  • JUST MADE IT... In 1970 "Up The Latter To The Roof" peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Billboard's Top 10 and it spent a total of 14 weeks in the Top 100...

This record was the 1st to chart after Diana Ross' departure; of course the name went back to just 'The Supremes'...

  • What's with all the mean spirited comments here? Diana Ross is a icon and after she left The Supremes the group still recorded some good music. Accentuate to positive, eliminate the negative.

  • In order to have a hero you need villian and Diana Ross has been cast as the villain -- so be it, she's no saint she also no sinner. Love the Supremes with or without Diana Ross.

  • Well DetroitLives313 & Nellie David 1000, Miss Mary never had a hit PERIOD, EVER, Besides your Myopic View is as Irrelevant as Miss Mary herself, being that Diana Ross is an "INTERNATIONAL" Superstar & Chart Positions in countries Outside the US show a Different Story

  • I wouldn't want to be remembered as a Backstabbing, Cocaine Addicted Sleaze Bag, Wanna Be Miss "merrick71"

  • This is one of my favorite songs from that era. The singer's voice is beautiful. I believe this came out about the same time "if I were your woman" by Gladus Knight and the Pips (another black female artist I loved). I wished the group had stayed together to make more music. Hey...don't come down on Diana Ross. I have all the Supremes songs on CD and think they was one of the greatest (if not the best) to come out of the 60s. Diana had a nice career after she left the Supremes!

  • Wasn't this on a episode of Living Single?.I remember Queen Latifah was sings this song

  • Not True Nellie David, 1970 ended with this song Number 10 on the Charts, Diana scored Number 1 with Ain`t No Moutain High Enough, The 13th Number One with her as lead, Actually `Stoned Love`` was The Post Diana Supremes Biggest Hit, (Number 7 on the Pop Chart), The Supremes NEVER had a Number 1 after the departure of Ross & NEVER hit Top 10 again after the departure of Jean Terrell

You are Stupid, Jealous & Bitter, Is your Real Name Mary Wilson

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear At least Mary Wilson will be forever remembered, unlike yourself. She won't be some forgotten queen, long forgotten in some forlorn, lonely grave as you will most likely will be. So sad.

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear and Diana Ross NEVER had another number one hit after "Dreamgirl, My Life As A Supreme"! Soooooo........LOL!

  • another smash hit for the group. poor ross didnt know at the time wot hit er. the group were better without her.

  • @neildavid1000 Exactly! Po Diane.....

  • @jettvallon I sooo agree Jettvallon-God has created all of this to enjoy the beauty that is all around-enjoy the voices, and the results they all helped to pave. We have Motown as well as Ella and Dina, and Sarah, as well as Lena,,,,We have to learn this- it is all of love-or we all perish-

This is the most perfect thing I've ever heard when you get perched on your own high horse, stop, take a moment and say-

'Let He who is without Sin, cast the first stone'

  • Don't squble just Enjoy Great music

  • This record is 75% better than all the Diana Ross-era Supremes records combined. I love Jean Terrell...

  • I just always thought that the original members of the supremes sang this song.

  • just gorgeous

  • Inspirational..."closer to Heaven"!!

  • Mary Wilson is a bitch. FUck her.

  • @Calomante How/Why

  • @96CLD cuz she was talking shit about my momma Diva Diana Ross. Saying things about her she is fake and Diana Ross shouted her out when she won her lifetime achievement award shes jealous of Diana Ross....its called being bitter.

  • This song borders on touchy-feely, 1969 Fifth Dimension "Aquarius" pomp... I said borders. It manages to pull it off so brilliantly, with a great arrangement, great production, deadly catchy chorus and singing that destroys any Fifth Dimension tune and even bettered lots of early Diana Ross solo. And my God I could listen to the bass line all day. Is that not the great James Jamerson as usual?

  • @parafacsub Someday We Will be Together was headlined as a Supreme's song not Diana Ross. Here first credited solo song was Reach and Touch and yes, I don think Up the Ladder to the Roof is a better song. I guess we can agree to disagree on this one.

