My fellow Atheist, please remember, that you are NOT wasting your time when you tell believers that they have no evidence, for their belief, in their imaginary nonexistent "God". Each time you tell them something, that causes them to think, contemplate, research or question their faith, even for just a moment, plants seeds that may sprout and flourish, the next time it is watered. After all their head's are already full of shit, so the fertilizer is there. Plant the seeds and just add water ~JAC
All good, but I will be continuing to immerse myself in literature in order to better understand the world that I live in (including the religious texts, as that is the best way to understand and de-construct them), whilst also experiencing its beauty first hand in my every day life. Good video aside from that minor bit at the end.
@imdannybloom It's seriously a waste of time to be reading religious texts when you are a realist atheist, they all boil down to the same non-sense, there is absolutely not a single thing you can learn from these books that are of any value that cannot be found other places tenfolds
@Davincidz I agree, but it doesn't say simply religious literature. It says literature. Also it's wise to learn as much as you can to further pull the books apart. It's an easy get out for the dogma ridden if you haven't done your homework, and simply regurgitating what others are saying about religious text without checking for yourself as they'll be working on their 'answers'. Best to know it inside out to really watch them squirm. And we do need to convince them, before they wipe us all out.
Ridiculous statement, of course its worthwhile to read religious texts, you can learn what people believe, holes in the scripture, and furthermore its a good exercise in learning about the history of human thinking, understanding and development. Take even something like The Iliad which is a religious text, would you actually say its a waste of time. Its only a waste of time if you're ignorant.
Atheism cannot do anything. Atheism is a non-belief. Perhaps Secular Humanism can clean up the mess. Or even some other philosophy that is based on reason and promoting human well-being, rather than a bronze age superstition that would condemn us for thought crime instead of promoting an all-encompassing code of moral conduct that everyone can live by. Religion is exclusionary, discriminatory, it hates science and loves ignorance. Yes, we'll certainly need luck to escape it's grasp.
@crosswayokc No, but it sure as hell helps make things better since it helps us embrace the reality we live in order to solve our day to day problems. Also, jesus christ did not get us into a mess, if he even existed, because his lovely father was murdering us en masse before him (You know, the part of the bible christians never read).....now the myth says he just burns us in hell forever.
Brilliant video! It's like a "poetic palindrome", though that's likely not the correct term and it's not a true palindrome. Either way who cares, excellent stuff!
Amazing vid, Dom0ne! You had me there for a second. Then you flipped the script, ran it back and BAM, one of the best videos I've seen on YT came into existence. Great job.
I loved the video.. but I feel like you took the idea from the "This is the truth" video.. Regardless I still loved it, and I was waiting eagerly for you to let out another video since you are one of my favorite subscriptions :) take care mate!
@spo666tty I agree, but it's also true that everything in general is a waste of time. I mean, the universe is playing one big trick on us in my opinion by programming us through evolution to tell us that life matters and that we really need food and sex and stuff.
I can't believe you would just delete my comment like that, Dom0ne. Just because you have someone dis-agreeing with you, you would censor them. For shame, I never thought you would be someone that can't even take mild criticism.
I believe in God, but I dont believe that everything thats been said in religion is true. For one evolution IS real no doubt about that but i do believe that God made evolution happen and made science itself. just my personnel belief and just because someone has a different belief doesnt mean theyre wrong or stupid. it just means they have a different way of thinking of the world. So people who think that religion is for the weak, well all i have to say is, it works for me so you can suck it. :D
@ShaxAMV That pessimism is why the religious hate us, although it's completely true. Morality doesn't exist, there is no right and wrong. Murdering people is no different than donating millions of dollars to charity.
For those of you who just thought "What? He's insane," you are the ones who have yet to grasp the concept.
But I view it more as existentialist than pessimistic/nihilistic. That concept is surprisingly liberating knowing that the only inexorable consequence is death, no matter how you live your life.
Not that I'd go around murdering people, but I like to form my own subjective morality. Rather than follow what someone tells me. So by that sense I'd value a person who donates millions to charity than a murderer, but that's just my opinion, not universal.
