  • Such a beautiful French voice for a Belgian. Un gran tragedy that she took her life in the face of bigotry. She will sing no more for us, but will be remembered. Sant Marie please watch over this good Catholic woman who dared to be differerent.

  • on dirait la musique de Goldorak

  • This is hardcore!

  • The accompaniment isn't any good even if it had matched the purity of the song. It's mechanical and cold. I don't think she could afford a real band at this point.

  • it's a very sad story from her. Nice version by the way.

  • Calling it "disco" guaranteed its failure; totally passe in 1982. This is more, ehh, light-techno, for lack of a better term, than disco; a little like "Safety Dance". It must suck paying tax on $ you never made; a friend of mine paid $75000 on options for stocks that were worthless; not good. Hers is a sad story, but if you told a story of a bipolar, drunk lesbian singing nun, most people would still laugh. A good thing for her the screenwriters for "Airplane" didn't know about this.

  • The 'disco' music doesn't even go with the song.

  • @Aspergianstar20O9 Its not supposed to. Its an intentional counter point. Good or bad.

  • Where's the disco, then??

  • shame on belgian nation, that they force her to do disco version before she commited suicide, fucking 63 000 USD , damn, damn damn

  • started out a holy nun- died dressed in this manner as a laywoman. how pitiful

  • This version flopped.

  • I think the Disco Version is even better than the original, and I just loved that one.

  • @demorineau Yes, think too

  • It was a massive hit in the 90's i mean a Big Ravers song

  • RIP Swettie

  • super lied

  • I can't believe this disco version has more views than the original.

    No wonder she killed herself.

  • @JohnRinNoHo :(

  • @JohnRinNoHo thats sick, suicide isnt funny

  • bella!!

  • I can't believe I've heard something worse than the original "Dominique." AMAZING. The disco version of the song that Billboard would have us believe outsold "Louie Louie."

  • I watched this video. I listened to the sound track. I cried. It is a beautiful, uplifting song. God bless her. David Barneveld.

  • Dominique, nique nique quite a lady's man they say. You tumble in the hay, with a secretary, aide, a journalist or maid, always eager to get laid. You've been screwing third world countries now you're screwing third world maids. It would really be ironic if you came down with the AIDS. Dominique, nique nique quite a lady's man they say. You"ve tumbled in the hay, with a secretary, aide, a journalist and maid, now the piper must be paid.
  • @monthlyreview1 Not right.

  • Prémonitoire la soeur!!!!! excellent!!!!

  • DSKKK BIEN OU BIENNNN ?

  • Those who wronged her, can they live with their conscience? what we sow is what we reap.R.I.P Sister Soeur Sourire.

  • I was in high school when this song came our, t'was very popular, may her soul rests in Peace. Dear Lord please bless her soul.

  • A lame song----made even lamer!!

  • Very sad to watch this..poor woman, hope she found peace.

  • This is very sad. I read a self-published bio of the life of Soeur Sourire, and it was very sad. She was an untreated bipolar with huge emotional swings, an eating disorder and alcoholism, and killed herself in a suicide pact with her female lover. This must have been a vain attempt to recoup some of the lost (or stolen) royalties from the original, snapped up by Philips and the order she was in.

  • What's with the boots?

  • I think this is a beautiful video, the disco works

  • She committed suicide with her lesbian girlfriend. Gee...what a surprise.... she was a a nun AND a lesbian. Imagine that. A lesbian nun has to as rare as a homosexual pedophile Catholic priest...or rain in Seattle...or hamburgers at McDonald's.

  • HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • rip sweet soeur

  • She re-maked the older version of "dominique", because she had to pay taxes for the money she never got, because of her vow of poverty (The money she earned for her song went to the monastery). The monastery and her record label kept silent, so that she couldn't prove that she haven't got any money.

But she couldn't make money with this new version. Neither with her filmed biography.

It's a tragedy that she and her partner committed suicide...

  • Is just me who think this is so funny? :P

  • Comment removed

  • Love it !

  • kinda donna summerish

  • I wonder if she really wanted to record it that way or if that was some producer's idea. I can't understand what she is singing, but I can tell she's not digging that arrangement. I can hear that in her voice.

  • @bluegrassbaby86

She recorded it once more because she needed money for the taxes she had to pay. Taxes for the money she never earned, because all the money went to the monastery :(

  • @Dinladwen According to the spanish version of the wikipedia "The tax office in the country, claimed then that should have won fortunes as a Nun and remained deaf to their protests. Then required the help of her former convent and house Philips. The sisters gave her what they thought would become her party but the house Philips, whose dividends were 95% of the total (the rest was for the monastery) did not want to help. Religious leaders were generous and helped her buy her housein Wavre, ...

  • @mtcic .... yes but with her own money the buy the house , thats how all religion do .....

  • ... always to stop denigrating the congregation and sign a document like that and did not owe anything, and she did"

So I would like that people stopped blaming the church.

  • @mtcic church do a lot of thinks not right , only for the benefits of the church only

  • Respond to this video...only for the benefits of the church

  • @Dinladwen the moastery have to pay the taxes , because they get the money not her , see how the church work

  • What a tragic life!

  • I think in the convent of Villers la Ville, close to where she lived

  • where is it recorded? awesome place

if u know let me know

  • @msosad----le jour de Vénus ---

  • I read that this song Elvis Presley off the charts in 1964. I can't figure out why!

Hate to burst anyone's bubble about this former nun but the reason this was her last performance because she and her girlfriend committed suicide together by taking sleeping tablets with alcohol. No kidding!

  • @JustForKhadijah

yeah but you should see the movie soeur sourire

    she had a tough life

  • jajajajajajajajjajajajajaja

  • if I had made that remix, I would have killed myself three years later too. (No but seriously its a very sad story)

    Merci.

