Hi Keith, and thanks for the response! Did you convert them to RC and battery power, or were these some of the earlier Big Hauler mechanisms which I think were battery powered with the simple RC controllers?
Your diesels are so impressive (I love the big drivers and the side rod action!) they make me eager to find a used Big Hauler at next winter's train shows for a similar conversion project.
I like your live steam videos as well, though I've watched the diesel clips even more!
Hi Dennis, they were both track powered before I converted them. I removed all the electrical pick ups from the wheels as I don't use track power, only battery and live steam, and they would have shorted out on my track. I wired from the motor a basic circuit that has a 12 volt lead acid battery (as used in domestic burgular alarm panels and useful for adding weight), a fuse, a DPDT switch for froward/stop/reverse and a manual speed controller with rotary knob mounted on top. Cheers, Keith
Excellent scratch building! That's an ingenious use of the Bachmann mechanism, I'd never have guessed it. They look handsome, and it sounds like they are very robust performers!
Thanks, Keith! With those good instructions, even a non-wiring type like me might be able to make the conversion!
:)
Cheers,
Dennis

No problem Dennis. Good luck with your project. If you would like any photos uploading or any more info let me know.
Cheers

Thanks Dennis. They're certainly powerful and easy for my 2 young children to drive aswell without worrying that they will damage an expensive loco!
Best wishes, Keith
