This is a very simple trick to explain. The number you choose can only have either three letters (one, two, six, ten), or four letters (four, five, nine), or five letters (three, seven, eight) or six letters (eleven, twelve).

If the number has 3 letters, then you land on the 3, then on the 8, then on the 1. If it has 4, then you land on the 4, then 8, then 1. If it has 5 letters, then you land on the 5, then 9, then 1. If it has 6 letters, then you land on the 6, then 9, then 1.
