If the PowerBook was dropped, it would get a scratch or two. If the MacBook Air was dropped, it would totally break. I actually did that. My MacBook Air was being slow to me, so I dropped the MacBook Air out a 2 story window onto concrete, and the screen fell off, and it would not turn on when plugged into a monitor. I dropped the PowerBook out the windows, the screen did not fall off, would still turn on, only minor scratches. PowerBook is better!

Macbook Air is not a computer that you'd use for complex photoshop editing. It's computer for students (who need something light, portable and something that starts quickly), and average users (facebook, youtube, music, movies).

@bxkid69 Actually, Supply and Demand influence prices on everything not what's under the hood. Have you seen the specs on classic cars? A Bugatti only has 130 HP but is worth millions. Any Mustang can smoke it but is worth a whole lot less.

The Mac Air is niche item like a Ferrari because only a limited amount of them are made and only serve specific needs. The mac doesn't have a optical drive, the Ferrari can only carry 2 people. Also the Ferrari sucks off road. the air is light.

This isn't the first time a PC manufacturer has made slim notebooks without their optical drive or other standard connectivity / features. IBM class PCs have done this many times over. If there is the perception for a niche market then companies will cater to it. Most people may not need or want a portable computer that lacks the means to run optical discs without resorting to an external drive, or limit you to a single USB port, or prevents you from installing PCMCIA expansion cards, etc.

powerbook G4 is the best "netbook" ever , there are 11" netbooks out there with intel atom at 1.6 and with not optical drive and limited connectivity . macbook air should have bean the same size of the 12" powerbook but as thin as it is , i would accept the lack of optical drive , but why would i buy a computer that is the same size of my macbook pro 13" but without all the goodies that the pro brings . nice video

I think it doesn't seem worth it to people is because of its size. it seems more like a stripped down macbook. in reality, it's an ultraportable with a large screen and a comfortable keyboard. when one compares it to other ultraportables, the air is quite inexpensive. there is a market for such laptops and it shows because the air is one of the reasons apple's market share rose again this 2nd quarter.
