Ads usually work with keyword placement, so if you have "Scientology" in the tags or titles it will display Scientology ads if they (Scientology advertisers) are targeting that keyword

The alien is hush-hush, they don't justify the forced abortions/child labor in the "Sea Org", "fair game" of critics, "disconnection", medical malpractice, false claims of super powers, etc, etc, You just get a bunch of vids of actors who are reading cue cards that say, "Wow, Scientology helps.", "Scientology made me great!", "I am a Scientologist!", "blah, blah, pu-pu, ca-ca, pi-pi, du-du, du-di, pu-pi, snu-snu!"
Scientology ads might not have anything to do with your channel, but it does have something to do with the videos that it is plastered next to. That is how the Google AdSense works. It just uses advertisements that have to do with the context of the page (or in this case videos) it is on, because if someone is watching a video about Scientology they will be more likely to actually click on the ad instead of just looking over it.
If your not having a go at them (which is recomended if you don't want to be monitored and harassed by them), then I will have a go at the human rights abusing CULT so we can have universal balance.
I believe that you should be able to choose the advertisements on your channel. Like you said, it might not be something that you stand for or agree with. So, if people are coming to your page to watch and listen to YOU, why should something be on here that has absolutely nothing to do with you??

The ad is not a personal attack. It is a simple alogrithm. If the string "scientology" is in the tags or title, the ad pops up. It is the same alogrithm used in google.
Giving people an option about who they want to advertise would be difficult to program, because there would be variables for each channel-a lot of programming hrs. So there would probably be a charge. So the question is this, do you want to pay for the freedom to reject them as they are paying for their freedom to advertise?

I agree with you, a partner should be able to have a say in which ads are shown next to their videos. Not just religiously speaking, I've seen some fishy advertisements that I can't believe Google would allow into the adsense program. There's a sort of social networking site that I go on, and one of the debates on there is about Scientology being advertised in this way. i think because youtube recently has seen a lot of anti scientology campaigns they've felt the need to counteract that by shoving it in peoples faces. i don't neccessarily agree with it but at the end of the day an ad is an ad and scientology is a business like any other. i do think that ads specific to channel content would be a good way to go tho
do me a favor myles...try this. change your tags and catagory. it seems youtube targets certain ads for certain types of videos. since the tags here say scientology it will show up on your vlogs. if you're tags said "funny comedy" an ad for toyota comedy channel --the marketing (ad placement) seems targeted the demographics. you're seeing this type of "smart" programmed advertising all over the net. if it sees certain metatags it picks certain commercials.
That won't work. I have no tags that should attract this scientology ad yet is all over my videos too. Google text ads work on key words but some of the flashy ones do not.

The ad is not a personal attack. It is a simple alogrithm. If the string "scientology" is in the tags or title, the ad pops up. It is the same alogrithm used in google.
Giving people an option about who they want to advertise would be difficult to program, because there would be variables for each channel-a lot of programming hrs. So there would probably be a charge. So the question is this, do you want to pay for the freedom to reject them as they are paying for their freedom to advertise?

If you search "Scientology" on YouTube since the infamous video of the once popular actor Tom Cruise, ranting away about saving lives at car accidents and SPs and out ethics and who can possibly understand what all else, you will see an EXPLOSION of anti-Scientology videos posted since that time.
So Scientology put together a little marketing plan. Redesign their website so that it was a huge lame infomertial and then slam YouTube with these ads.

You're right... Scientology IS a business... a business that uses religion as an excuse for its actions. And there's a rumour going around that the Scientology business is in affiliation with YouTube... but I think we may find out soon enough that that is true. Scientology is probably paying YouTube millions of dollars to not only advertise their false "religion", but also ban major critics who put up channels criticising the cult.

Not just religiously speaking, I've seen some fishy advertisements that I can't believe Google would allow into the adsense program. Of course, that's their decission, but when it comes to someones channel where they're trying to promote themselves or what not, the channelholder should have a say in this.

I think you should be able to choose what advertisement you want next to your video..agreeing with you basically on the whole thing. There's a sort of social networking site that I go on, and one of the debates on there is about Scientology being advertised in this way. Not many people agree with this method at all..it being advertised in general. Hope you get what I mean. Thanks dude for sharing

i think because youtube recently has seen a lot of anti scientology campaigns they've felt the need to counteract that by shoving it in peoples faces. i don't neccessarily agree with it but at the end of the day an ad is an ad and scientology is a business like any other. i do think that ads specific to channel content would be a good way to go tho

do me a favor myles...try this. change your tags and catagory. it seems youtube targets certain ads for certain types of videos. since the tags here say scientology it will show up on your vlogs. if you're tags said "funny comedy" an ad for toyota comedy channel --the marketing (ad placement) seems targeted the demographics. you're seeing this type of "smart" programmed advertising all over the net. if it sees certain metatags it picks certain commercials.

Youtube is a business which provides you with a forum for open discussion. It pays for this with Ad revenue. Scientology has a right to use its money to purchase Ad time. If we are to make the internet a true marketplace of ideas we must allow all views to be represented, even if some have to bought. When I did the test I was told I was a trouble maker. I corrected the spelling of words into UK English and corrected the grammar rather than answer the questions. I agree that there should be some kind of preferences where you could say -- hey, no religious ads, or no sexual ads, or even no to political ads...if you don't believe in something that these ads promote, then it shouldn't be put on your page to where you have to defend your stance on it. If there can be preferences on most anything else you do on YouTube, then I would think they could do something about this as well...there are tons of sponsors after all...

Although it's too ironic as you're asking scientology to stay away from your channel, not all of your viewers may be sure of what to 'believe' in, and now, that you rose this topic maybe they're just trying to 'win' the indetermined?

Anyways, I have been asking myself the question whether a youtube partner could interfere and reject certain adverts on his channel since I noticed these Scientology ads. Now that I know you can't, I really feel you should have the possibility when you're not feeling comfortable with the subject. Although I can't imagine how this should be implemented.
