  • its as big as a freakin bird

  • you know those things make freaking awesome bass bait?

  • That wasn't pee... It was Dobsonfly anal spray...

  • Ugh I just found one of those outside and off to google I went. Was gonna catch it to feed to my oscar fish but I'm too scared lol. It's HUGE! The one outside is a female too (this one in the vid is male) and I read they hurt when they pinch so I'm not touching it lol.

  • If that thing come by my house I kill it!

    damn nature, you scary!

  • @thefaketahare youl be so scared you wont go near it

  • I saw one on the Wolf River yesterday

  • I saw those out in the PA countryside...being a city boy i bought into the story that they crawl into your and bite you....lol

  • If i saw that, I would kill it

  • I say stab a hook through it and fish with it. Then radioactive the fish to make a bugfish. Then teach the fish to love. then teach it to kill - then feed the fish to a radioactive bear and re teach it love and killing - then Re - take the earth in the name of inglip the almighty.

    Problem?

  • Hellgrammite adult of the male gender - they no bite but they pee!

  • Saw one of these in Arkansas once. Pretty cool and freaky.

  • The presence of dobsonfly is an environmental indicator that you live in an area that is highly irradiated ...

Wait, just kidding. Correction: the dobsonfly is an environmental indicator that your home is situated in an area free of manmade pollution. The larvae of dobsonfly cannot develop in sick rivers and streams.

    Your family is truly blessed!

  • MEGALOPTERA MAGNIFICA!!

  • i saw one of these out here in the midwestern area of illinois. freakiest and most intimidating bug i have EVER seen. turns out the males cant even pinch tho. i'm just glad i finally know what the heck it is

  • jesus, those things are huge!

  • I'm sitting here with my son and we are both freaked out... its hard not to sit here and say oh shit this guy is crazy...instead i say wow um look at that...but in the inside im saying fuck this guy thats nuts

  • i found one out here in cali once very rare only seen it once snake fly is the most common with antlions coming in at a close second, it was beautiful.

  • Ah some of that "foul smelling anal spray" I read about on wikipedia...

  • these things are found in armies in Connecticut. Especially towns surrounding and including the pachaug state forest. I once counted 8 of these things resting on the concrete walls of a mcdonalds in lisbon, CT

  • one of those entered my house one day... i was terrified by it ....their jaws are BIG and very intimidating... but the worst part is they fly very fast & they make alot of noise... almost like a little helicopter around your house!

  • Yeah I rather die

  • i just caught a female, it bites tho lol

  • Hey I use that for bait when I go fishing.

  • @snyderryan7 its a male. male dobsonflies's jaws are just to scare away predators they do not move.

  • What da fuck da worst thing is it flies!!!!!!!!!!!

    id piss maself!!

  • Bio Major here.. Much creepier than a mantis, dung beetle, or rhino beetle. Prehistoric looking... Found at Lake Lure, NC. Also squirted crap on me.

  • that is so cute

  • awesome insect! wish there were more of these in california.

  • why the EFF are you touching that thing?

  • NASTY! Ok he's so redneck because that isnt pee...if he could smell or look it up on the web its ANAL spray that smells BAD!

  • see em all over southern ontario, pathetic creatures tho :P

  • I would hate to have one of those splat on the windshield as I'm driving! (Or worse, have hundreds of them splatting!)

That bug is cool looking & gross at the same time. Looks like it would make a good pet but I've heard they only live a week.

  • my last name is dobson

  • Rednecks at their best...

i especially love the part where the guy says it peed on him.

IT'S NOT PEE IT'S A DEFENSIVE SPRAY THAT SMELLS LIKE HELL

  • good god. gotta be a troll dont you?

  • I found one this morning at work!!! Scared me half to death!!!

  • it stole my name :)

  • Not bad.

  • Those things have scary looking mandibles. So it squirts more than bites?

  • the males' mandibles don't have enough leverage to break skin, but the females bite hard, and cause a good cut and some bleeding.

  • I live in southern Ohio and helgramites are easy to find. When I was 15 I found a dobson fly that was dead and it is the only one I have ever seen in person. Amazing insect!

  • lol theres one on my moniter just sitting there all phased out...

  • I live in Hinton WV,on New River rd. The Helgramites just did their annual crawl across the road by the thousands. Usually happens when it rains. In front of my house I can go out right now, turn over one rock on the bank and there will be 3 under it. EVERY bait store sells them here. Helgy central. They are annoying when they grow wings though, flying all around your lanterns while catfishing.