  • TheSupremes were so much more than Diana Ross

  • @TheArekussu oh Girl WAKE UP and Smell the coffee. you must be living on the moon

  • This is a perfect recording...unforgettable. Jean kicks ass while Mary and Cindy sound like angels from heaven. I never get tired of listening to it.

  • This song was better then Diana Ross's first solo song-Reach out and touch I am sure we can all agree on that! This song was mixed so beautifully I could listen to it all day. Reminds me of my youth way back in April, 1970 when it first came out.

  • @chuckbuckbobuck Do you REALLY think this is better than "Someday We'll Be Together"?THAT was Diana's first solo single(if you don't count "Love Child") In fact,"Reach Out And Touch" was actually Diana's 3rd offering. And yes, you probably DO think that that this is better than Reach Out BECAUSE it reminds you of your long gone youth. As a younger person, I think this has nothing on Reach Out And Touch, which can't have been THAT bad if The Ghetto Supremes went on to record it with The Four Tops!

  • You Crazy Old Troll (Don't care What You Think), I want Diana's Hat Back!, Tell that Bitch Mary to Fork it Over!

  • THE MIGHTY SUPREMES...MOTOWN FOR LIFE XX

  • Any Supremes song minus Ross is a good song. It leaves room for the music once that enormous ego gets out of the way.

  • @polyesterpoontang you must have dirt in your ears. a supremes song without diana ross is a dud..they dont even play this on oldies station

  • @blkshepherd It's on the radio all the time, you simpleton!

  • @kurtsupreme hey you Drag queen that want to be a Supreme so bad you name yourself kurtsupreme. you fat big bellie drag queen in a cheap moth eaten gown that even Mary Wilson dont want(and thats a stretch! she keeps everything! I bet You hear MORE Diana era Supremes than Jean Mary and the newer supremes. Kurt the Nutty Supreme.

  • Wonder why they NEVER saw Another Number 1 Hit again carolinaguy?, A Number 7 & and a Number 10 in 7 Years

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear And I wonder after 3 years of 2-3 1 hits a year, they went down to 1 per year? Please don't try to insinuate Diana can sing better than Jean. Don't do that to yourself. On this song you have a great lead singer, and the group harmonies are back (like in the beginning). But a direct answer to your question, no way Motown was going to let this group outsell Diana, which they were doing the first 2 years after Miss Ross left the group.

  • @carolinaguy1973 This group was somewhat good after Diana left (but we all know why) but the great was damn bad after Florence Ballard was ousted.

  • They certainly sounded better than the "Diana Ross and the Supremes" grouping.

  • Miss Mary Pretty! LOL!!!!! ROTLFMAO!!!!!!, She's Over 200lb's & her Chin Implant is Slipping into her Cleavage, After Touring/ Band, Crew salaries, Miss Mary Makes Miniumum wage, I intend to attend her "Foreclosure Sale" in Henderson Nevada & Pick up some of the Items she stole from Diana Ross over the years, (she even admits in her book to stealing a Fur Hat)

I'll Be THE PRETTIEST SUPREME EVER!!!!

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear You'll Be The Prettiest Supreme Ever? But, didn't OnlineAdmin1 think HE was? What's he gonna think when he learns how to read your post? He'll probably come and kick your butt - assuming he's willing to wade through 8 inches of dingle-berries to get to it.

And please, do come to the auction.... I'll be there too. We'll talk....

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Also some of the proceeds from the "foreclosure sale" should go to buy Ross a decent wig, a girdle for her protuding stomach, some botox for the face and a new set of dentures. It's only fair...

  • @weightfeather1 No and no! Jean Terrell is not imitating Diane Ross. Jean Terrell has a higher more melodic voice and is infinitely a better singer than Ross. No, the Supremes last hit was "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking" in 1976. Check it out.

  • Jean terrell did a good job, I wonder why berry didn't make mary who? the lead singer. Oh yeah my bad, mary had to clap and hum.

    The QUINTESSENTIAL background singer

  • Just to let you know, this song was released in February 1970 as Motown 1162(Motown's Record label)& Jean Terrell is singing the lead vocals!

