  • @alikala Unfortunately not, this is for many reasons, cats are very rarely released into the wild. Our cats would not be candidates for release anyway, they are cross bred and/or inbred, we cannot trace their genetic history, they associate people with food and lack any real hunting skills, they would become nuisance animals and would not survive or be good to introduce their genetics to wild populations...

  • I understand the need for altered animals in captivity. i rescued a white Russian timber wolf (Katie) she was only three months old, some people we met through my space thought they wanted one for a pet.. i don't recommend this at all.. we only didn't spay her because we found a breeding program willing to take her off our hands at 2 years of age, we had her paper work which made it easier to locate a program. its a lot of work.It is rare that we got so lucky.

  • @Fahad1422 not trying to be rude but they only have so much space and over 100 animals. If they did allow it they would be paying a lot of money and might not even be able to take care of them all.

  • @Fahad1422 They are hardly evil. If you listened to their reasons for spaying and neutering the animals, it would make sense. Among the many reasons, they're often unsure of the cat's genetic history or unable to trace it. If 2 cats are in an enclosure together then they may be related (an unwanted birth would result in an inbred cub). Such poor genetic health would not help save the species at all. Not to mention the limited space they have there. Just let the experts look after the cats.

  • @emmettaddict17 Yes, because this isn't an invasive procedure, it is easier and quicker for us, plus less stressful for the animals to wake up in his enclosure rather than our hospital :)

  • @loveable699 Neutering Saber will give him a more pleasant life in captivity, plus we could do other tests etc...while he was sedated. Black leopards are not a rare species of cat they are just melanistic and we don't breed at BCR this would just had to the problem of big cats living in cages :(

  • @Vlaxitov Our cats are not eligible to be part of the species survival plan, neutering our cats gives us the opportunity to to a full check up at the same time and the neutering helps calm the cat down to give them a more pleasant life in captivity. Black leopards aren't a separate species of leopard, they're simply melanistic.

  • Yes, there's no such thing as a black panther they are always a black leopard or jaguar, people just call them panther sometimes. Panthera pardus is their scientific name which is where it comes from :)

  • So are all these animals from people who thought it would be cool to keep a tiger as a pet then realize it isn't so cool when it costs $125,000 a year to feed them. Or are some of them rejects from captive pairs or orphaned in the wild.

  • Many of our cats are former "pets", which like you said many people think it would be cool, or they can "train" big cats and make them more domesticated but this never works and they grow fast, eat, a lot, require specialist vet care and will kill you if they feel like it so they are abandoned. We have a few florida bobcats that were hit by cars etc... and unable to rehab for release to the wild and cougars that were orphaned by a hunter, plus fur farm rescues, retired performing cats etc... :)

  • It's a simple procedure, not as invasive as a "spaying" for example so very minimal chance of infection etc... Then the cat will wake up in familiar surroundings so less stress on the animal and the staff because we don't have to move him back again when awake!

  • ak78au, The main reason for neutering Sabre was to make him less aggressive, when he could smell female leopards at the sanctuary. Also it gave us the opportunity to give him a full check up, weigh him and then move him to e new enclosure. There is no breeding program in the world that breed big cats to be released back into the wild, the best form of action towards saving a species is to protect their habitat and the cats themselves.

  • hmm, actually not true. I know of at least one breeding program whose aim is to preserve the species and eventually release them in the wild. Do a search under tiger re-wilding.

    I think we should be breeding all endangered big cats with the aim of releasing them in the wild. Its better than risking losing them completely.

  • There might be a couple of programs that do breed cats with the intention of releasing them back into the wild. But the amount of time and effort it takes to do this is a big factor.

    We don't do any breeding at Big Cat Rescue, the less cats we see living in cages the better, I'm gonna check out the tiger re-wilding program, where is that based?

  • I know of the S. China project and they have produced one cub and it is hoped that his offspring MIGHT have a chance to go somewhere once they get enough land set aside in China.

    But this leopard is not in any accredited breeding program and is not a purebred species. So this is the right thing to do given the huge amount of unwanted big cats there are here in the US.

  • Poor sabre. I'm surprised you didn't at least take him indoors to do that.

  • Supersandor, the procedure is so quick and the cat wakes up very soon afterward, so moving them inside would just be more trauma and more time to have to keep them anesthetized. Sedation is the most dangerous part of big cat surgery, so we minimize it to protect the cats. He is much happier and healthier now that he isn't always thinking about female leopards he is never going to have.

  • Well, I have heard that they're really bad at regulating their body temperatures under anesthesia and quickly become hypothermic, but I was thinking more along the lines of doing it under more controlled conditions indoors to prevent for instance flies from landing on his exposed flesh and doing what flies do when they land on exposed flesh! One of the reasons I generally eat my food indoors. Couldn't you lead him indoors on a leash and sedate him inside? Or was he too aggressive for that?

Also on the website you can find the reasons why we alter the cats. If you can't find the answers let me know and I'll answer them on here for you.

  • Good question. Some of our videos are in a serious mood, and others not so much. Yes the procedure and the over all situation of the sanctuary is very serious. BUT if every video was made that way people wouldn't be as interested in them as they are.

  • We help out by letting people come to the sanctuary and we give money towards feline conservation. Dragging a cat to a school for some promotional show doesn't save the species, it would only stress out the cat.

