I remember watching this as a kid, preferred this to the Adams Family. I also only recently found out Yvonne also played the character of Sephora in The Ten Commandments :)
Oh how I simply LOVED this hilarious episode!!! This was one of my favorite episodes along with the episode of Lily getting a job or the modeling episode where grand pa changed himself into a sexy blonde and Herman into a rich Texan to make Lily jealous at the fashion show and quit modeling. I think it was an acknowledgement of the women's lib movement that men didn't want women working and gaining independence but to stay home have babies, clean house, depend upon them and their silly whims!
In the vortex of the future of the cool tomorrow land We'll all wait there Play a gig there In that great non-union band Scooba doo And Scooba daba Life's a gas And life’s a grabba Hip is hip And groove is groovy Life's a wild Fellini movie When that hairy fist of silence Slugs us Bugs us Puts us down... Hmm, We'll all wing it We'll all sing it Guy Lombardo's back in town!

OMG--the words to Herman's poetry! TOO funny!! Thank you!
Jo Stafgord made a recording of this song. The first time I heard it I kept wondering to myself, "I've heard this song before, but where?" It took a little while for me to figure it out, ut finally it came to me.

i wonder whether there is anyone who prefers "the munsters today" to the original munsters series. even john schuck likely preferred the original, even if he wouldn't admit to it. if someone prefers "the munsters today", it's likely someone who has seen hardly any of the original series. i can't imagine what it would be like to see "the munsters today" without already being very familiar with the original series. nevertheless, john schuck was good in some other shows.
@ysbaddaden2003 hey, you're the same one who helped me out in regard to the mulled wine in the mel brooks video. i guess you're following me around on youtube. it would be a pretty big coincidence if you just came upon this video without trying to follow me around. lol
-------------- if someone refuses to watch tv shows and movies in black and white, s/he would likely make an exception for shows that s/he enjoyed back when the person was younger, back before color shows became so dominant.
while i watched some of the winter olympics being held in vancouver, it occurred to me that yvonne de carlo was born and partly raised in vancouver. i've been pretty close to vancouver. close, and yet not quite there.
Such a class act! What an amazing voice and actress. My younger brother still thinks she's playing the harp and he's over 40 now! I thought that too when I was a kid but realized later that wasn't the case. Either way it's one of the best episodes and displays of true talent from the wonderful cast. Yvonne was such a classy lady. There will never be another. She was such a gift. Rest in Peace, dear lady.
Yvonne was indeed so underrated as an actress and as an overall talent. she was an unfortunate byproduct of the archaic studio system of the '40's and '50's, which limited her ability to compete for top roles. That system was almost like indentured servitude for so many performers.
@hippiefreak66 I agree, but did you see the special where they talked about how unpleasant it was to do the show in those hot and heavy costumes? Al Lewis said he thought the show would eventually kill Fred Gwynne....the costume made him lose about 25 pounds whenever he wore it.
part 2 : Look away, look away, look away over Yandro, On Yandro's high hill, where them white doves are flyin' From bough to bough and a-matin' with their mates, So why not me with mine? For he's gone, oh he's gone away For to stay a little while, But he's comin' back if he goes ten thousand miles. I'll go build me a desrick on Yandro's high hill, Where the wild beasts won't bother me nor hear my sad cry ................ stay a little while, But he's comin' back if he goes ten thousand miles.
part 1 : I'm goin' away for to stay a little while, But I'm comin' back if I go ten thousand miles. Oh, who will tie your shoes ? And who will glove your hands? And who will kiss your ruby lips when I am gone? Oh, it's pappy'll tie my shoes, And mammy'll glove my hands, And you will kiss mg ruby lips when you come back! Oh, he's gone, he's gone away, For to stay a little while; But he's comin' back if he goes ten thousand miles.
Yvonne De Carlo was a moderately famous movie star of the 40s and 50s, mainly B movies. Reportedly, she was initially nervous about playing Lillian Munster because of the ugly makeup (and warned Beverly Owen/Pat Priest not to upstage her). Later, she appeared on the Vicki Lawrence talk show of the 1980s to reunite with Eddie Munster (this is on You Tube). Even in her late 60s, she was still glamorous, although slightly bitchy on that show. She says she dated Howard Hughes back in the day.
a few years back, the u.s. postal service issued stamps featuring the universal studios monsters ( including frankenstein's monster, dracula, wolfman, asf. ) i think they should do the same for the munsters, yet there's no reason to include the ugly one ( marylin ). by contrast, i don't think i'd want stamps featuring the addams family. the addams family simply didn't connect with me.
Be careful to assume just because her hands are moving does not mean shes playing. Listen closely to the notes and follow her hand work. She is not the one playing this piece. Most likely one of the harpist in LA area. Not every harpist gets their face in a show or movie.
Not much is known about this song -- It was written during the Civil War (listen to lyrics about the man/soldier going away) and, although popular at the time, its faded into obscurity since with apparently no recorded versions except, of course, for Lily's. Catchy tune, huh?
