I genuinely did not know that BB could play like that! Pity me I guess. I thought his playing was a lot more minimal for want of a better word. There are some speedy twiddly little flurries in there. Beautiful playing and tone, I never used to really get the adulation but I think I should revise that!
B.B. fooled the heck out of me up until i seen this video from 2:14-2:28,. wow! those were some nice chops comin from him that ive never seen or thought he would attemp. go head B.B.!
He is the lord and master of that instrument. The beauty, the authority, the inevitability, the nuance, the feeling, the depth. There has never been anyone who comes near him and I would be very surprised if there ever is. He is one of a kind. Louis Armstrong has no competitors on pre-bop cornet and trumpet. B. B. king has no competitors on modern blues guitar.
When B.B. hits a note and starts playing I can always see myself as a youngster back in Memphis as my parents are entertaining family/friends while playing B.B. Those notes carry powerful memories, histories, and ideas young people. That's what the blues can do.
BB's tone is his signature, especially back in the 1970s.
He puts every ounce of feeling into every vibrato note...like his life depends on it. Many shredders find his technique boring, but they'll never get the point i.e it's FEELING and NOT speed. This man,as well as all the original Bluesmen like T Bone Walker, has influenced more people than any shredder ever will.
@taildragger53 I wonder when music fell off a cliff. Guitar players have always wanted to have chops, but when did speed and the ability to sound like a robot become the end all be all of guitar technique? It's like spacing, timing, and phrasing don't mean anything. Rhythmic variation, melody creation and exploration are becoming a lost art in modern guitar playing and I still don't really know why? BB King's playing is a thing of real beauty, a true art.
We are a long way from the one string diddly bow, which is the device most Blues legends like BB King learnt on. The innovators had patience and discretion.
But speed is used now to impress. The neo-classical technique is ,IMHO, boring.
Any teen student noodling in a music shop can play fast.
One around my area plays with oven gloves on!
Will they be still known in 50 yrs time? BB & Albert King,JL Hooker, Lightnin Hopkins will.
@taildragger53 BB King was always a big fan of jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell..and Kenny is the epitome of grace, elegance and discretion. Burrell can play at lightning speed but chooses his notes carefully instead. In this ' commodity disposable' era we have most shredders would've have the patience to understand the phrasing. But the idea should be to play ideas from the heart rather than show off how many modes one knows.
all you fags who subscribe to internet lessons like "expert village" and so on, stop watching that crap and do what you can to learn from this guys playing, just look and listen at what he does.
What's so remarkable about B.B. King is his ability to voice his guitar exactly like a singer. I think he cared more about that than the scales, the technicals or any "shredding" ... he wanted to give his instrument a voice. Some of the best blues players of today go back to B.B. for that very reason. He brought to blues guitar what ever real blues guitarist wants to bring in their own way. Some do it better than others.
several of my bodily fluids just left the building....if this music doesn't make your spine shiver and your heart pound, then I'm afraid you're already dead.. sorry. ..
Haha! If they like music a whole lot there then they have the same dispositions as folks in Belgium... One of the only redeeming qualities of this place! lol Wondrous post; love the interview too! Baddog's right: he's a King. Rou're right by my book: this IS feeling!
This is actually BB's best band - Bobby Forts, Sonny Freeman, and Ron levy. This is just one of his many instrumentals that he used to throw in - same changes as the great "My Mood" except in a lower key. In the early younger days BB always changed his set.. The Band just followed.
I genuinely did not know that BB could play like that! Pity me I guess. I thought his playing was a lot more minimal for want of a better word. There are some speedy twiddly little flurries in there. B.B. King at the height of his power...the mid-1970's!!!
For any guitar player who wonders, THAT'S how to make love to a guitar !

Props to the trumpet and sax players, also...