  • This is as good as anything Diana and the girls did with HDH.

  • Hey Detroit, We all know why Diana Ross can't stand Mary Wilson, Why does Jean Terrell dislike her so much?, Perhaps she's just Toxic?

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Maybe they are jealous because Mary is prettier than them, a classic beauty. Also maybe because she is making more money now than the both of them? I'm just saying.........!

  • No Diana Ross doesn't Drink anymore, Did Mary Wilson ever Put down her Crack Pipe?, or get that Vaginal Prolapse fixed?

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Why are weird people also repulsive like you!

Just because you smell like shit, doesn't mean you have to eat it, farmboy!

  • @fntime Farmboy?, Is that the best you can do?, Perhaps your a Washed Up Old Crack Diva with a Scat Obsession ? or Worse a Bitter, Jealous, Duplicitous, Backstabbing Bitch, Living through the Reflected Glory of others?

  • @fntime Oh My, Just read your Channel Comments!, You're about as Popular there as Mary Wilson is, on the Billboard Charts, Too Bad, So Sad!

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear lolol hey Bear looks like we got another one ,he or she who ever it is sounds like another one of marys pole vaulters.

  • @wreepeet I've never understood the Miss Mary Drones, Jean was a Fine Vocalist, she had no use or Time for Miss Mary, Flo was a fine Vocalist, Mary was no more than a Buffer between Diana & Flo, (and a Fluffer for Lonely Married men!)

  • This is the Supremes at their best! Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong forever....!!!!!!

  • yessiree

  • Had this been relaeased under Diana Ross & The Supremes, it would of been considered a Flop (Number 10 Billboard), Chew on that retrorio, No need to Trash Diana!

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Is Diane Ross still acoholic ?

  • @DetroitLives313 - marilyn still a whore?

  • Best Supreme's song ever. (Sorry, Diana! I mean, what's better?)

  • Is that a cat at 0:41?

  • @sg1rob LOL never noticed that before hahaha

  • Is that a cat at 0:41?

  • ?Cindy not comfortable on stage??Never heard that. If anyone didnt it was Jean.

  • ダイアナ・ロスが抜けた、70年代シュープリームスが、何故か好きだった!~UpThe Ladder Of

    The Roof~名曲だ!

  • I really like this song, quite different to the earlier Supremes hits, but I do like the the early 1970's Supremes songs. Can anyone tell me why the Supremes did not continue being a big chart act further on in to the 70's? From a UK perspective the Three Degrees took off, and 'replaced them' from about 1974 onwards

  • @pandakins99 The short answer is Berry Gordy. He wanted to replace Jean at the very last minute and when Mary and Cindy rebelled he 'washed his hands' of the group and they didn't have much promotional backing from the company though they did make some great records.

Later, some bad business decisions by Mary (who wanted her husband to manage them) convinced Jean (and I believe Cindy who briefly rejoined after Lynda Lawrence's short membership) to leave and the group.

  • It's a shame the group couldn't have continued as it was. Diana Ross on leads, lovely as Jean is, Diana with THIS arrangement PLUS Cindy & Mary finally letting out on backgrounds and really a part of a SUPERGROUP???? This record would have been #1.

  • @SmoothCinnamonX WHAT are you smoking these days? Ross leading on this song? FORGET IT! It would have turn out another oooh oooh baby love kind of tune. Only the soulful sounds of Jean Terrell could do justice to this wonderful anthem. By the way, Up The Ladder did make it to the Top 10...

  • @bellacharo This song could only have been this great with the great Jean Terrell being back by Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong! They sang like angels together........"

  • You had to listen close, Jean Terrel sounded a lot like Diana Ross. Supremes For Ever!

  • Comment removed

  • No sessions singers needed here. They never were needed.

  • Fabulous Song !

  • I think there more than just Jean, Mary and Cindy in the background. Listen closely, it's a small choir back there!

  • @Dianaross70 Might have double-tracked their voices, possibly. :-)

  • Up The!

  • me and my friends use to sing this song man those were happy times as i was growing up...i never missed diana

  • Jean Terrell was no slouch as a singer!

