In this cynical and angry time, Daniels is a calm voice of reason and compassion. Reagan and FDR brought new ideas to government to meet the needs of their times. Old time liberalism and even more laissez faire are not what we need now. Daniels is bringing a third way with the vision and leadership that can shake things up and retrieve America from the irrational bitterness seen in these comments. It is a big job. I think he is the man to do it and the time to do it is now.
On September 15, 2002, Lawrence B. Lindsey estimated the high limit on the cost of the Bush administration's plan in 2002 of invasion and regime change to be about $100–$200 billion. Mitch Daniels, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, subsequently said this estimate was "very, very high" and stated that the costs would be between $50–$60 billion. This lower figure was endorsed by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who called Lindsey's estimate "baloney".
HERMAN CAIN for president---He has business success, mad leadership skills, and personality to spare---he can speak without a teleprompter as can anyone who truly believes in what he's speaking about. But most of all he is committed to getting America back on the path to excellence. and...he can defeat the Anointed One!
So very sad, to have to believe the people who largely got us into this mess are the ones to get us out. And to say because he was the Budget director he gets a pass. By that logic only the President is responsible. Nevertheless, in this rats nest of true believers let's hope a pragmatist like Mitch Daniels emerges.
Do people forget that this guy helped accumulate debt when he was Bush's budget director? I mean these guys came in with a huge surplus and quickly turned it into a deficit. And you trust this guy to solve our debt problems
@hitmanhart670 meh... for one, budget directors don't really have that much control over decisions. also, he was in the unfortunate position of being in that spot immediately after 9/11 which guaranteed it hardly mattered what he thought in that environment. Then there is one important question: who's stopping romney? I know it's not perfect but i'll live with it
@ThePythagoran I was being a little too gung ho there. Honestly out of everyone that has been mentioned as a GOP candidate, I like him the most and feel he's the most sincere about debt reduction policy
@vegaswolf: The minute someone starts citing the Pew Center for their statistics my attention has been lost. They're not quite MoveOn.org, but they are in the ballpark. They are a lefty organization with an ax to grind against every conservative they see, and they'll crunch and recrunch numbers until they find a way to portray a conservative in a negative light. At the end of the day when they rank conservative states poorly, it's because the question amounted to, "How liberal are they?"
Ah, finally... here's your next great President, America. He's on this stage for a reason, and he knows how to do exactly what we need to have done. He's been doing it in Indiana for years -- he runs a state government which operates in the black, even in a recession -- he simply won't have it any other way. Listen to him. Believe him. Support him. Elect him. He's the real deal. Believe me, I know -- he's my governor. I'm not wild about losing him to Washington, but 49 other states need him.
@housevestors MAYBE true but Ron Paul is UNELECTABLE. As Mitch Daniels pointed out "Purity in martyrdom is for suicide bombers ... I for one have no interest in standing in the wreckage of our Republic saying “I told you so” or “You should’ve done it my way." RON PAUL IS UNELECTABLE!
@housevestors While Ron Paul is a great rhetorician and has very good ideas and views which I share, Mitch Daniels has a bullet-proof record of actually doing what he talks about, and successfully I might add, as a chief executive. He is also quite familiar with Washington and its disease. Paul is a legislator with no executive branch record. This is about having the right people in the right places, and Congressman Paul will be a great warrior for the policies of President Daniels.
@TheApostleP That's a very reasonable opinion; I agree. Ron Paul wouldn't be practical and effective as a President in any case, as he's never made a compromise in his life, and likely never will. Idealists are great for inspiring the base, but the President should be a realist.
I would just like to say that I am of the sentiments that most have so far expressed regarding Mitch Daniels. I believe he is a man worthy of our support.
@Kempite still? with him not supporting the only real bill that had came through whereby newly available jobs would have been created? uncompensated medical care to illegals lowered, and thereby your cost for medical here in Indiana? Have you seen the most wanted list in EVERY STATE IN THE UNION?? Illegal Alien, after Illegal Alien. Mitch is for his big industry buddies only, he cares nothing for Working Indiana, he is certainly not worthy of any vote now.
Today's ppl are setup to only pay attention for a few minutes. I'll bet that not many will listen to the complete 32 min speech.
This is one reason Obama was elected, it only takes a few seconds to say "HOPE and Change" WTF does that mean. Mitch is giving specific ideas. Try listening to it all.
If you do that and still wouldn't vote for him you probably shouldn't be voting at all.
@omni1595 Yes, you are completely correct. Daniels is an excellent man and would make a fine candidate for president. Is America mature enough to vote for a man who is follically challenged? I doubt it but I hope I'm wrong. Dwight Esinhower could not get elected today. America is too childish to elect a man like Daniels. You are completely correct about Obama and I was horrified that we voted for such a buffoon. That's what scares me most that we could elect Obama.
We live in Indiana and have had him as a GOV for 6+ yrs. When he took office Ind. was going broke. He took control of spending and even in these bad times has the state budget balanced.
Say what you want but he has done it. Even against the dems who tried to stop him. So if we don't vote a guy like him in office who will we vote for. A democrat who thinks we should all be taken care of cradle to grave?
Listen to GW's speeches before he became President, the exact same crap. Just words. Another politician pure and simple. He will side for the Gov't over the people every time. Guaranteed.
@vegaswolf He walked the walk in Indiana. So how can you make your statement? BTW, George W. Bush was never as articulate as this man. And how can you guarantee such a thing. Your mind has probably been diminished in a city like Las Vegas.
@TheApostleP Perhaps you're right but from what I've read Indiana was one of 19 states that a report "The Trillion Dollar Gap" said has “Serious Concerns” regarding their future pension obligations. Indiana has only 72% of the their future obligations funded and their unfunded pension liability is $9.8 BILLION - that’s more than the entire payroll of every employee covered by a state pension plan.I see no difference. Please feel free to personally attack away! LOL
@vegaswolf You're kidding, right? I'm pretty sure that 75% of our vested state employees aren't going to retire tomorrow, all at once. I'm not familiar with the publication you cited, but let's assume that is a correct statistic. If so, our state pension fund is in pretty good shape. As with all similar funds, it is designed to be funded by investment and appreciation, to a level which ensures that all forseeable payout obligations can be met, which it does, amply. If that's all you got...
@TheApostleP Actually no, it's one of the states in the worst trouble. And it's not "all I got" it's based on facts. See the report here if you want if you've got an open mind .[dub dub dub] pewcenteronthestates [dot] org [slash] report_detail [dot] aspx?id=56695
@vegaswolf Hmmm... if you're not kidding, I can only assume you have a political axe to grind that leads you to oppose a candidate like Mr. Daniels. You've chosen one extremely small aspect of the fiscal condition of a very healthy state and characterized it as negative, which is a debatable point in and of itself. I've already read "The Trillion Dollar Gap," btw.
@TheApostleP First and foremost I despise politics.Jefferson said politics was a necessary "evil". I have no party affiliation, so wrong on that count. This guy was GW's budget director (how well did that go?) According to sunshinereview [dot] org "Fiscal Years 2012-13 State Budget, "Indiana faces a $1 billion gap between the state's revenue and expenses in the state's next budget, which includes the need to build up reserves by $500 million" that's for fiscal year." You call that healthy?

@fluff125 I appreciate that, but check his record. He does exactly, I mean exactly, what he says he will do... and it works. He has 5 consecutive balanced budgets in Indiana to prove it, after inheriting a state government swimming in red ink. He's brilliant, extremely hard-working and a true believer in the Great American Experiment. You may trust this man implicitly.