@utupoe111 Are you referring to the Hume is-ought problem? If you are, you could have put it less nihilistically. We are inclined (not compelled) to social cooperation and empathy as a species, we are a social species. If we weren't socially inclined we would have died out. Most people make the value judgement that the survival and flourishing of humanity is important to them - I concur, that's why I'm a humanist. Being good by Simon Blackburn is a good book on the topic of naturalist morality
People get the concept, i just don't think most people are wired that way. There's some pretty loose theories that helping people is wired into social animals like us genetically. That is why apes have family systems presumably, to aid the procreation of the line and family/personal survival. Perhaps as things get easier and people require less social aid from those around them to get by these sort of sociopathic tendencies will rise.
I don't know, I think living in the existance you have makes you feel special in terms of that existance. Certainly i think i'd rather be alive than not regardless of whether i make a difference or not.
I find thinking of life as worthless is odd (what value?), thats a game for a sociopath, i think life is worth something to the human species and that religion hijacked the ideal that life is special, when it was always special as an evolutionary construct, not as a religious one.
@mattshark100 It was never special. Religion formed the idea and claimed dominance over other species.
All life isn't special, just mine. That's why I can comfortably breathe and eat other life forms to perpetuate my existence. I don't hold any value to humans over other species either.
What makes humans more valuable to the universe than snow? Sure we have sentience, but snow can melt? Can we? Your values are your own, they are not objective.
@ShaxAMV "I don't hold any value to humans over other species either." I'm curious, if a child and a dog was drowning in front of you, and you could only save one, are you telling me you would be seriously split between saving the dog and the child? I think your natural inclination to your species would compel you towards the child, unless you are a sociopath. I agree that there is no objective morality, but that doesn't mean we can't have morality based on value judgements.
@strangestdude If I had to be completely honest, I'd let them both drown, I'm a lazy cunt.
But if I HAD to save one of them it would be the child, not because I think humans are more significant, just because it would probably be easier to carry and if it gets rich it might reward me for once saving it's life.
@ShaxAMV You're either a troll, or a sociopath. Either way, the science of good and evil by Michael Shermer, and being good by simon blackburn are good books to read.
@strangestdude Nope. Not troll, what I said was completely true, if that makes me a sociopath then so be it. But psychological labeling is just nominalism.
@ShaxAMV Honestly if that's how little you value members of your own species I'd advise you to see a psychiatrist, because there is something wrong with your psychology or neurology. The normative is empathy. Or you've brought into the post-modernist BS. Or you simply are trolling.
@strangestdude There's nothing wrong with it. It makes perfect sense to me within my own psyche. No such thing as normal. We go back to subjectivity here.
But I can assure you I am not trolling. I never chose to be born apart of this species. I don't think I have an obligation to empathize or love what I have not chosen. Your logic is fallible, why don't you love the religion, you were born in to? Or your nation, or race, or anything like that. What makes species special?
@ShaxAMV We are a social species, we are inclined to social cooperation and empathy. It's conducive to our survival as a species, as it is for many other species google; altruism evolution. I wasn't making a logical argument, I'm aware of the hume is-ought problem. Like I pointed out you don't lack reason, you lack empathy.
@strangestdude I don't even know half the things you're naming lol, "post-modernist" "hume-is-ought", I guess I gotta Google 'em.
Well I support individualism than the society. I do understand the individual can't survive without the society but it's also vice-versa. I don't really like humans, they can be very cruel, the stuff they get up to sometimes is quite grotesque. Not that I'm a tree hugger.
Yes you are right about subjectivity which is why we would never agree on relative value of things of this nature, i read your statement "we are not special" as an absolute. since many people think we are special then the absolute doesn't apply. You saying "we are not special" is potentially false, you saying "I think we are not special" is always true if that what you think. Also i believe the idea of humanity predates religion, religion is a manipulation of the idea, maybe.
@mattshark100 Logical fallacy. Saying we are not special is objective, because it doesn't propose a claim ergo does not require proof. Saying we are special is subjective, because it claims something with no proof.
