I disagree, I doubt that the composer would have ever expected such an incredible rendition. Lanza - the greatest tenor!!! If you don't believe me, answer this question - who else could give such a performance? Noone I know of.
I've heard pop singers, opera singers and everybody in between perform this song but nobody does it better than Mario Lanza. His voice the power, range, beauty and control to sing this song the way the composer intended it to be sung.
Mario Lanza had just passed away when I was born. When I was old enough to understand . His songs and movies were still played frequently. His voice was outstanding.I believe he was from Philadelphia, PA. It's truly a shame he died young. Now that I'm a senior citizen myself it brings back wonderful memories of his great talent. Without youtube we'd never have access to such wondeful things.
After 40 years of hearing the greatest tenor voices its so clear Lanza was the best of the best voice wise even Pav said this and so did carraras. But Corelli is right up there.

I love this song, and to me as a woman of Mexican descent, it is my favorite version. Mario sings it with the proper passion and feelling. While the City of San Francisco gave Tony Bennett the key to the city, the city of Granada gave Mr. Augustin Lara a villa in the city! I have to listen to this at least three times in a row..
I mean, this word, WONDERFUL, made them twins, long time before our conversation.Their voices are both WONDERFUL.Their destiny, their age, their short lifes.Everything about them it's WONDERUL.It's a phantastic chance for us to have this two titans now, here, anytime...
Sorry, I'm no so good in English...but I'm shure you got the idea...
The only "Granada" I recall that approaches Lanza's version is Fritz Wunderlich's marvelous rendition in German -- Domingo, much as I love him, did not command the high tessitura sufficiently to make his version the best, though it is certainly worth a listen --
Nobody matches his interpretation of this song. In one of his movies he sings a song called ay ay ay. Placido Domingo sings it on one of the videos on youtube. Sure wish, someone would post Mario's ay ay ay, which has no equal.

@Kenshin22able I agree, and would include Franco Corelli's almost superhuman recording as well.

Resendiz (5 months ago) said,, "The only other tenor who comes close is Placido, but damn, Lanza blows this one out of the water LITERALLY!"
Resendiz, We share appreciation for the same two tenors!
I enjoy Mario Lanza and Placido Domingo.
Of those tenors who are world renoun and recorded, Mario Lanza and Placido Domingo are my favorites.
Have you viewed the video docomentary about Mario Lanza hosted and narrated, on camera by Placido Domingo who confessed his admiration for Mario?

My ears tell me that's a high C at the end! A flawless one too! Amazing...
GermanOperaSinger 4 years ago 15
You're right. There's another version from a movie he performed in where he takes it to a C#, equally effortless. His range was low A to high D.
