I agree with congruous... this video is a nice thought, but it doesn't focus on the resolutions that the majority of people who watch youtube videos can actually do. The solutions lie in consumer behavior. Those who know where their food comes from, how it is grown and support and does not support industrialized crop cultivation (ie excessive use of fertilizers). High N levels are the primary cause of Algae blooms resulting in the hypoxia.

What a dumb video. All the suggestions at the end are mitigation measures that can only be put in place by farmers. Farmers are not concerned about the environment. They are concerned about the profit they make from feeding the billions of people who consume meat and dairy products each day. Positive change lies within drastic changes in consumer behavior.

@congruous MAny farmers make a large effort to control their out put of fertilizer. Much of the run off is just that RUN OFF it is fertilizer that gets washed into the rivers through rainfall. This run off is extra economic burden for the farmers so if anything they would be the people in this cycle to receive benefit right away if the run off issue was addressed.
