@mistersnaredrum: I think there's no need to be christian to love this kinda music - I think that music like this is just the definite proof that music is a divine gift from someone up above given to humans - no matter how you call your god or gods, as long as the message is love, music will be in our hearts.
@metbaer Certainly, you can sing what ever you want to but when you mean what you sing it sounds so much better. Kinda like paint by numbers as opposed to a gallery piece. This music is steeped in Christianity. You may read about this faith and listen to all of the media associated with it and get your money's worth but it pales in comparison to it's Author and Finisher.
@mistersnaredrum: You can sing it even if you're not Christian. We have Buddhists, Jews, atheists... no one asks you about your personal belief. All find some kind of meaning in the songs.
Normally I wouldn't have too much interest in choir-type music but the Sacred Harp Singers' style is so original and haunting that I can't stop listening. You guys are brilliant.
Sacred Harp refers to the voice as the instrument meant to convey this moving and emotional music. It i breaks the rules and is rustic and true Americana.

Can someone tell me right now where the fuck the harp is in this music? The title "Sacred Harp music" was very enticing to Me, assuming a harp was involved.
You haven't been rickrolled, this is how it's meant to be sung, no harps involved. The title of the singing has little to do with what the content is...
Listen to The Lord listening. Where does the Church begin? Where does it end?

Does anyone know the lyrics to the verse before "And am I born to Die" starts?
ThePeachMagnolia 2 years ago
It's shape note singing--before the singing of words begin, the singers sing the verse with "Fa", "Sol", "La" or "Mi" depending on the note.

Overall this is a beautiful rendition, but someone in the group sounds like they are strangling a cat...can't really enjoy it because of that...

@sanjuancb : I share that pain with you!

@ThePeachMagnolia — I understand they sing the names of the notes (fa, sol. la, etc.) for the first verse.

Actually, it refers to a phrase in the Bible I believe, where God refers to the human voice as the harp music presented to Him in worship.