I am saying we are objectively not special. Subjectively we may or may not be. But until we know the objective, like if a celestial being came down and told us, we would remain no more special than anything else.
@ShaxAMV Maybe, but life is rare, especially in this intelligent form. That's special. And as we progress scientifically we will find a way to cheat death, be it through genetic modification or bio-mechanics.
@GreenyFool What separates a living being from non-living beings then if there's no death? We've already established that human-beings, like other forms of life, merely act according to their impulses and don't really have a will, now take death out of the picture and this gives life absolutely no distinction. And just because it's rare, doesn't mean it's significant.
I believe that every form of value. morality and faith, included humanism is a religion of a since. For it is base on idealize contracts, we all truly don't know whether or not that human rights exist, we really even do not know that humanity should exist. My anthropology teacher said that there is no human that is truly human who is not religious. And Humanism for it is base on unprovable and undiesprovable contracts such as human rights is itself a religion.
It was in days past that we were scattered and alone. But now with the tools that science has given us through technology, we can rise from many and become one! The time has come my cousins! The time has come for us to rise as one and declare in a proud and booming voice that science shall no longer be subservient to religion! That rationality shall no longer be subservient to superstition! That reason shall no longer be subservient to faith! (3/24/12 A RALLY NOT TO BE FORGOT!) [Spread the Word]
Don't worry i've got it all figured out. I'm an atheist, but i see great profit and power wielded by religion, so i think i'm going to try and get a piece of what Mr John Hagee has going for him... big house, minions, wealth, air time on TV
you know, i love people, simple impressionable fools who would die for the opportunity to serve a 2000 year old book, at my will and discretion.
suck it humanists! I'm an atheist with aspirations, unshackled by morality, FREE
@Dom0nePhilosophy On a day when I come home from work to view some truly brilliant, funny, and thought provoking new videos from thunderf00t, billzybob, notinmyname2050, a plethora of creative juices flowing onto my screen, Dom0one, "This is Our Reality." is by far the finest of the fine, a grand jewel.
I have great optimism and hope for the future of rationality. I don't expect tribal views to disappear, but I do believe that religious fanatics are growing fewer and fewer. Partially because media like Youtube is educating people and partly because fanatics (through their actions) are turning moderate people against fanaticism and tribalism. Great video!
We're probably not even going to solve the over-population problem. I would say the pessimistic speech is more plausible.
Optimism is extremely dangerous at this point. We need to lower our expectations of what humanity can accomplish within a practical framework. In 1-2 centuries we will not have enough resources to emulate the explosive growth of the last hundred years.
That was very well executed. Brilliantly done. I DID wonder why some of the sentences broke the way they did, but I didn't see it coming until the point when you went into reverse :-)
The original perspective you painted is understandable, but indeed wrong. Some of these human tendencies are very real though, and I think part of the way forward is not just replacing them with rationality which might be too much for Human Nature to handle, but perhaps also, where possible [more]
@rozeboosje use rationality to redirect their effects from destructive to constructive. They may both be "irrational" per se, but hope is preferable to division and tribalism.
Wow dude! this was genius.

I'm an atheist with aspirations, unshackled by morality, FREE
the world is mine to take!

@utupoe111 so we can let all the God fearing lunatics free to bother the rest of us even more?
athan1214 2 months ago
We're probably not even going to solve the over-population problem. I would say the pessimistic speech is more plausible.
Optimism is extremely dangerous at this point. We need to lower our expectations of what humanity can accomplish within a practical framework. In 1-2 centuries we will not have enough resources to emulate the explosive growth of the last hundred years.

That was very well executed. Brilliantly done. I DID wonder why some of the sentences broke the way they did, but I didn't see it coming until the point when you went into reverse :-)
The original perspective you painted is understandable, but indeed wrong. Some of these human tendencies are very real though, and I think part of the way forward is not just replacing them with rationality which might be too much for Human Nature to handle, but perhaps also, where possible [more]
rozeboosje 2 months ago
@rozeboosje use rationality to redirect their effects from destructive to constructive. They may both be "irrational" per se, but hope is preferable to division and tribalism.
