I still have the gas mask my dad was issued when he was a kid.. It's still in the box it came in.. He said they made him try it on but it was never used for its designed purpose.
There's no doubt in my mind that if Britain had succumbed in 1940 then surely America would have declared war on Germany instantly and defended freedom. Hitlers big mistake was to invade the Soviet Union (like Napoleon did). The war could not have been won without the support of Soviet Union. It was only because Germany was stuck between two front in the east and west (and south) that they lost the war.
Regardless of who feels slighted about what credit may have been given where in films, I think we can all agree it was a damn good job that the Allied countries worked in unison to defeat the Axis. I'm as English as English can be, and I don't particularly feel that we (the British people) were ignored or neglected in so far as our part in WW II is concerned. Hollywood has made some wonderful films, but they have often sacrificed accuracy for the sake of entertainment value. Just my opinion.
stop speaking out of your arse man, my Grandad gave six years of his life to preserve our freedom. IT is because of the English who stood up to a bully that we are free
Your perspective? If WWII was filmed from an American perspective, fuck all would happen for the first hour, then in the last thirty minutes we'd see lots of Yanks, and then for about forty years after the film ended we'd have to endure Yanks saying how great they were in it.
this is so true, im aussie, and i don't mind the fact that people often forget we were there from the beginning or our feats are often overlooked, because we simply don't care what the rest of the world thinks of us... but if i hear one more ignorant american telling me that they saved us in ww2 when they joined LATE, and beat a war weary beleaguered enemy, i swear to god i will rip that pricks head off
The americans only fight shopkeepers. Vietnamese, Koreans, so long as they are convinced they'll win, they'll take them on. The world stood up to one of the most feared armies of the 20th century. America watched from the sidelines, waited till everyone was knackered, then stepped in to claim the glory. Having seen the hysteria when their towers got bombed, I can't imagine how they would have coped with the Blitz.
@TheXXXXBitter You must realize most Americans on You Tube are under the age of 15, in the US most adults over 35 do not use you tube nearly as much as minors do. But it comes as a shock to me that someone of such class would make such and ignorant and hateful generalization. You speak as if America deserves minor credit, but what really shocks me is how someone who wasn't there could feel so entitled. I was born and raised in Germany and without US support, Germany today would be nothing.
@naltrexone23X i didnt see the comment to who this was a responce. was it a brit? i swear i'm ashamed of british people today. i'm English myself. some of the comments on youtube are utterly stupid, especially reguarding the britain / america situation.
@naltrexone23X my grandparents are Deutsch and were imprisoned in sydney having fled germany in 1939 until the end of world war 2. My mother still speaks Deutsch fluently, i have lived in München... were you there during world war 2 are your parents American?
well the bombing of residential suburbs was approved later in the war since it lowered the morale of the communities. Coventry received quite a blitz and its population was a bit traumatized but soon afterwards the managed to stay mentally firm and free spirited.
are you blind and stupid germany wanted to flatten london as a prelude to invasion my god whey do people think that the germans were a good lot. they started both wars look at the real history. not some german history re write
Don't be ridiculous. A regime which authorised death camps, gas chambeers, torture, human experimentation and the anihilation of entire towns of civilians OF COURSE wanted civilian deaths. This was a nightmare regime, run by the mad and the evil, supported by the stupid and docile who, like you, preferred to shut their eyes to the horror.
The repeat was a rewrite. Is a pacifist supposed to be walked all over by someone with an axe to grind? Answer is no. That's clear. I think I have made straight statements. Your's are "rhetorical" in the sense that your questions are typically deviators. Given some clarification and more space, the answer is no on all three counts. The last statement is patently absurd and you know it.
No one is saying the Brits were angels, but you know, if AH had been less of a maniac, everything would have been avoided. Don't forget, he wanted the war badly. I will not get involved in your transparent rhetorical devices, go try them on someone else. AYou have proven one thing in the last post: you use all the revisionist buzzwords and the standard questions. Go back to your David Irving and consider this discussion closed.
... more by accident than design. Retaliation on Berlin... Then on Sept 7, the Nazis "do" London with over 300 planes. That was the first real terror bombing.
You cannot just isolate D and GB. But Hitler definitely got the ball rolling. That is why you are getting heat.
and BTW: I lost relatives on and to both sides, some in Munich, some in the camps.
PS: Hitler got Holland to submit by threatening to bomb the Hague and (I think) Amsterdam. This was in May 1940.
Because you don't sound like one, but you are frightfully unclear. and what is "one-sided"? Your data is vague at best and fails entirely to take the complexities of the time into account. There was a moratorium on bombing civilians at the onset of the hot war. But there was fighting near towns For GB, Hitler broke that agreement with Rotterdam. GB attacks industrial targets in the Ruhr... Then came the Battle of Britain. Liverpool bombed in August. Some bombing of London...
Because until now you have only vented without clarifying anything you have written. Your own words... you also say typical BBC, well the program is about Britain in the war. When did Britain begin terror-bombing Germany (i.e. just whacking civilians)? There was an agreement not to bomb civilians (apparently the Poles were not considered civilians by anyone), even Roosevelt got involved there. There was the Mönchengladbach incident, which was definitely military. And after the LW did
You probably mean Mönchengladbach, May 10, 1940, which intended to bomb bridges to slow down the Wehrmacht, which was in the process of raping Belgium. You have been reading too much Junge Freiheit and other such crypto-nazi pulications. They like to revise, relativise and obfuscate. And they love to compare the bombings with the Holocaust.
What you don't understand is that as a pacifist, i am repulsed at the military period, my heroes are Bertrand Russell, Wallenberg and the deserters.
No, your memory is selective as all those incapable of taking at least historical responsibility for the horrors Germany wrought upon the planet. Let me remind you, silly revisionist, that Guernica happened well before anyone even touched a German city. And by the way: The title of the clip is "Britain at War in Colour" not "poor victmised Germany in colour.
"German cities were being bombed 3 months before Hitler retaliated in kind...
This documentery is very flawed and selective.

Yea, lets not forget that you were executing all "Non german" in Poland, basically everyone. We bomed German to show the people of German that we meant bussines.
Jagerfuast. We gave the ultimatum stating that if Germany attacked Poland, Britian and France would protect Poland and would go to war with anyone who attacked that Country. So Germany infact started the conflict by ignoring what our Government had said back then. (I'm not sure why I have to repeat 'TheDude', but I have)
not 100% true that we declared war first. germany was given an ultimatum not to invade poland and offered a compromise but it didnt comply. seems a pretty good indicator that germany was prepared to war with britain!

It's sad the way this war brings out the tribalist in everyone; a pathetic 'us' vs 'them' mentality that proves that almost nothing has been learnt.
