  • I get the feeling that, visually, the creators of the 2002 adaptation of Treasure Island (Treasure Planet), might have taken an influence from the works of this series.

  • Could be. Both Matsumoto's Yamato and Arcadia have that "ocean ship in space" look. Emeraldas's ship has the strongest "sailing ship" design. Also, there's the 1985 anime Odin. But, they aren't alone. In other media, Reeves' "Shattered World" novel (1984) and Kessel's "Meridian" comic book (2000-2004) also embraced the trope.

Personally, I'm a sucker for sailing ships, Harlock to Horatio Hornblower.

  • Coincidentally, I just rewatched the two (lesser) Capt. Blood sequels this past weekend ("Fortunes of Capt Blood" and "Captain Pirate", both with Louis Hayward, not Flynn.) They were on TCM and I couldn't pass them up! I love pirate movies! I have Flynn's Capt Blood and Sea Hawk on my DVD shelf.

I should also mention O'Brian's Aubrey novels, right next to the Hornblowers on my bookshelf.

  • Thanks a ton for reviewing this. I've watched both the old and new Captain Harlock series, as well as Maetel Legend and GE999, loved them all, but apparently I never came upon this.

Will definitely be looking out for this on DVD, given I can find it

  • Oh yeah I have the same thing but with VHS and instead of DVD's it converts the VHS into delicious cake and chocolate milk.

  • a laser disk that dead tec i like a betamax and hd dvd. do you have a blu ray player

  • Dude are you aware that you put in a lazer disk and took out a DVD? Are you magic?

  • I've never ventured into watching any of the Harlock canon because I thought you would have to watch the series in order to understand any of it. Glad to know that it's more stand alone. I'll definitely check it out.

  • Matsumoto Leiji=God

Awesome review Jiisan!!! I actually recently downloaded the TV series of Captain Harlock (and currently getting the TV series of GE999) and hope to get around to watching it soon.

  • Wow GrumpyJiisan lots of people want to be just like you. You should go to schools on career day.

  • actually, nvm, you already have reviewed some current new anime! haha. keep up the work good sir!

  • GrumpyJiisan, you are a true anime hero. Please continue to shower us with your wisdom so we too can grow up to make manly anime reviews like yourself. Think you can do a review of any of the new current animes that are out?

  • Could this guy be any more awesome?

  • Good review. Personally, I am not a big fan of Rintaro. He kind of spoiled 2 animes for me which I give a 1 out of 5, Reign: The Conquerer and X The Movie. I recommend you stay away from those anime that I mentioned.

  • I hope my graphic didn't confuse people. RinTaro directed the Harlock TV series, Galaxy Express 999 TV, and more recently Herlock: Endless Odyssey. But Arcadia was directed by Tomoharu Katsumata.

As for RinTaro, his work with Otomo on Metropolis is excellent, and I'm partial to his older stuff such as Dagger of Kamui and his Manie Manie (Labyrinth Tales) segment, but he's turned out some real stinkers, too.

  • I have to totally agree with you there, gramps. Personally, even Reign and X were noteworthy in their own ways in terms of uniqueness at least. While X the Movie was very obtuse and confusing by turning a lengthy manga story into a very short movie, it was visually very engaging and as a movie it clicked on a lot of levels. Storywise unfortunately, it didn't though. But I have to agree that Rintaro has a laundrylist of great projects he's been with.

  • Manliest review on the internet

  • Seconded

  • This is me in 40 years. Or at least I hope so.

  • When I'm your age, I hope to be just as GAR and review awesome anime from the mountains.

  • I want to be like you when I grow up.
