  • this song makes me think of that paiting on hidden palace's wall,it's like it's saying: "the doomsday is near and one hero shall save us all"

  • This level makes me think of a crashed boat

  • I like this a lot better than the first act.

  • I liek

  • I love how the music just changed the feel of everything. Playing this game as a kid, it felt like everything was cooling off in this stage. Definitely one of my favourites. Now that I'm into music production, I have remastered a few Sonic the hedgehog tunes, this one included. You can find them on my channel. It really takes you back all those years, to those good memories.

    ~Syllix

  • In my opinion this was the best Zone in SAK especially if you consider Hidden Palace Zone part of it.

  • I love Sonic and its musics aren't totally foreign to it.

  • I really loved how this game incorporated a variation of the Act 1 themes for Act 2. And Lava Reef Zone really has a very fitting contrast between the two - it is a much "cooler" version of Act 1, which matches with the "cooler" colors of Act 2.

  • There is something mysterious about this song...

  • @FrameRunnerX maybe tails doll or mephiles weird....

  • this song explains the history of the alter, and the brilliance of the chaos emeralds and the master emerald

  • WTF??? this is the song when you have to collect the super Emeralds when you touch a Big ring in Sonic 3 & Knuckles !!!!

  • @antoniojonino Uhh. No it's not.

  • @anndronius O RLY?

    WATCH THIS: /watch?v=fgrlKabnMg8&feature=related

  • @antoniojonino Somebody's never played the whole game......

  • @Magekpin He's sort of right. Lava Reef Act 2 and Hidden Palace share the same theme, though it was featured in this act first.

  • Yeah....we're VGM enthusiasts.

  • Loved it... best sonic eva

  • Act 1= Hell

Act 2= The devil's crystal mine.

  • Sonic 3 and Knuckles was such a great game.

  • 3 people got mashed in the end from Knuckles boulder

Thumbs up if this soundtrack made you feel the heat of the zone when you played it!

  • @HyperDarkness91 Bitch please, I always played as Knuckles

  • @Peashant2142 I Like Knuckles, he's one of my best characters to play in this game.

  • can somone please give me a note sheet for this?

  • @SultanaKidStudios Get Guitar Pro, go to vgmusic.com, and search in Sega Genesis music. Then import the midi in guitar pro and Voilá.

  • man ashame it would have been an epic stage if it wasnt cut in that sonic 2 beta. but im glad t know it exsist in sonic and knuckles with a epic track to go with it.

  • This is for sure the best track of any Sonic game, it's so fucking amazing, touchs my soul all the time :D

  • This level...reminds me of Minecraft...

  • @BabyPaulaPolestar Fuck you

  • @saikouxs100 Was it really necessary to say that? There's nothing wrong with Minecraft...

  • Wow! IF these were the games we played as kids, what the hell are we playing now?

  • @Wiintendoh what are you trying to say?!

Are you saying that you dont like lava reef 2 zone not even the music

    respond soon

  • @Wiintendoh It's act 2... when the lava cools and it's mostly large crystaline structures...

  • @Pirochiro And?

  • Yes

  • I don't know why, but I think of Core Investigation PW when I hear this.

YES I know this came before.. I'm not an idiot..

  • Thumbs up if you think the Sonic 2 Hidden Palace Zone music should have been used for this Hidden Palace Zone instead of reusing this music.

  • I love how for a lava level it so peaceful. I actually enjoyed this more than Marble zone

  • the best sonic song and defo needs to be in sonic generations

  • i love the way the genesis sounds so much.

  • God, for a 16 bit game this had an immersive story and the levels were massive.

  • This all had to be the most climaxing part of the whole game...

Entering the hidden palace, fighting Knuckles, then Knuckles finding out Eggman (scratch that, Robotnik XP) tricked him all this time, going into the Sky Sanctuary, soaring off into the Death Egg for the final battle....

  • nothing like crystalized lava caves, the stage transitioning in sonic and knuckles made you feel progressive rather than a random new area

  • Perfect when your playing minecraft!

  • i love how they still incorporated the act 1 beat starting at 0:10

  • 0:14 Ackoo's sexy bedtime stories.

Lol for those of you with no idea what i'm talking abot, go look it up.

