At 25 seconds he says, "You play around with the other fingers, like this." Ohhhhh. That's what I've been doing wrong. I thought it was because I'm white and don't have 9 inch fingers.
So yeah it started with Larry graham and then bros johnson comes along and fuck you! It just don't get any better than this. When slap bass and funk is concerned it ended here. No one has improved on this. And how could you?!
@Silks LOOK PEOPLE IT DOES NOT TAKE PREMIUM LONG FINGERS TO PLAY THE BASS. So many people use that as an excuse for not being good (nothing personal Silks) all it takes is PRACTICE DISCIPLINE AND DEDICATION
@NehiMusic1 My comment referred specifically to his technique of using his thumb as a capo on the E string and still being able to fret the other 3 strings with fluidity and speed. My thumb isn't physically long enough to do this without causing serious pain in the joint (especially since I normally play a 5 string). I'm sure many others would have the same problem. All the practice in the world won't change the length of my thumb past the joint. :P
@NehiMusic1 - It takes long fingers to execute the technique that Mr. Johnson employs. Many people just aren't built like that. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of other perfectly effective techniques out there either. Just look at Kai Eckhardt's technique. Different fingers, different geometry, different techniques, equally as skillful. Whatever works is good, whatever doesn't, find a way around it that won't hurt your joints, muscles, or tendons over time.
@2xnkote No, it is not. You would not believe some of the possibilities that open up once you use the thumb like Hendrix did while playing guitar. Certain chords are only possibly when the thumb is used.
@2xnkote Most chords, yes. But there are plenty I play where I use my thumb because barring the index finger would cause strings to ring that I wouldn't want to because I do a lot of octave pairing.
@Apathesis0 if it works for you fine, but it is bad technique, hence you do not seeing top bass-players do such a poor technique. You did just say however that you cannot wrap your hand around so I am confused, regardless this is bad technique, and louis johnson while good at the time, has been far surpassed by the likes of bill dickens, victor wooten, gianni serino to name a few. Check those guys out I think you will enjoy. And octave pairing XD you dont need your thumb for that,
@2xnkote You missed what I said. I use octave pairing in chords, therefore it becomes necessary because barring would cause other notes to be unintentionally fretted and sounded. Regular octaves, I of course don't use the thumb. Victor Wooten is nowhere near as funky as Louis. Technically superior, but is missing the greasy funk.
@Apathesis0 did you listen to bill dickens, my fave :) , but yes i can see there you would, i play a six string, so much easier for pointless chords like that :)
@2xnkote Make an octave with A at the 5th fret on E and 7th fret on D. Then add a third at 5th fret on G. I can guarantee it will feel more comfortable and you will be less likely to play the A string by accident if using a pick.
Wrapping the thumb prevents any residual energy from the strings being slapped being transferred the ones not being touched. It's the only reason I wrap if I am not doing chords like that. It's to prevent any vibration that I do not want to be heard.
@Apathesis0 Barring hurts my hand, and can cause notes to be accidentally fretted and ring out. Trust me, some of the most respected and ingenious guitar players wrap that thumb for a reason.