  • Of the various verions of the Supremes this is a very close second to DFM as my favorite lineup (don't much care for the whole DRATS era)

I think that's why I really, really wish they'd retired the name and called themselves something different.

I understand why they didn't (different time, different marketing blah blah blah) but still....

I think they'd be better remembered as the awesome group they were with a different, better, name.

For me the end of the Supremes was when Flo left.

  • @mafketays I feel you on Flo. Mary said it herself, that once Flo was gone, the dream was over.

  • DID NOT MISS DIANA'S CATTY VOCALS! VERY SWEET

  • GOOD SONG KINDA FUNKY

  • This record is a gem! We went to a concert to see the Supremes here in Los Angeles, Ca. Back in the 70's.........I was sitting in the front row and I shook Mary Wilson's hand at end of this tune! She was awesome!

  • My schools show choir did this song and danced to it but they had it more up beat and it was awesome!!!!!

  • This is the first 45 I ever owned as a little kid, my older brother bought it for me and I just played it over and over again, played it until the vinyl wore out and there was nothing left to play, the grooves in the record were shot, but here's the thing ... the 45 got played out (literally), but the song NEVER got played out!!

Seriously, I never got tired of listening to it, not even a little bit, in fact I still love it today every bit as much as I did then if not more.

  • Better times and brighter days, indeed. Great song.

  • Love that this song charted higher than Ross's solo 1st single, much to Barry Gordy's chagrin.

  • @greggesimmons - Yeah.....look what happened! Ha!

  • That picture isnt the original Supremes is it !! My big sister and my Godmother used to listen to this ,so i was the Little kid that was in there way .. Lol!!

  • @2009Denisem Oh yes, oh yes!!! You took the thoughts right out of my head!! I cannot imagine ever having that much fun ever again, and I sometimes wonder if people really understand how not-fun life is now.....

  • LOVE this. Diana Ross rest in peace. Mary Wilson you're the greatest. I saw you in the airport once.

  • @4Y83Z120401 What do you mean Diana Ross rest in peace?

  • this is not the supremes

  • @ferbieboi AGREED . The Supremes were not The Supremes without Diana Ross . they sounded like an entirely different group .

  • @Medic83301 Well, Keep in mind that 2 of the original singers were gone,Diana Ross & Forence Ballard; I guess it could be said there was a different group & sound. Things were changing around Motown too. Other artists we attempting new & innovative things.

  • Great song and wonderful arrangement. Genius...feelgood music at its best.

  • This is my favorite song after Jean took over!

  • One of my all-time favorite songs of all time all time all time! Frank Wilson producer is an absolute genius!

  • Ah....baby...oh yea.... this is the classic. Dynamic. Untouchable. Thanks for sharing.

  • Right on.

  • Great Song !! Thanks for posting !!

  • i'm not impressed, it was okay

nothing like the real supremes. the new girl is not pretty

  • Actually 33 hits. Much more than a couple. I love this tune I keep playing it over & over. Their voices were so beautiful together. And it is a positive & joyful message.

  • I listened to this tune here last night. I am ashamed to admit that I had forgotten the Supremes performed and cranked out a couple of hits after Diana split. I love this tune, stuck in my head all day at work. At one point I was actually trying to sing a few bars. My twenty- something co workers thought I had lost my mind. I don't care. I can see why it was a hit. Thanks for planting it here on you tube.

  • the gowns are flawless

  • All I can do is replay over and over again!!

  • AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE MOTOWN MUSIC!

  • all i can say is that both versions ofthe supremes were good. diana vs jean is not valid here. each brought something different to the table.

  • @anna2k2 - Diana's ego got too big for the group.

  • Ok I was like "Where is Diana"?????

  • @Karamel2233 Jean Terrell replaced Diana as the Supremes lead singer!

  • I love at 2:25 how it builds up to a climax(no pun intended). Every second of this song rocks.

  • Yeah, This Song is great for bad times.

  • Believe me you will never beet Tamla xxxxx Stevie Wonder is a genius, supremes Diana ross the list is endless xxxx Stevie Wonder at age 13 was making hits for Tamla xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Awsum people with amazing talents . Never ending .