  • arguable. it's human attitude that threatens feline species. we reject what we are afraid of. without weapons, these animals would eat us, and we don't like it. hunting and poaching are only cocky methods of showing we have some sort of sick control over the world, and while we may, it doesn't make it right. teaching kids that these animals are to be respected and preserved in the long run is well worth one curious cat that has a weird day traveling.

  • In teaching respect, we beleieve the children and adults can come to the cats home and see them. We don't see much respect in carting the animal around. It is really up to the local people of the cats to let them be. For instance, we can teach all we want in the US about lions, but if the local African kids don't want the lion around or value it, then it wont be around. Usually people bring animals around to make money and or to avoid showing their real living spaces.

  • Not sure what your point is. By simply letting these big cats live out in the wild and protecting their habitat is the best way to save them. People have and will support conservation without having to touch a cat, get their picture with them or own them. We post these videos and offer tours to help educate, but the cats always come first.

  • Why would it tick you off? This is an animal that cannot be returned to the wild and won't be used for breeding. With neutering he will be less aggressive which means he will be easier to take care of while in captivity. He will also face less aggravation as he won't have those urges to reproduce, meaning his captivity will be more bearable for him.

    If you want to be ticked at someone, try aiming it at the moron who thought it was a good idea to have a leopard as a pet.

  • Although you don't want to add to felines in captivity, why not use them for sperm samples, freeze, and add to genetic stock for places who need the genetic variety in zoos or places around the world who DO breed to help the survival of the species out there, or send them to places where they can breed in places who want them to breed.

    That would be much better than rescuing them, fixing them, then just caring for them until they die.

    I'm all for rescuing them from abuse or from places where they shouldn't be kept as pets, or from being abandoned, but you could at least do something rather than snipping away every potential chance for more genetic diversity.

    You could argue that the genes are somehow 'not needed', but they are, in some way, shape, or form.

  • Our cats are mostly from the over bred pet market. There are zoos breeding around the world and trying to keep the genes, and freeze them. These places wont call on a place like ours to help out as they know of the over population of what we have in captivity. The problem for any big cat is habitat to live on. Every cat you see in a breeding program is going to live its life in a cage and die in a cage. There is a surplus of many of them in zoos. Some fall through the cracks and end up with us.

  • iv Neutered 5 calves in one day...it took like 4 people to do this.........i got the job to hold the hind legs and if i let go, 3 guys were going to kick my ass...lol, but i got to see what was happening up close and personal...did you scrape...or did you just pull...pulling is less to no blood...see ya later

  • Just like Sabre the tiger, I refuse to watch it any longer. I know you guys do your best to offer your big cats better life conditions BUT... As a cat lover and owner myself I have an issue with neutering animals. Male humans have a certain tendancy to urinate on walls in town...what about neutering them? why not?

    Many male humans encounter difficulties to breed...what about neutering them, too? ;)

    All pets, except legitimate breeding stock should be neutered at the appropriate age. Un-neutered male cats have a much higher frequency of a variety of diseases, than neutered cats.

  • See "sex for pleasure" and "autoeroticism" in the Wikipedia entry on "non-human animal sexual behavior" to understand the true nature of the act being filmed. It is being performed for the convenience and sadistic pleasure of humans -- reflected in the choice of music and the captions in this video -- at the cost of reducing the quality of life of the animal.

  • OR..we could be trying to control the over population of non SSP exotic felines in the animal industry. And we could be providing a better quality of life for the leopard as he is not going to breed so it is much better being fixed, just like one does with a domestic cat. The procedure and our care is VERY serious, but when making a video we sometimes add a little fun to the animal world. Can't please them all :)

  • Animals suffer when the mating imperative kicks in and they are not allowed to mate. There is no way that it is safe to allow them to mate and then have an abundance of even more unwanted animals. And even if you do vasectomies then the females have false pregnancys and fixate on objects in the desire to raise the non existent young that their hormones are telling them to care for. Too much suffering all around. I see this comment is old but I think this is important to know.

  • I read all the comments you've made but I don't see the answer to my question - why do you neuter a cat that really has no chance of breeding anyway? Even if he got out of his cage, the chances he would find a compatible mate are very slim - is it simply to make them more docile?

  • Somewhat more docile. It is just also a healthier life for a cat that will live longer in captivity to be fixed. And at times when we have a fixed cat we can see if they can share a cage with another.

  • I think it is better for this cat being "neutered" in captivity, than being afflicted with his appetite and adverse effects.

  • Good question. There is no way to release these cats back into the wild. They were born in captivity and people raised, so for us to fly over to Asia look for open habitat (which is hard to find) and release this leopard would be a 100% death sentence for it..so we do what we can to keep it content with its cage.

  • A lot of people ask this..and we go into it in our Snow Leiopard Species spotlight. The felines we deal with are former pets or unwanted cats. THeir genes are not important in the survival of the species. The SSP plan help in accredited zoos are the only ones breeding for conservation. And at this time there still hasn't been a way to release big cats into the wild. So sanctuaries should not breed, as this would be only adding to the over population problem of cats in captivity. Thanks.

  • Thanks for your concerns, our DVM (who is very good) and our general manager (who also has a medical back ground from the military) both were there, and i doubt they would act in an unsterile environment, nor do anything risky for the cats health. The procedure has been done this way before and is a lot less stressful on the felines. Months later now, Saber is doing great in his new enclosure! We would never do anything to harm our felines.Thanks again for your concern.
