@anttisairanen It's Harold Bauer - an English concert pianist who studied in Paris with Paderewski at the end of the 19th century and was later on of the the main piano teachers at the Manhattan School of Music in NYC.
he had recorded Brahms' Violin Concerto in D. I believe he won some competition playing that concerto. In all honesty I listened to Alma Gluck, his wife, who was a "great diva" around 1915. Youtube has her and Caruso singing the Traviata brindisi, and his rich voice is followed by what sounds to my ear as a shrill thin voice - Alma's voice.
I loved this video adore the good old fashioned playing of Zimbalist and Bauer who accompanies wonderfully from memory. So natural and graceful at times it seemed almost as if they were just spontaneously improvising the piece! Just out of curiosity what is the quartet that appears for two seconds at the end of the video?
What an enjoyable video. Zimbalist sings with his violin throughout. His playing is without pretense or gimmicks. Is he the violinist who had his violin stolen?
This is a pleasure to watch and listen to. Is there an equal representation of Kreisler, and if not, why not? What about a piece of newsreel film that might have been made of him. E.Zimbalist was indeed a first rate player and a teacher as well at Curtis.
Did Bauer accompany much? He seems to be less of a colleague and more of a showman here. How do any of you know much about Zimbalist? Are there many recordings? He was highly regarded in his day and I think that a career meant very much to him--wealthy or not. Albert Spalding was another "rich" violinist (Spalding sporting goods) that cherished and made quite a career.
Is really hard to find a video about this violinist is quite crappy, but is really interesting to see it, always thought that Auer was a flexible teacher who let his own students develop their own musical violin conception...but this video finally give me some light on it, excellent violin possition, as usual in all Auer students...
His son, Efrem Jr., wrote a violin concerto. I heard part of it once -- I'd like to hear it all. Anyone hear of it, maybe find a copy of it?
One of my treasures is a recording of Efrem Sr and his wife Alma Gluck doing a duet. Sorry I don't remember the name of the piece and can't find it right now (just moved).
Never thought Zimbalist was much of a fiddle player. This video is good, there are so pitchy spots. Unlike and Elman, Heifetz, and some of the other Auer proteges Zimbalist did not grow up in the ghetto, he was from a very wealthy family. I don't think he yearned for a career like those other violinist.
For those who care, the pianist is Harold Bauer, who started out as a violinist and didn't switch to piano until his late teens. Bauer, who was also a conductor, was renowned as a chamber music performer.
How wonderful! Zimbalist was the last teacher Heifetz had. I've always wondered how he sounded when he played, thank you for posting! Are there any more? What a treat! His son is still alive (in his 90's). Retired from acting, though.
What is the daddy of an fbi agent doing fiddling?
ROFL!
But, he is pretty good!

First time I hear this sonata that sounds German. It's because he doesn't do anything special. He just plays it.

I played with a student of Zimbalist who was quite a beautiful artist. It is true that his teaching was superior.

I just adore that old-fashioned style of violin playing - with the quick vibrato and portamenti...

This is a well played Kreutzer Sonata 2nd mvt. Bauer and Zimbalist create some great colors here.

I studied with one of Zimbalist's students. What aristocratic playing! And now I see how she came by it.
Note that he uses the bow more like Francescatti than like Heifetz or Milstein. Testimony right there to Auer's flexibility.

"Zimbalist was the last teacher Heifetz had." this is incorrect. Both were students of Leopold Auer. Zimbalist was just older.