  • Favorite line up next to the original group! Great song for "The New Supremes"...Love the album cover!

  • fall of 1970? Great Song-

  • These gowns were first worn by Diana, Mary and Cindy on Ed Sullivan as were the black ones on the back cover of the LP - both sets were sadly part of the 27 lost in the Mexican dressing room fire. Not sure why some sets of beadings were missing on Jean's costume? Jean is wearing Mary's and Mary is wearing Diana's! XX

  • As a young Canadian girl growing up I always looked up to The Supremes. They were my idols. Not bad for a little white girl, eh?

  • How great are the Supremes, simply the best.

  • One the greatest and most enduring songs Motown or the Supremes ever recorded!

Jean, Mary and Cindy were awesome.

  • A song of pure inspiration and emotion!!!

  • hey lamontCJ thanks for this gem! and a thanks to 2009denisem for requestin me to check it out:-)

  • Love this song-"Stay with me" fall of 70?

  • This song and Stoned Love are the masterpieces of the Supremes. They had many, many wonderful songs, but these are the ones that, the first time I heard them, sent a tingle up my spine.

  • awesome song~

Soooo mellow. Any body else gone up the ladder?

  • Every bit as good as anything the Supremes did with Holland-Dozier -Holland.

  • I've never heard this before, but came to find it through a new musical 'Everyday Rapture'. Actress Sherie Rene Scott sings this song in the show with a new more upbeat feeling to it. Both are great and I'd definitely suggest giving Sherie's version a listen :)

  • supreme in evry sense of the world! Love this track...........

  • I remember listening to this in bed when my mom played it on the HiFi. I was just a little kid, but it feels like just the other day. I pass that house every day on my way to work...

  • @2009Denisem To Better Times...

    And Better Days :)

    Great Mellow words...

Man I miss Motown songs '-'

  • @2009Denisem Thank U girl 4 this sweet song!

They were quite good even w/o Diana :)

  • A beautiful song-the Supremes went on to make incredible music even without Diana!!

  • This is a great song and performance. Diana and Flo had nothing to do with it - pro or con. Please don't let the Diana

and Flo stuff get in the way. Just Enjoy!

  • Like a joyous hymn! These ladies were something else. Thanks!

  • My mother went to school with Mz. Ross. And she told me exactly what Diane was like. Thats right her real first name is Diane not Diana. And she did sleep her way to the top. Mary was correct in her opinion of her. And this is first hand info from my mom.

  • I definitely believe you. Diana Ross is a woman made from her own image IMO. The most sad thing about the supremes is that Florence Ballard - who I have heard had the BEST voice of the ladies - died with no money. How does that happen?! hmmmmmm Makes me sick thinking about it. Mr Gordy you could have done this differently but you didnt shame onh YOU

  • @janet82905 a lot of successful women have to decide on what way to make it to the top....Diane/Diana made it ...lets not judge

  • All you people dragging Diana's name through the mud.. enough already! You can't rewrite history. If Diana hadn't fronted the group, they would have been possibly a bit more 'soulful' but otherwise another relatively obscure Motown act. Diana's magic is what made them transcend.. no matter who she may have slept with. But I suppose then you could have knocked yourself out talking about the inter-personal politics of the Marvelettes! (no disrespect to those great ladies intended).

  • @mecon01 AGREE!!! 1,000%

    Wayne in Texas

  • @mecon01 Diana was good, but as far as transcending, it was the songwriting of Holland-Dozier-Holland that transcended. Maybe Diana was lucky herself to be singing the songs of H-D-H. Also, being backed by the Motown house band, the best in the business. And the Marvellettes and the Vandellas were not obscure.

