I just wish I understood better how it's all laid out inside and the purpose of the different structures. Sadly, I don't think I'll ever get there with my health being what it is.
The gopuras are more ornamental and beautiful than the inner shrine(in most temples).
This is because, as a sign of respect to the Gods, the roof over the Inner shrine which houses the Idol is kept simple and formal. But the temple itself had to be grand, and all the grandeur of the temple is seen on structures other than the inner shrine, mainly the Gopuras. They have sculptures of mythological characters and scenes from the Vedas.
There are balconies in the temple gopuras, which are open occasionally for tourists. They are used by the maintenance guys at the temple for painting/patch work/preservation of the nearly 2000 year-old rocks used in its construction.
I love hindu temple in India. Only visited Sabarimala temple and Lord Murugan's Palani temple and some others but don't know the name of the temple.

This is more beautiful than the cathedrals of Europe. Are there balconies and vantage points high up in the gate towers where tourists can go?
