My god this is AMAZING!!! Truly one of the greatest bands of all time! It really does just about move you to tears or goosebumps or whatever....I absolutely LOVE this album, several other songs on it are just as epic as this is. YESSSS!!! I love you guys forever!!
Incredible music.Progmastic. One of the greatest and imaginative bands ever. For me its Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd. True emotional melodic ecstasy and musicianship.
I have always regarded this as a masterpiece and the first time i heard it I just cried This is a wonderful , powerful performance from Yes , who are awesome and inspired musicians . Rick used a church organ on the album version , so it sounded even more ethereal but it still sounds beautiful . Yes are the most original band ever .
It is such a beatiful masterwork, saddly it doesn´t end completely in this video, the song ends as it started but with different lyrics, very beautiful.
none of the other keyboard players can come close to the effects that the original Wakeman has with all his banks of keyboards, the newer synth stuff just isn't the same
We need to abandon this "prog" niche.Yes was and has all along been amongst the great Groups of all Eras.Do not couch them into "prog"! When Hendrix asked Squire to be his bass player? He said No.The best NO that ever happened to our musical history.
For me this lineup IS YES. Loved them from the first time I heard them, and that was a LONG time ago (1970). This concert is indeed a masterpiece of musicianship from all of them. I'm glad they haven't lost that old magic! Oh the memories so long ago, so clear.
The stars aligned just right and brought the musical genius of Yes together for us all to enjoy. God bless them for having the courage to share it with the world. It must not be easy.
man I love Yes, jon anderson has to have THE most beautiful voice in prog rock, but I wonder (even considering this as one of their best live performance) why do they sound soooooooooooooo much better in studio than live...I mean, cause you have genesis for example, who sounds so magnifically tight in seconds out, but with yes I can t avoid feeling kind of disapointed...anyway: HOLY PERFORMANCE ahaha
Nature's good friends.Chords aligned with gothic vessels, movements in consort with bird song,It's The Trees! Even the insects have a place at the table of Yes.
I bought the album in 1977, the same year as I met my soulmate. We will have been married for 29 years next month. This album has many sad and happy memories for us and I still get a lump in my throat when I hear the soaring chords of Awaken. Classic Yes from the greatest prog rock band ever.
Agree 100% they are the masters of this genre... thanks for these posts a real pleasure to watch these vids... heres to another 40 years of aural pleasure.
When I was in Montreux, i went to the St Martin Church where Wakeman recorded those incredible pip organ tracks it was spirtual since the sun came through the stain glass windows. The area of Montreuax is amazing with the French alps across the lake. .
Yes proves that music can be emotional without anger, spiritual with preaching, beautiful, heart-opening, life-changing and powerful...if we'll only sit down, shut up, and give ourselves to the moment...
That is the first bit of Yes live I've come across where the recording levels were properly managed and so the sound is half decent. Probably 90% of Yes live performances that are available today are close to ruined by inexplicably bad sound engineering. What a tragedy. But at least this was done properly!
I taped this album off the radio when I was very young, copied it from cassette to reel to reel and finally broke down and bought the CD. Thank God for Yes.
I'm a grumpy, cynical 51 year old man, who hasn't shed a tear in years, yet here i am listening to this and tears are streaming down my face. Is it because of the memories of long gone friends from the seventies or the sheer beauty of this music, or maybe a mixture of both?
@LostInThePast123 it's a mixture of both - I'm a depressed, and sometimes cynical 53 year old woman who marvels at the artistry and musicality of this groups. I lay in bed at night and listen to at least one Yes composition before I go to sleep and it helps restore my soul.
@kerrysis I know exactly how you feel.. I am depressed and stuck in the past and I hate the world I am stuck inand I do not want to be part of this lousy sociwty which I do not reelate to at all but I do not have the financial means to truly isolate myself in a comfortable way so I am MISERABLE
@LostInThePast123 like you.i'm forever in the 70's,lost friends and all that, what beautiful music we hear, forever in our minds, and i'm a grumpy 54 year old grandad.so,i'm told
Be still my beating heart. I think i just saw God! No it was Rick Wakeman and he is just the vessel that was used. Still one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
I first saw this performed at the old Capital Center in Landover, MD back around 1977. I was memorized then. Today it still sends chills up my spine, except today I fully understand the brilliance of it. I never tire of hearing this offering to the heavens.
Going for the One was my brother and mines most played LP during the late 70ies. Probably Crime of the Century came as good second and of course Roxy Musics "Viva" was with Genesis Live the most played live-LP. Fantastic tunes this one Awaken. A real masterpiece. I tried actually played it for my schoolfriends in college but they didn't understand it. Strange!
I saw YES on The Going For The One tour and have to say when they finished this song there wasn't a dry eye in the house. This is truly a powerful piece of music that connects with the spiritual in all of us. To me it is the soundtrack of ascension into heaven and into Christ's arms. Just overwhelming.
"This is truly a powerful piece of music that connects with the spiritual in all of us. To me it is the soundtrack of ascension into heaven and into Christ's arms. Just overwhelming."
Weird. I couldn't have said it better myself. This track touches so many people the same way. Amazing!

