I believe Aerith is her original name from the Japanese version of FF7, and for some reason Square decided to change it back after the first Kingdom Hearts was released.
They were still just SquareSoft back then, as well.

These songs will always have a special places in our hearts. Not only because they are very well done, heartwarming or wrenching, but also because for many of us we played this game in our childhood or teen years. It will always bring back memories of those times and cause us to feel happy and sad at the same time :)
It's really strange. When I first played FF7 - and for years afterwards, on subsequent playthroughs - I really disliked Aeris. Something about her irritated me. Maybe it was because of my age (11 - 17 or so), or some other reason.
Now whenever I played FF7 she's my favourite character. I think maybe it's because I realised that people like her are so very rare in the real world, and she brings a lot of light to a game that's actually quite dark most of the time. How we change with time, eh?
@batou1976 Aerith is the more correct translation. It was Aerith in the demo then for some reason was Aeris in the game. Now they call her properly Aerith in newer stuff.
best music ever. This song brings back so many memories when i used to play this game many years ago. They dont make RPgs like they used to. They are all based on graphics now instead of story line. I wish i could go back to this
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. That moment in the game was so unexpected...and the bastards don't even give you a moment of grief, you immediately have to fight a boss. My jaw literally dropped when I played that part, so many years ago...
i used to play this game as a kid back then my sis smashed the cd and till now i nevercouldnt finished this awesome game....do any of u know where do i can find his game on the net ??/??
Well..For those who say " This game Sucks" etc... are stupid because they never play this game before -.- If they play this game in the begining they will crie too trust me xD FF7 Forever ^^
I think this song shape my taste in video game music in general, i remember playing it a s a child i never before paid attention to background music but this changed everything
Gut-wrenchingly beautiful. This music was made all the more emotional by the fact that it is still playing during the JENOVA fight (as opposed to the JENOVA boss music) immediately after the unspeakable tragedy - you have to fight, whilst holding back the tears you can't stop.
@TheTKC Because you NEVER played this game before...if you play in the begining to the end you will crie man because you dont know the GAME history so go play it and say something. This is the best game ever Belive mate Play this game :)
The way that this song synchronized with the Holy materia falling and bouncing down to the water was masterful and made the moment that much more poignant. Though I remembered the scene vaguely from my dad's playthrough years before, this song helped it to touch me to the point that I nearly cried and could not wait to kick Jenova's ass.
Incidentally, I DID cry when Cloud sent Aerith off into the pool of water...
I heard the music students playing this at school. I was like to my friend "oh my god it's aeris(th) theme. he was just like what are you yammering about.
This song/moment is quite honestly the entire turning point of the game, it unleashes the aftermath in the discs to follow the first, it lets out an atmosphere that has yet to be touched by any game in the rpg series imo, epic quality, beautiful emotions tied to some of the best damn characters Squaresoft ever produced. The game is unmatched even to this date, SupraDarky thank you for posting this number one VGM on my list. *thumbs up*
This keeps makin me sad that Aerith was kill. I consider this the 2nd saddest music next to the Titanic violin theme. (it showed so many deaths and sad moments while being played)
Knew this would make it eventually. It's not the technical theme since it doesn't play with the overworld, but most of the games' songs are different mixes of this one song.
Even then you did say on your MGS Mantis video some songs get up due to memorable moments and it is hard to deny her life and SPOILERdeathSPOILER as small moments.
Although, I don't know why I say spoiler, the game is almost 15 years old! 13 right now! You can't really say it wouldn't be a spoiler at this point.
Sadest story I've ever seen in a video game. The story of the young, flower selling woman Aerith. She lived in the slums, made her way through the world with friends, find out almost everything what she wanted to know about herself, but then died. Murdered by the damned Sephiroth....
Took you long enough. All you need is the overwold theme and you'll be set on FF7 pieces for your list. Might as well not saturate it. Keep up the good work, Darky!
I was close getting teary, man...yeah, nice game, awesome music. I mean, it's Uematsu, he is the god of composing music for J-RPGs. Yeah good choise SupraDarky.
This song is so sad, but epic. I really like it. I know alot of people don't do it though but I keep Barret and Red over adding Aerith in. Since she um kinda dies.
It was quite an impact to know you couldn't bring her back. No phoenix down, no nothing. The whole event makes it seem more real. It makes them seem more vulnerable. That's something that many games are missing. I'm tired of invincible and unbeatable characters. They're all over. A story you can relate to, involves characters who have the human capacity to die.
The song will always ring through my memories. I'll never forget it. Simple and elegant. A rare provocation; grandly mixed feelings.
I knew this happened before I played. I only played a few months ago for the first time, but it still gave me goosebumps. I knew exactly when and how it would happen, but my mouth still dropped open and I was still upset by the scene. You can't realize the power of the scene until you've played the game and grown to love the characters.
This song is so sad yet heart warming. I remember the first time it plays when you're at Aeris' house (after she got captured by Shinra) and her mom explains that Aeris isn't her daughter. This is also sad because it plays when Aeris dies. ;_;
I never grew up with FF7, but I admit this scene would have probably moved me. Looking at it nowadays, it's very beautifully done. It's just there are so many fanboys that ruined this scene that the shock wasn't legitimate to me when I first found out about this.
This IS a revolutionary game as the first 3D RPG, however its graphics were unbalanced (from ugly polygons in the overworld to nice animation in battle/cutscenes), gameplay-wise FF5 was better and FF6 had better story.
@Sephiko I admit, I cried when it happened, and the boss fight I was so angry I was litterally wishing the thing to die so badly. And to chase Sephi to get what's coming to him. =P
@MasterBelmont No, that goes to a special moment from Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu. Still, it's almost a comical scene, really. Cloud's just resisting the temptation to kill her, and when he finally does, Sephiroth drops down from out of nowhere to do the job for him. Then we witness the most depressing game of Beer Pong in the world before Aeris' impromptu funeral.
Only a matter of time before this would show up... What else is there to say about this song? One of the best themes Nobuo ever made. Flawless and perfection at it's best! This is for you, Aerith!
Gosh. This score brings me back. I remember when (spoiler) happened. It was even more epic because I had an aqua ring on and all the attacks gave me life. My entire party was dead but Cloud. It was the perfect, angry-revenge battle that highlighted one of my favorite games of all time. Nostalgia, in only a way Uematsu could evoke.
Dang, how can you only play this game twice in 10 years!? While I don't go to the extremes that many fans with FFVII (I still like FFX, FFVI, and Tactics better), it really is a classic that deserves to be played once in awhile.
@GD2kplus I usually prefer to spend my time playing games I've never played, but recently I've been trying to replay the classics and the ones I loved the most as a kid. I feel like I need to do that now that I'm older and I can fully understand the stories and things like that. I don't regret it, I find it's a nice way to reinvigorate my love for video games.
@SupraDarky I know how you feel, revisiting games when you're a bit older can be immensely rewarding. Still, this game is without a doubt incredible, no matter what age you are. Still, I wish I'd play this game more often.... Can't though, I'm busy with the first replay in 8 years of Kingdom Hearts....
But other than revisiting games one played while young, it's also great to discover old ones you never had a chance to play. Thanks to the internet for online stores and such... ^.~
@GD2kplus I've got the original of course and played through it perhaps 5-6 times. I think I'll download the PS Network copy and go through it all again. This song just is too epic for me to not go through and play once more.
altough i have played this game only once, I really like it. not my favorite....but I'm glad I bought it for the ps3. they deserve money for the hell of a work here =)
this tune is probably the best.....Incredible work Uematsu!
This song, is probably the most important song in my life. Not only did it make me fall in love with the final fantasy series, it made me fall in love with video game music. ;_;, thank you SupraDarky.
Probably my most favorite theme in the series is Tifa's Theme, that theme... Aw man is sooooooooooo amazing. Aerith's is amazing too, when you listen to it you can literally feel her character: joy, kindness, hope, love and the sadness. Many emotions come up and that's when you know a great piece of music was well-composed.
I'm replaying the game for the second time in 10 years and I'm enjoying it a lot, I'm feeling the nostalgia the whole way through. Uematsu's music is probably half of the reason why, he definitely was in a good form when he composed the soundtrack.
@SupraDarky Cloud/Cid/Yuffie is technically the best and most effective party in the game...I can write an essay on how, but I'll just leave it at that.
@SupraDarky Cloud/Cid/Yuffie is probably the best team. The obligatory spiky haired protagonist who happens to be balanced, a physical beast, and a powerful magician. So yeah, nice pick. I was counting when you'd hit this song.
@SupraDarky Interestingly, I had a ton of nostalgia on my FIRST playthrough. I watched my dad play videogames all the time when I was a kid (largely because I enjoyed videogames but had very little privileges for them), and he played this when I was six or seven years old. Of course, I didn't really get the story all that well (or if I did, it didn't stick with me), but I just loved watching and hearing everything. I was so young that I didn't even know the game's name.
@amimizunofan22 I forgot about it over time, but once high-speed Internet graced our household, I was reminded of my love for the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy VII was always spoken of so highly. Once I got more or less free reign with video games in mid to late high school, I made this my first PSX game to play. As the journey unfolded, everything from my dad's playthrough came back to me. So, though it was my first time playing the game, I still had that nostalgia.
@amimizunofan22 This made the game an even greater experience than I could have anticipated. The graphics, settings, and music were like old acquaintances, while the story, character development, and full understanding of the plot were fresh and new. I cannot describe how much of a joy it was to play this game...now if only I could have back that initial experience.

