Well, the sad fact is, black pride does exist, and I, if you'll permit me to say, so whole-heartedly proclaim that I can understand why it exists as a white male. Insofar as feminist pride exists, it's all about being subjugated. Nothing anyone accomplishes is truly on their own -- if you excel in school it's because someone made that knowledge available to you, if you invent something, it's based on knowledge and creations already in existence. I respect your argument, but I disagree slightly. Specifically, the premise that we should only be proud of things we have done, and not of anything we are. When people are shamed for who they are, that makes people defensive about that aspect of themselves. They have been harmed, and they need to heal that wound. People need to accept themselves, and are entitled to some recognition by others, because they are a unique and valuable human beings. That's not a privilege to be earned.
This is a gross misunderstand of 'black pride' and conversely any other type of ethnic pride. Black pride is simply a response to the idea that has been fed to blacks for 400 years in this country, that they are inferior, discriminated and must be subservient. It's a thing odious thing to want to take that away from them based on this fabricated notion that we are all equal even today.

I don't think it matters what you are proud of, "Pride" is a tool to gain standing amoung your fellow humans but I agree with Proteanw's thinking. Being proud of something you have achived is more humble and makes you more free then being proud of something you was born into. What you achive is also connected to what you was born into, if Proteanw. wasn't born with his grandmother he would probably not put as much weight to his conclusions as he do here.
Your parents or genes that shape you, you never had anything to do with. They made you achieve what you achive.., I don't disagree with that it isn't a good mindset but it's also a bit deceiving. I have a thing against pride of being born a certain way. I have no pride in being Thai and black or being born in the US. I could be Greek, Mongolian, or Mayan. I could be throwing up Greek philosophers and inventors, Mongolian conquerors, or Mayan astronomers. The thing is we have no power on where and how we're born, and to take the achievements of others in your group and use them as some justification of self- importance is just...plain wrong.
While I don't support the idea of pride for any ethnicity, I think it's important for people to know that they shouldn't be ashamed of it either, and racial minorities have been taught throughout history that they are lower than the racial majority. I'm not ashamed to be white, and no one one should be ashamed to be black, Asian, Hispanic, etc.

Skin colour has no correlation with anything, unlike say a country where you can point to its values, aims, political system etc so it makes more sense to be proud of ones country than ones skin color.

I respect your argument, but I disagree slightly. Specifically, the premise that we should only be proud of things we have done, and not of anything we are. When people are shamed for who they are, that makes people defensive about that aspect of themselves. They have been harmed, and they need to heal that wound. People need to accept themselves, and are entitled to some recognition by others, because they are a unique and valuable human beings. That's not a privilege to be earned.

So I just want to counter some "points" you made. First your interpretation of pride is NOT the definition of it. Pride is: "A high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, ect". I don't think it matters what you are proud of, "Pride" is a tool to gain standing amoung your fellow humans but I agree with Proteanw's thinking. Being proud of something you have achived is more humble and makes you more free then being proud of something you was born into. What you achive is also connected to what you was born into, if Proteanw. wasn't born with his grandmother he would probably not put as much weight to his conclusions as he do here.

My example was to point out that I would be shaming you, when you have done nothing wrong and are simply trying to live in peace, while ignoring somebody who is terrorizing you. Thats institutional discrimination that affects Blacks and other minorities and affect the quality of life for those who are injured.

I have a thing against pride of being born a certain way. I have no pride in being Thai and black or being born in the US. I could be Greek, Mongolian, or Mayan. I could be throwing up Greek philosophers and inventors, Mongolian conquerors, or Mayan astronomers. The thing is we have no power on where and how we're born, and to take the achievements of others in your group and use them as some justification of self- importance is just...plain wrong.

While I don't support the idea of pride for any ethnicity, I think it's important for people to know that they shouldn't be ashamed of it either, and racial minorities have been taught throughout history that they are lower than the racial majority. I'm not ashamed to be white, and no one one should be ashamed to be black, Asian, Hispanic, etc.

If societies in general didnt associate negative things with being black or dark then there would be no need for the reaction of black pride. The same thing comes with gay pride, muslim pride etc
Skin colour has no correlation with anything, unlike say a country where you can point to its values, aims, political system etc so it makes more sense to be proud of ones country than ones skin color.
Being proud to be black is akin to being proud to have dark eyes.
