The law of averages dictates that there must be Passat drivers out there who don't tailgate...I've just not met any yet. If there's a Passat behind me, it won't be at a safe distance, it'll be a foot and a half from the back of my car.

Passat it's most favorite VW car as for company, that's why they made millions of them during last xx years. I think BMW's, Mercs, VW's and Audi's (i liked audi's in the early 80's) are all well made and mostly reliable but they just dont appeal to me in any way. I owned them all at some point or another with no problems and sold them with in 2 weeks. Ive owned Jags, Rollers, Range Rovers, SD1's, P5's and 6's, series land rovers, defenders etc and they all whent wrong but loved driving, owning them and even fixing them (apart from XJ rear wheel bearings). I do like a nice 928. Im a sucker for V8's too.
I drive a 99 Passat 2.8 30V V6 Syncro and think its a pretty decent car 0-60 takes just 7.7 and top speed of 148 mph had it for 2 years and it has been great I choose it over the audi as I perfered the blue lit dash only a small reason I know but I liked it lol the car also feels very well built and safe.
bullshit... its young drivers in any cars that are lunatics.. in my country young drivers go for old BMs like E36 they are the ones that cause most accidents. VW passat is a good car - pratical, economical, good build quality, reliable. (i am not a passat owner)

Young people (especially in England, are always put down - and despite their being a lot of stupid people - not everyone is like that. The London Riots aren't helping at the moment, since teenagers as young as 13 are being arrested for stealing...
Mm.. I don't know. I'd still say the guy who mentioned the BMWs was right. My mum drives a Beamer, but she drives it like such a maniac. I get embarassed to be in the car and have to hide my head in shame when I see the look of disgust on the faces of the other motorists when my mum drives in the middle of the road instead of keeping to the left. She does it all the time! And she also complains about the other drivers being on her side of the road even though she's taking up most of their side.
A Passat is so ordinary looking that I don't even notice them.

I am chopping my 3 series in soon for a defender. Its more interesting and it forces you to relax and take it easy when you drive.
Not like these BMWs et al which infuriate you because you always want to be going 20mph faster than the person in front of you.

I don't think I've encountered an idiot driving a VW Passat. I still believe they drive BMWs. I really hate those cars, especially the King Clot M3.
Sorry Hammond, but I think you and Clarkson are both wrong. Passats and Audis aren't too bad, BMWs are clot's cars and they always will be.
