I'm not sure it "pisses over this with flying colours" because they were tackling another aspect of Dragons Den i.e, the inventions that may have been presented in the Victorian Era, this simply highlights and possibly exaggerates the mannerisms of the potential investors, although the Enfield-Whitehouse sketch is good, it is in a different category to this.

The value of it has nothing to do with it being a scarcity item, it has to do with it being a status symbol. A resource's value can easily be manipulated under capitalism, just look at diamonds. There are billions of diamonds already mined, they are controlled by cartels like any resource (oil or poppies, for example), and the economic system alone distorts their value.

@DGreen999 I am an economics major, and I will tell you without a shadow of a doubt, there is no such wisdom to be had with regard to real world business models and resource economics in any formal college or uni course. As I said, there is no intrinsic scarcity factor with the value of gold, it is merely value fabricated by cultural trends. There are some things which are scarcer and worth nothing, some things more abundant and worth more. Supply & demand is not a scientific law.

The fact of the matter is gold has intrinsic value: its easily made into products, its attractive etc - paper money has no intrinsic value at all - other than to burn in times of hyperinflation to keep your homeless starving body warm.
