@corporalkills Actually, the lyrics were written some time around 1860 by a man who, to my knowledge, never left the UK throughout his life. I somewhat doubt this song would have travelled this fast.
However, the tune itself is a French one from the early 18th century.

Our church choir has processed to this carol on Christmas Eve as far back as I can remember--at least 5 decades.