Love Yes-Love Squire, as one of my bass "teachers"
I bought this DVD a little over three years ago and I just cannot get tired of this song -and their performance. It pretty much resides full-time in my DVD player.
this performance is absolutely off the charts. when howe comes in around 5:15 is incredible. and then shortly after when all the band comes in together it is just magic. i just watched this for the i don't know how many time, and i just had shivers all over. there is something ethereal or angelic about this song. and howe on the steel guitar at the end is just awesome. wakeman is like a keyboard god. and white's concentration is uncanny as well during wakeman's solo.
They are so perfect. I do not know any other band which plays live that well. And is it not amazing how Jon anderson keeps his voice like that in that age?
ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT! Saw this tour in the new symphony hall in New Jersey. At the end of Awaken I had tears streaming down my cheeks. I looked around, sheepishly, to find 2 other guys in my row with the same reaction. I imagine it akin to touching the face of God! I'm with Kilmarley above!
I remember the first time I listened to this track on "Going for the One". It was one of those moments when you are aware that you have experienced perfection. I could have gone the rest of my life never having heard Awaken, or heard of it, but having had the experience, my life changed, and changed for the better.
Every time I hear it, I am reminded of the original experience, many years ago and many miles away, but it never gets old. This is music at its finest.
Awaken ~~~ YES! The earth-transcending music of this band is unsurpassed. Only some can equal its high artistic quality. Love John Anderson. Love this band.
@Kilmarley Hi Kilmarley - I'm really spooked to read your comment, because I've also always thought that this is what my passing will sound like. I hope for both of us that it is!
Wish people could hear the whole thing. Thanks for posting a good quality vid of the song. How about Sound Chaser live or to be over =P Show these people on the youtubes the awesome that is Yes.
I am not a Yes fan by any strength. Most progressive rock comes off to me as pompous. Yeah, you can play a million notes a second, but none of them are the notes anyone wants to here (so the joke goes).
So, that being said, for me to give this performance the highest praise possible really says something. What a beautiful, almost spiritually moving performance.
That final shot of Anderson, you can see it in his eyes: "We did it, at last".
Yes is not Progressive in the sense of trying to play everything fast and blow you away with their technique (although they are very capable). They are about the music, melody wonderful compostions in song. They are just awesome.
thats tru but 2 songs contradict that - close to the edge, the gates of delirium, those 2 songs are some of the most out of this world displays of musicianship ever dreampt in the entire history of prog rock
True, but the difference with Yes is that the muscianship isnt just a generic display of technical skills. Take Dream Theatre as an example. They are kind of a modern progressive band. Each member of the band is very technicaly skilled on their instrument but their music is generic and not very musical or catchy. They focus too much on just showcasing technical skills and speed. Yes on the other had is always very musical and creative even with their elaborate compositions and playing.
@stockjonebills Yes, their virtuosity is secondary to their brilliant compositional skills. Prog today is a bunch of fat licks, shred solos and crappy songs. YES were the height of music.
This is the best awaken version ever made, ever recorded, just educated ears are able to enjoy this kind of music, this is the expression of perfection at its finest, magical, spiritual, mystical, magnificent, no language has a word to describe this piece of Art, this music goes beyond this physical terrain
@MayaZlatogorka - That limit has been expanded in recent months ..... Arcade Fire now posts the Power Out + Rebellion(LIES) combo at up to 15 mins for one clip .... I think it is actually longer than that ....
I think it was Jon who said that Awaken has to be the the most complete song Yes has in their catalog, and I honestly couldn't agree more. I'm never going to get tired of hearing this song, or this band for that matter
makes me want to be in heaven badly

I am not a Yes fan by any strength. Most progressive rock comes off to me as pompous. Yeah, you can play a million notes a second, but none of them are the notes anyone wants to here (so the joke goes).
So, that being said, for me to give this performance the highest praise possible really says something. What a beautiful, almost spiritually moving performance.
That final shot of Anderson, you can see it in his eyes: "We did it, at last".
I'm so moved. Well done doesn't come close,.

Yes is not Progressive in the sense of trying to play everything fast and blow you away with their technique (although they are very capable). They are about the music, melody wonderful compostions in song. They are just awesome.

thats tru but 2 songs contradict that - close to the edge, the gates of delirium, those 2 songs are some of the most out of this world displays of musicianship ever dreampt in the entire history of prog rock
pinkfloydrule27 2 years ago
True, but the difference with Yes is that the muscianship isnt just a generic display of technical skills. Take Dream Theatre as an example. They are kind of a modern progressive band. Each member of the band is very technicaly skilled on their instrument but their music is generic and not very musical or catchy. They focus too much on just showcasing technical skills and speed. Yes on the other had is always very musical and creative even with their elaborate compositions and playing.

@stockjonebills Your Statement is true about Yes, is what definately Defines and makes the band Unique.
