If you want to criticize someones work you should have the courtesy of offering specific suggestions that might better or improve them. I think you did a fabulous job. Yes it's true, if you're a professional covering someone else's song, you'd better meet certain criteria in your attempt like, showing respect to the original artist and to do yourself justice in your own interpretation. I think you tried way to hard to "make it your own". It's not yours, it's Edie Brickell's. Sing it better than her, then you've made it your own. No reason to make neeedless "artistic interpretations" or whatever, you just make it sound worse. Edie has done it the best so far, your goal is to do it better than her, not worse.

Nice interpretation of that song, it sounds different from the original but is doesn't sound "wrong", as many covers do. I think you made some adjustments and alterations to fit it into the limits of what you can do, to such an effect that a first time listener might be inclined to believe that it was supposed to be just this way. Edie and the New Bohemians had that one fairly decent debut album in them and then just fell apart. Edie herself was just so cute that her loopy presence worked for a while, but her being a dumbass plus her bandmates infighting and inability to write more satisfying songs torpoedoed their career in short order.
