The circumstances are known in details thanks german precious documentation and that is for all movies show it practically in the same way. fight of three man guard up in church take a two hours and they will be overruned after going out of amo nad german looses 14 dead and 21 injuries. 2 of this 3 parachutes made suicide to make sure they dont say names of their resistance helpers. Third of them take heavy injuries and later dead. Rest of parachutes (4 men) are covered in cryptof church and it take 5 more hours. This parachutes also fight and will be overruned after floding crypt. They also made suicide.

But they only make films about the part where the Yankees(finally, after days of bloodshed) come in and save the day. British(and Polish) paratroopers VS. German/Dutch SS panzer units = 8.000 out of 10.000 Brits killed. That's an 80% casualty rate!! I'm not pro-Nazi in any way, but that's what happened.

British Army was small and could not afford big losses so their engagements were careful and they used their artillery firepower to break the will of the German resistance before sending in Tommies to die. Plus, Germans would not dare even making a movie like that without a horrible backlash from the world. Germans are forever ever the villains considered by many as barbarians. We know it is wrong to think so but this is reality.

what is described in this movie actually occured in june 1942 in Prag (the overcoats the SS wear are probably not historical). The 7 men besieged in the church are free-cschezoslovakian SOE agents parachuted from UK for diffrerent purposes, amongst them , Jan Kubis & Josef Gabcik, who did kill Reynardt Heydrich some days before. And yes, they did resist 6 hours long against german SS and police troops, killing and woundig a number of them. None of these heroes was taken alive.