  • @57highland Hey, I'm not saying it was Diana only that made the group what it was.. it took H-D-H, Gordy, the ladies .. everybody involved to make that happen. Diana is just not a soulful singer.. she's modern, light, definitely had a 'rock sensibilty'.. how many other ways can I say it? I think it's that quality that shaped the Supremes differently from the other Motown acts. Imho H-D-H were phenomenal writers, and I never mentioned the Vandellas lol :-)

  • @mecon01 I didn't mean question you. But I've read that Motown got "political" at times, even with the male groups. The Spinners, for example, left Motown because they felt they were getting short-changed in favor of the big hitters (The Temptatons & The 4 Tops). So, maybe it was the same with the female groups; maybe The Marvellettes & Vandellas could have been bigger (though I think they both did quite well). I mentioned H-D-H because they were on par, as songwriters, with Lennon & McCartney.

  • @57highland

It certainly did I think it was called the second coming of Motown and I personally think some even more classic music came out of Motown in 70' 71 and 72. :)))))))))))) Also think Stevie's Innervision, Living for the City and of course Marvin's What's Going on :)))))))))))))))))))) x 1 million.

  • @Highercroft68 Yes, your right. There was a 2nd Motown Golden Age in the early to mid 70s: the New Supremes, Diana Ross (solo), Jackson 5, later Temptations, 4 Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, even the white rock and roll group Rare Earth. I was a teen then, and there were always at least a couple Motown records on the charts on a given day in that era.

  • Comment removed

  • Diana got where she got because her voice had crossover appeal, young people. Gordy was trying to not focus on color (and not to have a "black" sound), a hot topic and a big negative when I was growing up in the 60s. Diana was our version of Leslie Gore, that kind of bubbly-sugary voice. Same for the Ronettes.

  • This is my favorite Supremes song by far.

  • @MissLeigh78 Mine too...and Stoned Love...both without Diana and I love Diana Ross.

  • @OnCloudNine62 Oooh I adore Stoned Love also - to me a massive anti-racist anthem amongst other things. :))

  • @MissLeigh78 mine to missleigh

  • Conneemarthahelvetia, you are right. Diana would have blown away the crowd if she stayed for one more year. But, I also like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough".

  • I think that if Diana would have been with the Supremes for one more year, she really could have made this, Stoned Love, and Everybody's Got the Right to Love in the top 10 with Up the Ladder number one. If that happened though, we wouldn't have her fabulous version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

  • i disagree connee..first of all , if diana had stayed ,Frank Wilson probably would not have been producing the Supremes albums (as he did when Diana left )..a change in direction was what made the 70s Supremes a success with the public Plans had been made to take Diana from the group as early as 1967 (after HDH left), so i believe if they had waited any longer, the Supremes 70s albums /singles would have suffered

  • This was actually a bigger hit than Diana Ross' debut single in the US.

  • I have taken alot of flak for this over the years, but I could care less. I prefer the Jean Terrell years, always have always will.

  • Alot of people mistake this as a Diana Ross song. This was the first LP without her and featuring Jeannie Terrell on lead....and she killed it! If you like this check out her other songs. A Philly native~Her voice in angelic!

  • Every bit as good as anything Holland-Dozier did with the girls.

  • i recall Vanessa Williams singing this song in 1984 (in medley form) in the miss america pageant

  • saw an act on Living Single gave me the thought to search for the song. I have played it and replayed for atleast 30 minutes. It is a song that gets you to moving.

  • My favorite Supremes hit...by far

  • motown music was/is designed to always

sound modern. and out lasted lot of other

    tunes from this year ect.

  • @vivahb1970 well if you take a hard musical look at the year , a lot of music from 1970-71 has a lot of uplift and optimsm to it ..people were trying to wash away the bad memories of the 60s i think..motown , invictus , atlantic , bell , all had enduring singles from that era

  • like i said motown motown motown, keep

mungo jerry. and plastic macks. long live the 1960s!

  • It's difficult to describe how bracing and fresh this sounded in March 1970, but we all wasted no time gobbling it up. From first note to last it was all optimism, energy, urgency and even a nice suggestion of sexual bliss. Not since before Florence left did any Supremes single sound so obviously a GROUP effort. Frank Wilson gave them a fiery new relevance, and Jean Terrell could not have a wished a more stunning debut. The record remains majestic near-40 years later.

  • That's nicely put, dvlaries.

  • what a poignant comment about this great tune and the era that it was introduced in-right on with your observation
