Taiwan is the Republic of China. If you're are one of those "Taiwanese" go look at your damn passport if you even have one, which you should since they allow dual citizenships. And no Republic of China is not the same as the People's Republic of China, which is the mainland. Before the mainland China was taken over by the communists both Taiwan(the island) and China(mainland) were the Republic of China. Therefore Taiwanese people are Chinese, ESPECIALLY if your family only speaks Mandarin.
My passport has (TAIWAN). ROC was founded in 1912 and it didn't claim Taiwan until 1943(Cairo Declaration).
Taiwan was part of Japan from 1895 until 1945; however, Japan officially gave up Taiwan in 1951(Treaty of San Francisco). ROC started to ruled Taiwan in 1945; however, during the time, there were still Japanese living in Taiwan(until 1947) and KMT did not rule all of China. KMT lost civil war and escaped to TW in 1949 with 2 million ppl, while there were 6 million Taiwanese.
How does your argument even disprove my point? Sure Taiwan was part of Japan for 50 years. What does that prove? Does that justify them as not being originally Chinese? Are people from Hong Kong not Chinese because Britain ruled them for 100 years? Your argument is irrelevant because it does not disprove anything I've said. I do not disagree that there are indigenous people who's family have been there for generations, but they are a minority.
You obviously cannot read properly as you are not addressing my point.
I never said any country should take back another country.
I cannot care less about either country, but I will not be silent when people from Taiwan act like they're better than Chinese people when they're essentially Chinese.
Now answer these questions.
Was not KMT the official government of China before they were usurped from the mainland?
I do not propagate for either country. You can be both Taiwanese and Chinese, but to deny your Chinese heritage is bullshit. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. I know people who only speak the native language of Taiwan, I do not have any qualms with them and they are definitely a very small minority in Taiwan. Republic of China and Taiwan are interchangeable and if you deny that then you do not know what you are talking about.
Let me put it this way. 98% of people from Taiwan are Han Chinese. If you are Han, no matter what country you are a citizen of or what country you live in you are essentially Chinese.
It's one thing to say you are Taiwanese, it's another for them to say that they are not Chinese. You get me?
There is a study on Taiwan's DNA combination. Most of the 98% population has aboriginal blood. Japan and Korea have kept more Chinese ancient culture than China itself. Within China, there are Uighurs, Tibetans, Mongolia, Russian, and Korean population. They are Chinese citizen, but not Chinese. Chinese=Han(Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese). Also, most American are from other countries, so they can not be called American? Chinese ancestors are from Africa.
Obviously there is no convincing you. The fact that Taiwan is also known as Republic of China is not good enough. The ruling government was once the representative of China is also not good enough. People speak and write in the same language is not enough. Both sharing the same heritage and bloodline is also not enough. You say 98% of the population have aboriginal blood, but that proves nothing. I guarantee you that the DNA of any Taiwanese person is more Han than it is aborigine.
It's not just me ...you take a poll. Most Taiwanese consider themselves as Taiwanese more than Chinese. The easiest way to find the sources is to google/wiki "taiwanese identity". Also, I don't deny Taiwanese have Chinese blood and I love Chinese culture. Most countries in the world was once part of other countries and still use the official languages of their last rulers. It's not strange at all. It's like you are American, but you speak English...and you are ethnic Chinese.
Taiwan has been a Chinese for hundreds of years. It was part of China when the KMT were in control of the government. It was not when they lost the civil war. This is when the Taiwanese identity was developed. My problem is when Taiwanese people get all fussy about being called Chinese when Taiwan was very much a part of China until they annexed themselves. China is part of their heritage. it's the same as how I identify myself as a Chinese person even though I was born in America.
@ whoever is pissed that she isn't being called Taiwanese: I think I can safely say that majority of you are born in the US, therefore, not even Taiwanese but American. Is it really that big a difference?

China has 5,000 year history(claimed by Chinese government)
Taiwan has 400 year history(since Dutch period)
KMT controled Taiwan and part of China from 1945 to 1949=> 4 years.
Taiwan was first ruled by Dutch.
Taiwan was first inhabited by Austronesian people.
Taiwan's first Chinese region was Koxinga(born in Japan and by a Japanese mother)
Taiwan first conquered by China was by Manchus, but not Chinese.
Taiwan's so-called Chinese population are mostly mixed(Jolin is one of the cases).

What is the written language in Taiwan?
For how long did the rest of the world recognize the KMT/RoC as the official government of China even after the civil war?
What about North and South Korea? Are they both not KOREAN even though they speak and use the same language?
If they speak in write in Chinese why should they not be called Chinese?
Does Vietnam use Chinese as an official language? Does Mongolia?

I don't deny that Chinese culture is one of the most important parts of Taiwanese culture.
However, we are not the citizen of China.
You must be English from UK since you write in English.
So you think Tibet should be independent? since they don't speak and write Chinese?

When KMT held Taiwan after WWII, KMT did not control all of China.
Also, China has 4,000 year history. Taiwan has 400 year history.
When Taiwan was part of China, China itself was conquered by Manchus.
Vietnam was part of China in different time. The total years of controlling is more than 1,000 years.
Should China claim Vietnam?
China was once conquered by Mongolia. Should Mongolia take it back? Stop propaganda. Start critical thinking.

Means most people still know Taiwan as TAIWAN
It's just like when Taiwan's official name was first changed from Formosa to Taiwan in around 1960s. It's usually written as Taiwan(Formosa).
