I really really like this car. But ive been reading some reports online about it being a car that brings along too many issues. Also 12mpg/18mpg hwy?!? Woahh! -_-
@badboybr09 Ya, if you drive it like a douchebag. My Jeep supposedly only gets the 15 city / 19 hwy which is false because I can average up to 22 mpg in the real world.
I'm getting one for my sixteenth birthday! I have no experience off-roading, but I'm sure I can learn how to use this car on trails and stuff... but yeah, it was this or a Saab 9-7 X, I think I made the right choice. I can't wait to drive it!
Thank you! This conclusion sums up perfectly the main argument in favour of the 4x4 market. It's a fantastic vehicle and truly capable in so many ways, but it's not a status symbol it's a tool! Don't buy one if you don't need it. Exactly. Thank you!
Simply awesome. My only big complaint is power, which isn't even THAT important in such an SUV. Hopefully they'll continue borrowing engines tuned and/or borrow powertrains from Jaguar. The new 385 hp 5.0L AJ V-8 would be quite interesting.
My other (smaller) complaint is that Land Rovers below the Range Rover don't have a similarly luxurious interior. Obviously it can't be identical, but compare the interiors of the LX/GX, GL/ML, etc, and it makes sense.
Wrong. The Element tries to look like traditional Land Rover styling. Too bad LR's aren't as reliable as a Honda! Of course LR's aren't boring like Hondas!!
Yes, it is a special car, and as for your comment about it not being a status symbol - well, ive never heard such rubbish!
Even though most people do not use the 4x4 abilities of the car, it is the fact that itis AWSOME offroad and CAN get you where most other cars can't that is so much part of its charm.
There are many superficial pretentders, and as for the X5 and ML - they are all brand and no substance. A typical German fate.
wow ! we have this car. we dont use it for country roads or anything. we use it as our normol car and its really nice. much better than our mercedes. its really smooth to drive in and if we ever go far distances its so nice to relax. and the tinned windows are fav. theirs nothing doughtful about this car. its got everything someones looking for.
i agree i probably wouldn't use it for offroading either. i don't think i would want a 55k car go get it scratched offroading. if i wanted an offroading SUV i'd get a jeep wrangler.
I know, this review is kind of ironic. Why would you buy this "for its intended use," when a Jeep Wrangler is much cheaper and just as competent? And why would you buy this if you will use it on the road most of the time? It rides poorly and gets poor gas mileage. There are far better car based SUVs for mainly on road driving, which get better gas mileage, and almost all (cars in existence) are more reliable, according to Consumer Reports. So why would you ever buy this car at all?
are you kidding? these new land rovers are some of the most reliable cars britain has ever produced (i know that doesnt sound great but theyre EXTREMELY reliable. remember theyre designed for offroading, they need to be extremely tough)
The only way I can make sense of what you are saying is that LR and Jag are the only internationally-sold mass produced cars in Britian. In America, you should know the Range Rover has consistently ranked as the lowest mass produced car for sale in raw reliability data from Consumer Reports, which is by far the most trusted source for automobile statistics in America. And the 09 score is the lowest of the lot, just like the years before it.(And off road cars can defin fall apart, and obv have)
You've got to take one off road to understand. And to compare it to a Wrangler is like comparing a Leather recliner to a wooden bar stool. The amazing thing about the LR3 is the fact that it can do everything off road, while still being luxurious. Thats one thing the wrangler could never do. It's also extremly reliable, not something you would expect from the land rover of the past.
Your simile is correct, but would you take a recliner into the woods or take a wooden stool deep out into the woods??
And I (and many others) could not disagree more about your view on the reliability. Land Rover as a brand in America has by far THE actual lowest reliability rating of any other car mfr. This is regardless of the surveying firm or the reviewer.
Thats my overall point, its a "recliner" that CAN go out into the woods. Having owned a Land Rover, I know their flaws and shortcomings. But if I had a choice, simply based off off-road ability, I would without doubt pick the Land Rover. You are correct about what "most people" think about Land rovers. However, I have found that my Disco is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, its never left me stranded. And consider this, 70% of EVERY land rover EVER made is still running today.
As we all know, statistics can be misleading. If in fact 70% of all LRs are still on the road today, I would have to say that it is because 90% of all Land Rovers sold (especially considering outside of the west) are utilitarian, basic Defenders which LR has perfected over the last 30 years by having no product revolution. What would be a more interesting statistic to me is what percent of Range Rovers are still on the road today.
I'm not sure what you have against Land Rovers, but there is no denying that they are the best off road vehicles stock. They also have one of the greatest stories to tell, and have the most devoted owner community. Thats all that matters to me.
You are absolutley right. No, a Land Rover is not at all a sensible choice. But, if it strikes a strong cord with you, then by all means go for it! Its just that for me, a car must be relatively reliable or I can't passionate about it, but if it makes you happy, then who am I to say anything? It is the same reason why people buy Italian supercars. They go like hell and make you laugh, even if they'll end their life in a fireball.
Company has recently been bought out by TATA of India. The car is definitely a statement of fashion, I would guess only 1% here in the UK actully get used fully for off road work. Our winters are mild too...snow is rare here.

This is the worst car ive ever seen on the roads and I mean that. It annoys me when ever I see one of these show its ugly face. I hated before I knew it was unsafe and very unreliable.
When this guy says the LR3 is not a status symbol, it shows his lack of knowledge. The LR3 is a major status symbol in almost every city in the USA. Most people DO NOT but these as heavy duty off road vehicles or work trucks. They are a nice alternitive to the more costly V8 HSE.
I drive our LR3 V8 SE every day and it is a joy to drive.
It gets only 14-15MPG on premium fuel which is costly but we do enjoy taking it off road a few times per month and it preforms very well. See of video of a cool rock climb we did last week. No complaints here! We love ours!

We use it for pretty extreme off-road. It's built for it and preforms very well. It takes us anywhere we want like no other vehicle we every owned.
So what you get a scratch or maybe the off chance you break something, it can all be fixed. We use it & enjoy it.
