This story just shows you the barakaah of Allah: don't ever think that when you spend in Allah's cause that you're money/wealth is getting reduced. Rather, Allah will bless it for you and increase it for you. So insha'Allah, when Allah tells you to give zakaah (obligatory charity), then do it. And giving sadaqah (optional charity) is very good for you too.

I have heard this story before. It is a nice story but the only problem is it occured 600 years before the profit PBUH was in medina. I'm sorry my brothers but this is not a valid hadith
