Many sources state that bourbon must be aged for at least 2 years in new charred oak barrels. This is just one of many sources i found that support this:
The real question here is, who determines what IS or IS NOT bourbon? Is there a national bourbon board of directors?
@jcdarts The definitions are set forth in the regulations of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau of the US Government. Bourbon must be "stored" in new charred oak barrels but only "straight" bourbon must be aged for two years. Go to my blog recenteats dot blogspot dot com and search for "bourbon law" and you will find a post with all of the relevant citations.

Great information! Thanks I love to learn something new everyday!
As Alice said:

Sending my 'curiouser & curiouser' thoughts through the looking-glass.