  • i read that the male pincers (long ones) are only for grasping females while mating. the females can bite hard though, either way, i wouldnt let those hideous things crawl on me.

  • those pincers look like they could rip off a nut sack

  • why you'd let one near your nut sack, I don't know!!! LOL

  • I love these insects they are awsome. I was headed into my grams house and it was on the door. I live in SW Pa and no one I knoew had seen one before. They are just lovely

  • If I'm not mistaken that's what the old timers here in NC call a Grampus. I could be thinking of another bug, but I do know they say a grampus is good for bait and has a wicked nasty bight.

  • You're absolutely right, that's what my family in NC called them, and no one else in any other state knew what I was talking about. We used to wake up in the morning and they'd be sticking to the sides of the house. I never saw an adult one (like the one in the video) bite, but their larva (Hellgramites) can bite the hell out of you. Hellgramites are also great for bait, i don't think the adults are used as bait but i could be wrong.

  • smallies too ;) can't resist them!

  • their larvae, hellgramites, r good bait 4 largemouth

  • my brother found one of those at a 7-11 during the graveyard shift. This 7-11 is in Baltimore, Maryland. Crazy thing, i love bugs though.

  • I saw one of these out in Costa Rica. We don't have them in Europe. The one I saw was a female and after taking pictures I went and poked her pincers with a stick. She did latch on, but only very half-heartedly. Then she flew away a few yards.

  • Don't ever use pesticides - not even when you are scared of an insect! You are poisoning yourself at the same time as the critter.

  • i saw a female before, it was fn scary! it like hissed at me, it was a female

  • The female Dobsonfly, (like most females I know....heh heh), is EXTREMELY ill-tempered and will chew a hole in your hand before you can bat an eyelash at it. Trust me on this one...

  • i seen a dobson larva underneath rocks while swiming

  • That's really common though. The larvae are called Hellgramites and are extremely popular for being used as fishing bait. They are excellent for catching catfish and bass. I live in WV and you can find them under any rocks near riverbanks, burrowed under. The easiest way to find them is to go to any live-bait shop lol. One thing though, the larvae DO bite and they do it very hard. The full grown Dobson fly isn't as apt to biting unless provoked.

  • i can nv find them in bait shops :( i hav to look 4 them in creeks

  • Really? Here in WV, just about any bait shop will keep a large stock of them. Mostly people just go near riverbeds and creeks, flip rocks and catch them. A lot will sell them to the bait shops.

  • well i live in northern virginia and not too many people fish up here

  • oh man i finally found out what this is i was in maine at a movie theater called chunkies i was eating skittles and got in the car and the thing crawled in my mouth going after the skittles i flipped out and was like having a heart atack and my dad was making fun of me about being scared of a little moth we were driving and he turned the interior lights on he shat himself my mom jumped out of the car and ran away somewhere and my bro just found 1 in ny at my aunts house mine was a female too

  • One of those things attacked my cat. I emptied an entire can of raid on it before it finally died. They are nastay creatures. haha like that person said below... i dare you to do that with a female.

  • my uncle caught a female dobsonfly and a scarab beetle and put it in a mesh cage thinking that they would get along. in the morning the female dobson fly was dead with all its legs cut off and there was a hole in the mesh cage and the scarab beetle escaped.

  • I saw one of those a few years ago. My sister and I had never seen anything like it in NC. Thought it was a freakin mutant. Glad to finally know what it really is, lol...

    They are soo cool.

  • i dare you to hold a female Dobson fly

  • that one is male the females bite like hell not those and i think ur thionking of snakeflys they chase me around out side

  • Fucking gross...

    UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Undoubtedly the biggest, ugliest insect you can find in the Northeast. I saw mine while taking a smoking break outside our office building one night in Roslyn, VA. Almost shocking how big and repulsive it was. Yuk.

  • Had one land on my face while I was catfishing at night on the Deleware river. BUUUUUZZZZZZzzzzz thwack, Kak what the shit ugh!

  • Ha ha yeah they are in the midwest too, saw one in my garage in KC.

  • What the hell is that thing? I'v never seen one of those. I'm in BC Canada. Where are you?

Do those things bite? What do you mean you got squirted? what does it squirt?

I'm glad those things arent around here. gross!!

  • Aren't those things supposed to be mindless biting machines that can pwn with a single bite?

  • no no no no no no D:

    why did i watch this?

  • I saw one of those things in the Adirondacks back in the 70s. They are huge!!