  • I LOVED vsing knuckles on this stage, he was so easy but yet it was so fun. I would purposely let him hit me a few times to make the fight more funner and real. :)

  • hardest level ever :0

  • hardest level ever :O

  • Lava Reef and hydrocity are the best zones in the series for music, definately! and Act 1 of Lava reef is better

  • Post après Cisla :ok:

    Oh wait...

  • sonic: alright knuckles give up! knuckles: if it isnt sonic! Ive been waiting for you! tails: (flipps off knuckles) knuckles: (homer simpsons voice) WHY YOU LITTLE! (breaking sounds) knuckles: wtf? (looks up) robonik: mwahahaha! I finally have it! knuckles: what are doing with my PS3!? robotnik: I need it to power my new deathegg! knuckles: well why dont you just use a power cell made of sonics rings!? sonic: HEY! robotnik: hmmmm NO! (runs off)
  • I love this song and I'm happy when I listen it. But it means that the end of the game is not so far too :(

  • @Cisla thats why we have the reset button!! :D

  • The BEST track of the game.

  • I liked Act 1 way better!:)

  • This was such an Ecco the Dolphin track. :P

  • @Pirochiro sega genesis game music... i miss that so much...

  • Slow jam remix...what's not to like???

  • Act 1 music can be found in several layers of this act 2 music. Too many instances to describe here in a youtube post. You must listen carefully! It really is genius!

  • I never noticed that the beginning of the song is in 6/8 but the rest of the song is in 4/4

  • @FinalBossPwner Tell me about it. This music was so intricate (other instances of 90's video game music like Banjo Kazooie, Chrono Cross, etc the list of epic games goes on)

  • thereis some thing misterious in that cave

a lot of crystals....... must be some thing hidden some plece...

  • anyone get a dbz vibe?

  • I thoght this song was for hidden palace zone

    not in sonic 2

  • 223 people were happy that they finally got to beat the snot out of Knuckles.

2 people were expecting him to put up a better fight.

  • i'd have to say.. best. zone. act. ever. <3 it's so enchanting ^^ with the cool colors, the colors changing in the whatchamightcallems.. perfect tune to go with it ^^

  • A good tune but not as good as the Sonic 2's Hidden Palace :)

  • E X T E N S I O N A V A I L A B L E

  • Beginning reminds me of Alien Soldier's soundtrack. Another great game from Mega Drive.

  • Man I love this level, it's just so epic racing to the final portion of this game while this magical tune plays. Old Sonic is the greatest.

  • Fucking majestic. My childhood encapsulated.

  • this fucking song really touchs my soul, love it <3

  • I didn't know there were people who thought the Genesis had a 'sound' problem. Until I found these creatures on the internet, I thought it was impossible to be that retarded.

  • @mentalrectangle it is true that the genesis sound card was inferior to the super nintendo, but when used right it can sound just as good.

  • @ignika98 The Genesis was pushed to its limit, it could easily sound as good as anything the SNES had to offer. I submit Streets of Rage, Dynamite Headdy and this game as evidence.

  • @printthelegends Phantasy Star IV has freakin' awesome music too.

  • I remember coming from that real harsh colored Lava Reef Act 1, and then this.. cool colored... awesomeness... it felt so good :P

  • one thing that set this sonic game apart from all the others was its level transistions it kinda put its self more ahead that the other 2 beacuse you knew how you got to that level and why.

  • 0_0 This was the level with that stupid robot thing as the boss...it took me FOREVER to beat it.

  • Those 2 people who disliked this song obviously NEVER beat Robotnik in this stage! LOL

  • Can't beat the Lava Reef IMO. Best level in Sonic IMO, both Act 1 & 2 have amazing music.

  • the story with no pages. the actors with no words. but you understood what was going on.

  • @treevsy The scripting of sprite movement / sprite animations during this level's cutscene told the story better than verbal dialog could, IMO.

  • @treevsy hehe.... Sonic really was like a comic book, but with no words, and in their place was the music that we hear that told the story.... it's amazing to have discovered the Death Egg, and you felt both a sense of maniacal terror yet sheer amazement, at discovering what Dr. Robotnik was really up to since Sonic 2.

