  • At 25 seconds he says, "You play around with the other fingers, like this." Ohhhhh. That's what I've been doing wrong. I thought it was because I'm white and don't have 9 inch fingers.

  • he played so fast.. his bass went back in time

  • His hands are BIG

  • So now humans can move their hands on the speed of light ? o.o

  • he doesnt need drums, he makes his own beats

  • @2xnkote It's not a pointless chord. I use stuff like that quite often.

  • Monstrous hands, both talent and size-wise!

  • Ok, I think got it now. (what the f**!)

  • that thumb is disgustingly long!!!

  • that open but close, always close ya know

  • Lo unico que le envidio es el pulgar que tiene

  • Who the hell that guy thinks that we are?

  • @JinkMcDyler Small handed person maybe

  • Jeeeezuus! Look at that man's hand FLY!! It was a blur!! That's fantastic-ridiculous!!

  • i hate this slap like flea ect.... listen victor wooten !

  • This is crazy! He is awesomely fast and funky! Such skill

  • his hand is like having a seizure of awesomeness

  • 2:09

If you look away and look back really fast he has 40 fingers

  • So yeah it started with Larry graham and then bros johnson comes along and fuck you! It just don't get any better than this. When slap bass and funk is concerned it ended here. No one has improved on this. And how could you?!

  • Johnson: And this is lick number 5! *proceeds to rape the bass and your mind*....

  • It was like "And you play around like the other fingers like this" *PaDAPAMPADamPADamPAPPAMDAPAMDAMPAMPAM* And i was like 'holy shit' O.O

  • It was like "And you play around like the other fingers like this" *PaDAPAMPADamPADamPAPPAMDAPAMDAMPAMPAM* And i was like 'holy shit' O.O

  • i give up

  • The fuck?! Really he is the best. Good luck trying cause it just ain't gonna happen

  • c'moooon too fast !

  • thats slow enough if you really practice the basic slapping.

  • dont be a girly man

  • go play outside

  • Have you SEEN the mans thumb? he can bar the whole neck with the damn thing, im pretty sure he'll be fine, lol.

for most people, that might be a bit of a strain, though.

  • @Nitro487

Pfft, thats why bassists are men not pussy boy carpal tunnel worrying faggot men.

  • go from 2:08 and watch it from there

  • too bad we don't all have 3 foot long hands lol

  • @Silks LOOK PEOPLE IT DOES NOT TAKE PREMIUM LONG FINGERS TO PLAY THE BASS. So many people use that as an excuse for not being good (nothing personal Silks) all it takes is PRACTICE DISCIPLINE AND DEDICATION

  • @NehiMusic1 My comment referred specifically to his technique of using his thumb as a capo on the E string and still being able to fret the other 3 strings with fluidity and speed. My thumb isn't physically long enough to do this without causing serious pain in the joint (especially since I normally play a 5 string). I'm sure many others would have the same problem. All the practice in the world won't change the length of my thumb past the joint. :P

  • @Silks Ok. Point taken.

  • @NehiMusic1 - It takes long fingers to execute the technique that Mr. Johnson employs. Many people just aren't built like that. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of other perfectly effective techniques out there either. Just look at Kai Eckhardt's technique. Different fingers, different geometry, different techniques, equally as skillful. Whatever works is good, whatever doesn't, find a way around it that won't hurt your joints, muscles, or tendons over time.

  • @Silks me too!

  • @Silks Louie and Larry have friggin octopus tentacles for fingers.

  • @Silks Seriously, I can't wrap my hand the way he does. My hands are pretty small.

  • @Apathesis0 You can try Ibanez SR, it has thin neck, but the real problem is that your thumb will hurt if you play too long

  • @Apathesis0 just dont use your thumb, it is pretty bad technique

  • @2xnkote No, it is not. You would not believe some of the possibilities that open up once you use the thumb like Hendrix did while playing guitar. Certain chords are only possibly when the thumb is used.

  • @Apathesis0 on a 4 string bass?

  • @2xnkote Yup. And guitar too.

  • @Apathesis0 nope, you can play every chord with your four fingers, think about it

  • @2xnkote Most chords, yes. But there are plenty I play where I use my thumb because barring the index finger would cause strings to ring that I wouldn't want to because I do a lot of octave pairing.

  • @Apathesis0 if it works for you fine, but it is bad technique, hence you do not seeing top bass-players do such a poor technique. You did just say however that you cannot wrap your hand around so I am confused, regardless this is bad technique, and louis johnson while good at the time, has been far surpassed by the likes of bill dickens, victor wooten, gianni serino to name a few. Check those guys out I think you will enjoy. And octave pairing XD you dont need your thumb for that,

  • @2xnkote You missed what I said. I use octave pairing in chords, therefore it becomes necessary because barring would cause other notes to be unintentionally fretted and sounded. Regular octaves, I of course don't use the thumb. Victor Wooten is nowhere near as funky as Louis. Technically superior, but is missing the greasy funk.

  • @Apathesis0 did you listen to bill dickens, my fave :) , but yes i can see there you would, i play a six string, so much easier for pointless chords like that :)

  • It is ultimately necessary for certain sounds and techniques. Louis certainly uses in cases where he does not.

  • @Apathesis0 can you point me in the direction that it is ultimately necessary please, not trying to be a dick i just simply do not believe it

  • @2xnkote Make an octave with A at the 5th fret on E and 7th fret on D. Then add a third at 5th fret on G. I can guarantee it will feel more comfortable and you will be less likely to play the A string by accident if using a pick.

Wrapping the thumb prevents any residual energy from the strings being slapped being transferred the ones not being touched. It's the only reason I wrap if I am not doing chords like that. It's to prevent any vibration that I do not want to be heard.

  • @Apathesis0 Barring hurts my hand, and can cause notes to be accidentally fretted and ring out. Trust me, some of the most respected and ingenious guitar players wrap that thumb for a reason.

  • Johnson's hands are huge!

    So much funk!

  • Did I just die and go to "Funk heaven"??

  • Simply Beautiful.

  • Long fingers don't hurt when wrapping that thumb around the E string!

  • HES SLAPPIN DA BASE!!!

  • I like how he was like "if you practice you can go faster" and then he raped the shit out of my mind with his lick.

  • @stronger157 yeah i was like with this is not a human lol ......

  • @stronger157 lol. indeed

  • wow savage

  • WOW!

  • Louis (brothers) johnson is my favorite bassplayer

  • tabs anyone

  • you dont need tabs its really easy to just listen to it or even better... look at his fingers, thats why they zoom in on them..

  • lick 5 gave me a boner.

  • lmao nice

  • Louis is out of his funky azz mind...DAYAM!

  • man this is fast :o sweet man
