Even the experts considered Monza a track not really up-to-date (i.e. not safe). The F1 board wanted to run the Italian GP on Imola, but tradition prevailed...
if you look at the foootage that ive seen closely you will see the main cause of the accident was James Hunt turning in on Peterson. Patrese was blameless.
Actually, and correct to say that, depending on the periods in which they lived and the different technical standards, every great champion has given a lot to this sport .. Comparisons between samples from different eras are impossible. If Ronnie had lived in the 90 or 2000, or if Shumacker had lived in the 60 or 70 .. well, it was just an example ;-) Anyway, Ronnie is still the master of counter steering
johansson wasn't that bad - he nearly won at imola in 1985 when he ran out of fuel just 3 laps from the end, and he hauled an onyx to 3rd place at estoril in 1989
that's what I love about the F1 drivers of those days. That guy in the other F1 car jumps out and immeaditly runs to the flaming car of Peterson to help him get out. Rivals on the track, brothers off the track.
@User120000 Actually, that's a fallacy. In some instances drivers ignored other driver's in very dangerous situations in the old days. Check out how many cars went right by Roger Williamson's car, just drove right on by, car after car after car. He ended up dying despite the valiant efforts of one driver (his friend) Search for "Roger Williamson Formula one fatal crash"
Yea, in those days rally was much more dangerous, these guys go on a track whit safety barriers at a 280km/h, in rally, there like trees on both sides and they went much faster, i remember toivonen ones came to service area, and told the team to put more weights in the car, cause it was getting up in air on straights.
bad years for the f1. Very fast drivers with no sure cars, and a lot of cars in the grid. I loved that years, but the races (F1, F2, rally..)were very dangerous. Peterson, Villeneuve, Bellof, Toivonen... too much death legends.
It was Doctor´s Mistake , because he wqas well ,but the liquid inside b ones invaded the blood torrent by night , so he died poisoned...What a Shame, He could live and kept racing...
I believe that is Vittorio Brambilla, who was hit by a flying tire and suffered a serious head injury. He would not return to race again for another year.
Like my fellow said, this is a part of a film called "Pole Position". I watched it in a cinema of my country (Argentina) in 1980, and it shocked me for its violent scenes.
For anyone interested, read the article "The first of vikings" by Klaus Ewald. It`s on the web and it`s entirely worthwhile.
Does anyone know if this movie would be available on DVD or downlable? I still remember Villeneuve's interview originally in Italian. I suspect lots of crash footage here have been taken from the movie.
when ronnie died I didnt watch F1 for years... it was only when I saw schumi run into hill to win his bid that I found another great driver in F1. now schumi has left the sport (alive t.g.) it's back again to indifference
Like others, have never seen footage from this angle. Still amazed that the fire took hold so quick and raged so fierce. The starting procedure looked shambolic, and the lack of medical help disgraceful. F1 may be dull now, but at least they aren't incompetent like this footage shows.
That was Clay Regazzoni. Regazzoni was very pissed off that it took the medical team, the organizers and the race officials so long to get to the accident scene. Looks like he was telling Bernie to go get stuffed.
The blame is on the light man if anything. They removed the "flag down" start, because they thought it would be fairer and safer with a green light. Because the field would not be rolling at the back, and so the field would not be compressed.
So, Monza stuck a chicane before the Curva Grande to slow the dangerous high speed cars down. The light man put green on too early, so the cars bunched up too much. Then the track narrowed worsening the problem. Then they got to the new chicane, so needed to break at the same time in next to zero space. The situation snowballed... The fault was the light man, if it was anybody's.
F1 racing in those days were real racing; not the computerized crap we get today with clowns like Raikkonen. Peterson for example was a racer with raw talent. Ever since Senna died or at least when Schumi stopped the FI has just been deadly boring.
This accident was caused by the Starter not waiting for the grid marshalls at the back of the grid to indicate all cars stationary and ready. He let them go while cars at the back were still moving. This caused a "funnelling" effect and then all hell let loose. I am an Official Starter for single-seat cars and I can see exactly how this happened. Not James' fault, but I cannot condone his raving after the event on BBC TV
James Hunt did not cause this crash. He was touched by Patrese's car previously to the pile-up, causing him to spin into Peterson. Suggesting that an F1 driver KILLED another, is very unfair. Especially when Hunt was the man who pulled Peterson from the wreckage. Anybody blaming Hunt OR Patrese should be ashamed of themselves. Racing is a dangerous sport and the drivers acknowledge the risks, spectators should too.
I agree, racing is dangerous sport and racing drivers operate under enormous ammount of adrenaline, so it's very stupid to blame someone for racing accidents. But J.Hunt did excatly that: he put all the blame on Patrese, and have reminded BBC viewers for many years after that..
