simple logic, Apple tried to put all that speed in one single chip & that will result to increased wattage, increased wattage can produce more heat. With no sort of cooling, you could overheat your device. Apple should have just used the dual CPU to increase the speed but not the power consumption.

Clearly, the 3GS is a ripoff phone. Its a phone built just to sustain funds in this hard times with the economy. The really new successor to 3G is the dual CPU Iphone. Your all been screwed by Apple

What people say about overheating etc is true. It may not be a problem for the majority of 3Gs devices but hey it's there !! I bought my 3Gs 16gb yesterday and it gets hot all the time to the point that it is really unpleasant to properly hold it in your palm... my dad has said heating problems. i don't. i think its due to 3.0's power management. 3.0 on my original iphone decreases battery life, and does make it heat up more easily. on my 3gs i turn off 3g due to a bad signal at home (i get full bars on EDGE). it also saves battery power. i don't think its due totally to faulty battery but power mismanagement via the 3.0 software. hopefully 3.1 fixes said issues. it hopefully also fixes the icon problem, because its annoying.

heat is always the major problem with overclocking a regular pc and really the iPhone is just a mini pc and now with the new 3gs processor pounding away no wonder it gets hot. the poly lith.batt. life must also be adversely affected by heat.seriouly it would be a good idea to have some external heat disapating device. perhaps integrated with an external battery to make it attactive.once heat is under control the iPhone could most probably be taken full advantage of

j have the 3G and notice when I put it on a block of ice with ambient room temps of about 27c the phone runs much faster. there are lots ofmemory freeing apps but it's not possible to have a hardware temp app yet!

I don't have an phone but I know about computers, etc. The processor in that thing can run a desktop computer or a laptop. They are suppose to get hot but not overheat. I'm sure it will be a challenge for all phone manufacturers going forward to keep these devices cool in such compact cases. That said, I don't think a recall is in order at all. Maybe a different tempering is performed on certain cases by different manufacturers as all phones are not afflicted.
