@bufbarnaby First, your math is bad. The iPad is available for $499.00. Second, those who have seen this thing call it a rush job and a stop gap. No one who has seen this thing -- which Amazon themselves admits is designed to compete with the Nook color, not the iPad -- see's it as any real competition for the iPad. It seems the only people who really seem to like this thing and think it is any soft of competition for the iPad are Apple haters who will latch onto anything that isn't Apple.
But then I guess the 'anti apple' book reading nerds, the 'oh im so interlectual' vegan types, the stuck up their own book class ass hybrid driving piss drinkers will opt for the Kindle purely because it goes against the rest of the ipad society
is that is? well I use my ipad 2 every day but if I need to read a book I prefer to look at an actual book, maybe thats just me, but owning a nice hardback book is pretty 'nice'.
Also , didn't the people who bought the original kindle buy one because of it's crystal clear display and long battery life?.. now hold on but is the Fire not just another android media tablet?... the galaxy tab, the Xoom and the Playbook,.. where are they now? The thing is with apple you know what youre getting
@artwel123 What do you mean where are they now? The Samsung Galaxy Tab has done great. Samsung has outsold Apple. There have been more Android activations than there have iOS activations. Google easily jumped RIM and Apple in the few three years it has been out. Apple's money making mindset is going to be the end of the company in this poor economy.

People will buy the Kindle Fire because of it's affordability, not because it'll go against Apple. I would rather save $300 than get an iPad.

@gongbk But peopel bought the original kindle for it's clear screen which was ideal for reading right? so surely the Fire has no better screen for reading than an ipad of any other tablet? I'm sure the Fire will be the best selling android tablet and an Xmas killer but it will probably be a success because of Amazon and the Price, now if they could make one that doubles as a phone then thats ideal! :D
I like it how the tag line seems to be "it's half the price of the ipad", well it's also half the size!... im writing this before watching the vid, il pass judgement in 31 seconds
@artwel123 It's bigger than half the size of an ipad, and it's more like 40% of the price of an ipad. It is more portable than an ipad and it is meant for reading, so most books are around that size. Small tablets aren't a bad thing, it only is according to the apple mindset. Apple is overpriced anyways.
@KoolAidManOG It's partially meant for reading. I know the Kindle is better than the for reading Fire, but the Kindle is meant almost completely for reading. The Fire has some more functions added to it, that's why it runs Android. It's more like a Nook Color. 7" is more portable, it depends on what the person likes. Not everyone likes huge screens. There are so many alternatives for people to pick from anyways.
@MisterJimJim - I understand. I own both a Kindle and an iPad, and I wouldn't read books on the iPad, nor would I web browse or (obviously) watch video on the Kindle. If you can only pick one type of device then you have to ask what your main use is going to be.
Choice is good in any case. The iPad has better internal hardware and ecosystem but if your budget is limited or you just don't want a big 10" display, then the Fire is great. IMHO it is the best of the Android tablets so far.
@KoolAidManOG Actually, you have yet to use a Kindle Fire, so you wouldn't know :P... I think it is a closed version of Android though, so you'll be pretty limited to what you can do with it. Apple hardware is good because they purchase most of it from Samsung. The part I don't like about Apple is that they double the price for the same hardware. I do believe they have quality products though. I do not believe that the Fire is the "best" Andr. Tab because it lacks many things because of price.
whats the song?

For the price, I have both a kindle and just pre-ordered the Fire. This way hubby can watch something while I'm reading my book. Best of both worlds.

Apple just got a kick in the gonads.
Anyone who thinks this won`t impact iPad sales is kidding themselves.
Cheapest iPad=$550 with tax
Fire=$199 no tax and price will drop more because Amazon can afford to do so.

@bufbarnaby
not true. there is tax for some from Amazon.

@artwel123 It's an anti-reflective screen. Can use USB. Ans last for 8 hours. Sounds like a good deal for me. Just saying...

@MisterJimJim - If you intend on reading then a Kindle is much better than a Fire due to the e-ink screen. LCDs suck for reading books.
It is a good low cost alternative for video and web browsing even though it is only 7" instead of 10", but you get what you pay for.