Many people think that deep down Hunt new he caused it that's why he always blamed Patrese. I don't know to be honest but i think the real cause of the crash was the starter starting the race too soon.
It's my belief that Patrese, who might've gotten a rolling start (not his fault), came rushing up on other cars and, being a RACER, swerved out onto the "apron" (not illegal) to pass rather than slam his brakes. When the track narrowed before turn 1, he had to get back in line, it was very crowded because of the starter's botch, he accidentally bumped Hunt, which shoved Hunt into Peterson. A racing accident, could've happened to anyone.
Bad surgery killed Peterson. He had 32 breaks in both legs, they should have amputated but chose to try and fix. The cause of the crash was the starter not letting all the cars line up. Patrese may have bullied him into starting the race by edging forward but it was a racing accident. If you get a chance read Johnny Tiplers book on Ronnie called Super Swede. It's a fascinating read!
No,it was not case of bad surgery!By today's surgical standards he was treated correctly.
Reasons why Peterrson developed fatal complication (fat embolism), after by themselves not life threatening injuries, lie in very poor track organisation and the fact that he lied over a 20 minutes on the track without recieveng any real medical help!Medical help in first minutes after crash was essential, but sadly not available to Ronnie!
I've read lots of accounts and the doctors wanted to amputate Ronnie's leg but he insisted they try to save it. Also, in the film you see Regazzoni gesticulating to Ecclestone, this was because there were no doctors available on the scene. Also, they originally thought Brambilla was more seriously injured so most of the medical attention was given to him.
They could amputate his leg below the knee, but biggest problem was in fact his fractured femur, injury that most commonly cause fat embolism. On this video you can see that Ronnie is transported without any immobilisation an suffering from great pain.If you account slow reaction by track medics, we already have three BIG mistakes in early medical treatment that could lead to fatal complications..If prof.Sid Watkins was there in the right time things could maybe be very different!
To blame anyone for this crash is almost impossible. I have only seen this video but to me there is inconclusive evidence. And I know Peterson had broken legs but it almost looked like half of his leg was missing. RIP.
That's just wrong. James Hunt was a great man and a great champion. Sure he was wrong to blame Patrese, but at the time Riccardo was a wild driver with a bad rep.
you are both wrong. The only person at fault here was the race marshall. He let the race begin before all the cars had even stopped on the grid. Try and find a video from the reverse angle.
hunt didn't drive into peterson deliberately u know, no one did, it was purely a racing incident, and it came about as a result of an incompetent race marshal
for 15 years u mean, cause hunt died in 93. i don't know why he never ceased 2 blame patrese, but if it was that even b4 the crash he didnt like him, well then...
Apparently poor Ronnie did not even recieve any medical help by the Italian authorities until almost 20 minutes after the crash. Had he had this he would most likely have survived..
Now things in this crash looked worse for vittorio brambilla,he got very punched up in the crash and was left unconscious, while ronnie was conscious.for ronnie many thought hed live, but he died cause of fat embolism.
Why do I have a weird feeling that this was part of some Special that the Italians did about F1? I say this since because this sounds like the same guy that described the Tom Pryce Incident.
You're right. Was it the documentary done in 1980 with interviews of Andretti and Villeneuve (Pole Position I think was the title)? I saw it in french version in mid-80s.
It took 20 minutes before the Italian circuit dispatched medical help to the scene. Thats right, Ronnie lied 20 minutes on the ground with his legs totally fucked up. He was helped out from the burning car by other drivers.
Peterson was on the ground in front of the car with his lower leg still in the remains of the car when emergency crews and other drivers first arrived at his wreckage. Some drivers were trying to kick his leg out of the car when Hunt grabbed went into the flames and grabbed hold of his leg and released it. He then pulled him away from the wreckage by his overalls.
Peterson was able to get himself partially out of the car but his badly broke leg got hung up in the front of the wreckage. Hunt went in and pulled him to a safe distance from the fire.
Another interesting thing about this video is Clay Regazzoni's reactions (starting at about 5:00) to some of the higher up's. He's berating an official about time while pointing to his watch, then later confronts Bernie Ecc. He was pretty ticked off obviously that it took so long for F1 officials to get to the accident scene.
^Indeed. An awful, tragic accident that should have been avoided.
The idiot starter only put the green light on when the first six cars were lined up on the grid and therefore, none of the cars towards of the back had anywhere to go, especially poor Ronnie...
Shocking images, a needless tragedy. Not sure if anyone else noticed, but at about 2'48", part of the same creepy music from the videos of the Tom Pryce Kyalami tragedy kicks in...?
I noticed that too! Seems the Italians love this kind of creepy, crappy music. But this video is rare and certainly a one-of-a-kind. It adds more to this tragedy. I loved Ronnie. He and Mario were my favorite drivers then.