  • @treevsy dear sir, that is why it's a classic. Less to work with than modern tech so they put more THOUGHT into it. This game will always be better than COD.

  • man I love this song...sounds so mysterious...my favorite in the game for sure

  • What made this stage awesome was the fact that you see the Death Egg buried within the rocks in the background. I never noticed it as a kid but when I look at it now I think "wow".

  • @inuyasha103190

orly? now i wanna go find it... but my mom hid it on me once as punishment for not doing my work and she doesn't remember where she hid it.. been some time now.. wish she thought it a little more through about where she was going to hide it..

  • @LadyTarasque Just download a genesis emulator and download the Sonic 3 and Knuckles rom.

  • @LadyTarasque the things pretty big, im sure it wont be that hard to find

  • @LadyTarasque lol r u sure she didnt sell it and told you she hid it so you wouldnt have a fit?

  • @inuyasha103190 And as it floats away, you realize even after exiting Lava Reach, things are heating up.

  • @inuyasha103190

climbing up in this stage and seeing the death egg still wow's me even to this day.

its a great way to build up suspense before you enter death egg.

  • @inuyasha103190 actually its like resting in the high up trees...........

  • @fartknocker97 How would trees be able to thrive in a volcano?

  • @inuyasha103190 well you seem to go to a cooler part of the volcano, in act 2, where nature just must be able to thrive. but the death egg flashes its eyes and sets everything on fire again making the volcano highly active. such a kewl storyline right? way to go sega!

  • @fartknocker97 But it's like Mystic Cave Zone, they sort of look like trees but in reality they're rock formations.

  • @inuyasha103190 come on man haven't you seen the long trees in the backround? I mean theres no way those can be rocks standing verticly one after another! look in the backround again and see :p

  • @fartknocker97 It looks like rock in the background of Mystic Cave, it's rock whats coming from the ceiling of the cave and over the years nature has been building it up over the years.

  • @Jami393 alright man all I can say at this point is ask your friends. thats what i did and they all think its trees as well. i hope they can speak the truth to you.

  • @inuyasha103190 You mean Death Star

  • @Bundyrumowns No, in Sonic it's called the Death Egg. It's obviously supposed to parody the Star Wars Death Star, but with egg instead because Dr. Robotnik is called Eggman in Japan.

  • @DarkShadow5415 Thanks, But I thought that was pretty obvious that I was messing around :O

  • @Bundyrumowns Oh sorry. It's hard to tell sometimes when reading text, at least for me it is.

  • This was my favorite level in Sonic & Knuckles, and my favorite music too.

  • This sounds like something out of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

  • 2 people never made it to Lava Reef Act 2.

  • For some reason this song reminds me of "Who's Crying Now" by Journey

  • If these tunes play in heaven, maybe dying won't be so bad after all.

  • How come the sonic songs in 2d games were so good... and the songs now are....so.....not as good.

  • when i first came to lava reef act 2 , i thought hmm this sounds familiar, isnt this the special stage selection music... then i thought, holy crap this is epic

  • This is also the hidden palace theme.

  • @sonic30129 Hidden Palace is Lava Reef act 4!

  • the boss was so goddamned difficult

  • @AEGBass Not with super/hyper! /stand on lava and rape without moving.

  • Such Genius Composers at Sega

Too bad they stopped making games and music like this :/

    Sega ftw

  • i love the ice and dam when knuckles threw that rock at me

    i got scared

  • I always thought a very sad- post child moslestation trial Michael Jackson composed these songs. Too many of these Sonic the Hedgehog songs sound like this.

  • Extension please!

  • @Ragnamune:

An extension was made in 2008.

  • @sonicKAI sry to have missed it.

  • @sonicKAI That's what she said.

  • @sonicKAI

    I loled.