@SupraDarky Yes, I've been doing that as well. It's nice to actually understand the story, as my childish mind could not comprehend a lot of it.

I remember when you had to fight Jenova with this song playing in the background. Such a good piece, and it really fits when it plays :)

On my first playthrough my team was Cloud/Red XIII/Tifa, this time I went with Cloud/Cid/Yuffie. I'm on the 2nd disc, just got the airship.
SupraDarky 1 year ago
@SupraDarky Cloud/Cid/Yuffie is technically the best and most effective party in the game...I can write an essay on how, but I'll just leave it at that.
Gunzfan123 1 year ago
@SupraDarky I always use Cloud/Red XIII/Yuffie, because they're pretty much a speedy team as far as i could tell.

@SupraDarky Yuffie ftw! *Slaps all other Yuffie haters*
TheRealVordox 1 year ago
@SupraDarky Cloud/Cid/Yuffie is probably the best team. The obligatory spiky haired protagonist who happens to be balanced, a physical beast, and a powerful magician. So yeah, nice pick. I was counting when you'd hit this song.

@SupraDarky Funny, cloud cid and yuffie were my Emerald weapon hunting team back in 97, or whenever it was. =)

@SupraDarky That's my team right now. Has been from when I could first get them together. :D

So, though it was my first time playing the game, I still had that nostalgia.
amimizunofan22 1 year ago
@amimizunofan22 This made the game an even greater experience than I could have anticipated. The graphics, settings, and music were like old acquaintances, while the story, character development, and full understanding of the plot were fresh and new. I cannot describe how much of a joy it was to play this game...now if only I could have back that initial experience.
