@terrorzilla How do we "resent parental involvement"?? I would LOVE for parents to be more involved and show they care. It does not bother me to be held to standards, I already go through prof. dev. and renew my license. I'd like to see you teach in Indy and we'll see how much "merit pay" you get. Why give $ to private/charter schools? About 20 out of the BOTTOM 25 schools as far as rankings (IN) are charter schools. They are not working.

@bbender16 You're a joke. He's looking at hard facts from professionals who study what really goes on in classrooms in the U.S. and abroad. He is not just listening to the word of corrupt union bosses or whatever fairytale emotional appeal you enjoy. "Smaller class size" was all a big lie. It only exploded the numbers of teachers and thus their union dues all to be funneled into political coffers. 30-35 students in private schools schools isn't unusual & even more students in college classes.

Once you get into college (and even AP Classes in high school) where maturity isn't an issue from the students, thats when class size doesn't matter. What he's saying is that I have cancer and you have cancer, and we both have to have it treated the same way, and if we don't get it cured in 180 days, then we get kicked out of the hospital.

I agree he should really rethink education.....even more so if he runs for president.... where i go to school teachers do all they can to get students to pay attention but they sit there and do nothing anyway and thats not the teachers fault its the students...he really needs to rethink education

"Rethink education?" Do you expect school to entertain? The real world is harsh and it's time schools return to remembering it. Students have the choice to interest themselves in learning or not. After all, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink. Either parents are involved or they are not. Gov't schools cannot & should not substitute for parents. Thinking they should is why schools fail miserably while budgets soar. The unionized, corrupt education establishment has failed.

It is clear from this speech that he has no idea what goes on in schools. What can teachers do when kids are absent at least 1 day/week? What do they do when a kid never brings hw back? How will children succeed at a public, charter, or private school when they don't have anyone helping them at home? It cannot be left for just the school or teacher to solve the communities problems. IN will never have quality teachers with such low pay and the threat of being fired every single year

Since you dismiss Daniels, but acknowledge fixing the problem of uninvolved parents can't be left to teachers/schools, just what *is* your solution? Here in CA, my nieces & nephews are in public schools. I supplemented their early education. Public school teachers resent parental involvement, whine about being held to standards, rebuke merit-based pay & block vouchers programs to force public schools into competing with private ones for any students, not just those of gov't officials & the rich.

So with a cap on property taxes how do you expect to pay for local schools, police,and fire departments? Also, what about those people that have had a tragety and have to live with government assistance? Cut welfare and leave those people to fend for their own, thats the Republican answer.