  • Even though I played Sonic & Knuckles as a kid sorry I never did have Sonic 3 on an actual cart only the Sonic & Knuckles Lock-on game I did however get to play Knuckles in Sonic 2, I have however played Sonic 3 & Knuckles in it's entirety and it's one of My favorite Sonic games due to how long it is and I didn't even get to play it until the Sonic & Knuckles collection was brought home by My parents from Jack-in-the -box. But I did hear the real music after getting GNC Mega Collection *2bcont.*

  • *Continued* But after I've played it so much I prefer to relate this music to the Hidden Palace porition of the game (ok so in the actual game data it's Lava Reef act 4 but it really doesn't have any lava in it and who on earth could stand the feeling of being in a 4 act zone? It would feel too long) because I guess I just like the Hidden Palace part better. It's a nice treat for the fans who discovered the forgotten Sonic 2 version of the level, and I think it was nice to do an entire *2bcont.*

  • I think it was nice to do entire level that focused purely on the game's plot and it's even more impressive it was done silently. And it's nice to get back at Knuckles for all he did to you up to this point which is really even more satisfying if you've been playing the two games locked-on. Also while the fate of Sonic's 2's Hidden Palace is sad it's a bit bittersweet because I love S3&K Hidden Palace Zone as well and I like the Hidden Palace in this game carrying the level's title.

  • I like this music over act 1 actually.

  • I always thought this sounded like a track from Ecco the Dolphin. It just has that feel to it, the eery/mysterious/somber melody.

  • sonic 3 and knuckles was the best sonic game ever released imo

  • act 2's background rythm sounds like act 1's

  • This music sounds so mysterious ...

  • This sond always makes me soo sleepy...such a good song to daydream to...

  • I love how Act 2 sounds so different form act 1

  • I always thought the theme of this music was the game saying "Don't set off my alarm". Why I thought that was because the death egg is stuck in the ceiling, and the palette makes the place look like it's roamed with energy from the master emerald.

  • This boss is a triple-threat:

One: The floor has molten lava everywhere & crystal platforms to jump on. When the boss appears, this place will be moving like a conveyor belt towards Robotnik!

Two: He'll launch bombs to hurt you & make things hard for you to survive

Three: You can't hurt Robotnik, but he can hurt you! How to pass this? Avoid these obstacles and make sure those bombs hurt the fat man!

  • @Armalizilto Dare i say, Triple Trouble

  • @Calegaea754321

    Your dare is respectfully correct!

  • you're right, but if you get the fire power-up, this boss is quite easy. the hardest boss is metal sonic in knuckles mode, cuz it's always recharging on the great Emerald.

  • Both acts are awesome in there own way.

1st act; "Tails says the Death Egg crashed somewhere near an ancient underground temple irradiated with a strange energy stronger than that of the Chaos. This place is crazy, but there are badniks everywhere! They must have escaped from the Death Egg"...

2nd act: "I'm getting closer, I can feel this new energy... So intense... If egghead gets his hands on it, he could revive the Death Egg! I've gotta get- What the-? Knuckles?! What're you...? HOLY SH-!!"

  • Nope.

  • This boss was so goddamn hard

  • really?? it didnt seem that hard to me..

  • I love it, Sonic 4 Life!!!

  • This is my favorite Sonic stage EVER.

This music is my favorite out of all, and the level is so fun.

  • I prefer Lava Reef Zone 1 music more, but this one aint bad either...

  • best zone ever.

  • I prefer this one over act 1.

  • +1 for you. :D

  • when i was a kid and got to this level, my heart always beat like 100 miles an hour

  • Believe it or not: there's gonna be a game called Sonic 4 for Xbox, PS3, and Wii!

  • estilo unico me encantan los temas musicales de sonic!!!!

  • One of my favorite songs from the game! XD

  • Best music in the game aside from Sky Sanctuary

  • thank michael jackson for that, may he rest in peace

  • My favorite sth3 tune next to icecap zone. Thank you so much for posting this :)

  • I actually like this better than even flying battery for some reason. It's just... calm. Yeah, that's it :D

  • ....because the background is blue!

  • good song but act 1 was so much better! they should've made act 2's theme a close remix of act 1 like every other zone instead of a totally different tune.

  • It sounds different, but listen closely you'll see there's act 1 music on the base line.

  • yes this is true, act 1 tune is in there, but it's basically background music, more of a jingle, interesting remix though.

  • true. you gotta REALLY listen to the song in order to hear it.

  • @roguetrip99 it's because this isn't the same zone. it's hidden palace zone where you fight knuckles and he helps you

  • nope! this music plays in lava reff zone act 2, too!

  • remember though, back in they day they always made the music fit the stage so well... and it did...

  • What system is this for?

  • Genesis.