The crash wasn't actually directly fatal - it was poor medical treatment in hospital which allowed bone marrow to pass into his bloodstream.
superalexo 4 years ago 3
To blame anyone for this crash is almost impossible. I have only seen this video but to me there is inconclusive evidence. And I know Peterson had broken legs but it almost looked like half of his leg was missing. RIP.

james hunt killed peterson

of course you are jokin'. ;-)
Lack of safety in that F1 era was the real problem.

hunt made the poor move, he choked when patrese went wide ... patrese had nothing to do with it ... hunt blamed him to hide his own guilt.
i hated james hunt till he died ... and then i had a beer.
devilchef01 4 years ago
That's just wrong. James Hunt was a great man and a great champion. Sure he was wrong to blame Patrese, but at the time Riccardo was a wild driver with a bad rep.
RIP to both James and the great Ronnie.

yes ... he WAS a moron.
devilchef01 4 years ago
u r plain wrong 2 say that - and u're forgetting that hunt and several other drivers pulled peterson from his burning lotus
timmyt258 3 years ago
I did not forget that. Ricardo Patrese had absolutely nothing to do with the accident but Hunt did.
devilchef01 3 years ago
you are both wrong. The only person at fault here was the race marshall. He let the race begin before all the cars had even stopped on the grid. Try and find a video from the reverse angle.
vertigo8 3 years ago
hunt didn't drive into peterson deliberately u know, no one did, it was purely a racing incident, and it came about as a result of an incompetent race marshal
timmyt258 3 years ago
then Hunt shouldn't have blamed Patrese for 20 years then should he?
devilchef01 3 years ago 3
for 15 years u mean, cause hunt died in 93. i don't know why he never ceased 2 blame patrese, but if it was that even b4 the crash he didnt like him, well then...

he was not a great man... he was just a man...and a flakey one to boot.

Apparently poor Ronnie did not even recieve any medical help by the Italian authorities until almost 20 minutes after the crash. Had he had this he would most likely have survived..
mcqueenthee 4 years ago 2
Now things in this crash looked worse for vittorio brambilla,he got very punched up in the crash and was left unconscious, while ronnie was conscious.for ronnie many thought hed live, but he died cause of fat embolism.

Why do I have a weird feeling that this was part of some Special that the Italians did about F1? I say this since because this sounds like the same guy that described the Tom Pryce Incident.
JokaPlaya 5 years ago
You're right. Was it the documentary done in 1980 with interviews of Andretti and Villeneuve (Pole Position I think was the title)? I saw it in french version in mid-80s.

aside from the music this is fascinating footage, quite rare. Thanks for sharing this

I´m sorry tho say this. but it sounds like a cheap italian porn film. Ronnie didnt haw to die. but the italian doctors made a false diagnose.
STS107 5 years ago
I don't know why James Hunt blames Patrese for this incident...It was clearly Hunt's fault Peterson died!
SkullyCollins 5 years ago
It took 20 minutes before the Italian circuit dispatched medical help to the scene. Thats right, Ronnie lied 20 minutes on the ground with his legs totally fucked up. He was helped out from the burning car by other drivers.
Elucca 5 years ago 2
Peterson was on the ground in front of the car with his lower leg still in the remains of the car when emergency crews and other drivers first arrived at his wreckage. Some drivers were trying to kick his leg out of the car when Hunt grabbed went into the flames and grabbed hold of his leg and released it. He then pulled him away from the wreckage by his overalls.
Troylito 5 years ago 2
Peterson was able to get himself partially out of the car but his badly broke leg got hung up in the front of the wreckage. Hunt went in and pulled him to a safe distance from the fire.
Troylito 5 years ago 2
Another interesting thing about this video is Clay Regazzoni's reactions (starting at about 5:00) to some of the higher up's. He's berating an official about time while pointing to his watch, then later confronts Bernie Ecc. He was pretty ticked off obviously that it took so long for F1 officials to get to the accident scene.
Troylito 5 years ago 2
Oh never mind, he was Swedish. I was thinking of Jo Siffert lol.
Wizerud 5 years ago 2
He was Swiss.

And Jo Bonnier, the first Swede to ever win a Grand Prix.

Are you forgetting Gunnar Nilsson? :)
Wizerud 5 years ago 2
And Stefan Johansson
jelzl 5 years ago
The only swedish Formula 1 driver. It was unfair that he was to perish in this. He will be always remembered as the "Super Sweede".
Jusu 5 years ago
Hardly. Jo Bonnier and Gunnar Nilsson won races. And there were others, like Stefan Johansson.

^Indeed. An awful, tragic accident that should have been avoided.
The idiot starter only put the green light on when the first six cars were lined up on the grid and therefore, none of the cars towards of the back had anywhere to go, especially poor Ronnie...
wak4life 5 years ago 2
Ronnie, 28 years gone today, still very much missed and fondly remembered.
boelin 5 years ago 2
Shocking images, a needless tragedy. Not sure if anyone else noticed, but at about 2'48", part of the same creepy music from the videos of the Tom Pryce Kyalami tragedy kicks in...?
wak4life 5 years ago
I noticed that too! Seems the Italians love this kind of creepy, crappy music. But this video is rare and certainly a one-of-a-kind. It adds more to this tragedy. I loved Ronnie. He and Mario were my favorite drivers then.
...as was Tom Pryce.
