale-wise,but it is what it is,y'know? It's just a jam with a head.Like you wouldn't wanna be up there cuz they all so limited-an'-all????Bedroom wankers AWAKE!
@Fl3tch3rb0y - I happen to agree with you... I don't think Clapton is particularly brilliant either... Farting around a minor pentatonic scale does not make you a genius...
Yes he play just on a pentatonic minor, but his sound and style are great...you can study music for all your live but if you don't know how create a solo and a style and if you don't feel the music in you blood you can't play...you can just do exercise like John Petrucci e co.
Obviovsly if you study and fell the music in you r blood you are better, like John scofield,Mike Stern and Steve Vai(When he begin)But a musician is an artist and artist have to create something, not just do exercis
Its definitely not my kind of music but playin jazz, blues and funk is much more fun and innovative than any other music. So even if u like punkrock/metal/house or whatever, sooner or later ull play some jazz to improve ur skills as a musician!
Poor slaptomania, for some unknown reason he thinks by putting down a guitarist whose career has spanned over four decades and who has publicly stated his admiration for the blues legends that came before him, it somehow makes him sound relevant, NOT. When you have contributed as much as Clapton and when you are instantly recognized by your unique tone and your unabashed simplicity in constructing solos that are a melody on their own, then maybe, just maybe, you can open your untalented mouth.
fuck damnit he makes me want to scream at 01:04 he makes a tone which is not very loud at the beginning and then fades to get louder, and then it's just in the damn pocket :D wow!!
@AndrewMercedes69 Yeah... I know that for a for a FACT that Steve Gadd drummed on Barbara Streisand's album Guilty! Barbara Steisand! Look, these guys play everything (including pop) and they like ALL music (including pop). It's that perspective that makes them great! If you can't accept today's music then it's your loss.