  • u guys have problems... i really like this song for its lyrics but the disco version of 82 is kinda creepy

  • Thanks God i prefere ateism

  • @onio2010 llol! atheism=delusion.

  • Cool song... love when the church stops being so stuffy all the time, they might actually win some favours for a change.

  • elle s'est suicidée ce vendredi

  • HAHA I knew something was fishey she was not French she was Belgium. She was not French. Typical socialist Wallon. Hmm is lezzie, becomes nun, gets big head, gets booted out, has girl friend, starts girls school. sounds like priests and nuns arwe about the same. LOL! It is good she was lezzie because she was fekin' YOU-GLEE - that is ugly with capital "U".

  • @rev9volts You really are a squalid little pigfucker, aren't you?

  • Chic et sexy.

  • Dios mío, qué le pasó....

  • @Earthlinked Where did you hear that from ? And who are these people who are believing you ? THUMBS DOWN TO ALL OF YOU

  • @unclebillmusic it's true. it as a double suicide, sadly. she has a wikipedia page.

  • @rayrew - How's it going man? I very rarely look at wikipedia. I have a great long term memory. I believe they did a Lovers Leap - naked ! Thanks for the "Disco" version.

  • Her success affected her head. "Sister Smile" went rogue, became a feminist agitator and advocate for birth control among other things, then left the convent. Her musical career immediately stalled. She and her girlfriend opened a school for children but ran afoul of Belgian tax collectors. Drinking heavily by this time, she and her "partner" committed suicide in 1985.

  • Das Original ist besser

  • @57Tanja Both versions are bad:P

  • @joachimk93

Bist du der Spasti in deinem Video?

  • I did not know the history of what happened to her after the song was made. I was taught by Dominicans in grade school and it's a sad story.

  • @juneshopper Google "the singing nun wikipedia". It has most of the info, and yes it is sad.

  • @clintonearlwalker Wikipedia would be my last place to get any adequate information!

  • @MenechemShaul Actually, I don't think anyone was even talking to u. Wikipedia has always worked great for me with information that is more than adequate in most cases.

  • @clintonearlwalker First of all Can I not make a simple Comment?! Secondly when anyone can edit the articles, I would rather go on to a site that does not allow this and as a last result go to wikipedia!

  • I really cry when I read all the reactions .It is very emotional. Now, I know who she was. why the church did not help her? why ..??? i am so very sad . Soeur sourire had a very, very, wonderful nice voice , I like it so much . I play it everyday her music... a voice of an angel...

    we miss you ...

  • @lovemesweetifyschat The Church is not the True Church of God that we read about in Scripture, that is why they did not help!

  • From an editorial review of "The Singing Nun's Story"

As Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile) Jeannine Deckers harbored doubts about her religious career, believing the monastic life to be outdated and left the order in July 1966 . . . plagued by drug and alcohol addictions, depression and sexual confusion, Deckers begins a downward spiral that will end with her suicide on March 29, 1985 along with her friend of twenty-five years, Annie Pécher.

  • @undrwaterthing Its sad!

  • I love you sister smile ... rest in peace although i do not you but you are always in my heart...

  • c'est ou ces ruines ?

    what s the location ?

    in Belgium ?

  • Martina Navratilova in wellies,pretending to play a guitar,brilliant.

  • this video creeps me

  • One thing I do wonder is why she (or more likely whoever choreographed the video) had her appear with a guitar, when the recording is plainly devoid of any guitar, acoustic or otherwise. Surely it would be more appropriate for her to do some kind of dance à la Saturday Night Fever. Then again, I suppose that would have been inappropriate in a different sense . . .

  • @Earthlinked

Actually, if you do the calculations for the 1985 exchange rate from Belgian Francs to US Dollars, she was only awarded the equivalent of $19,000 in royalties, which was not enough to pay off her debts (which added up to $65,000, according to one source). I know it deflates the irony of the situation to know that the check she never saw wouldn't have altered her decision, but life does not always sort itself out so neatly.

  • it's a man/woman farmer thing

  • RIP Soeur Sourire. You brought the world joy with the beauty of your music.

For shame on the greedy Archdiocese and Vatican who received millions from her and didn't step in to help her when she needed it. She gave her life for many years to the Dominican Fichermont Convent and lived in poverty.

    We'll miss you.

    :)

  • @Earthlinked 300,000 dollars? Are you sure? There never was that much money due in the first place; she only ever had one hit. Royalites were paid, it was just that she was a nun and wasn't supposed to have private property and gave the money to her convent, without paying taxes. I have heard nothing about her suing anyone or being awarded anything; the royalties were paid, spent and long gone, but she still owed taxes on them. Or so I hear, but where did you get your information?

  • @tjodolF2 I AM POSITIVE. I was in the record business '74 - '85 and she not only got money from the sale of her records - she also got 3 cents for EVERY airplay of her songs - on EVERY radio station! (all songwriters do)

Who's on top? Jimmy Page/Robert Plant (so far) have gotten over $22 million EACH - for airplay royalties ALONE for "Stairway to Heaven" - and the airplay is STILL so great - they both STILL collect million dollar residual checks - every year at 3 cents - per 8 minute play!

  • @Earthlinked That much we agree on; the question is: When were the royalties paid, and where did it end up?

The way the story is usually told, the money was paid on time, and she passed it on to her convent without paying tax on it. The tax bill was indeed great. But by the time she'd left the convent and needed to make money for herself, sales and airplay were just about nil.

So where did this supposed 300,000 dollars come from? Were there unpaid back royalties, or what?

  • @tjodolF2 Sales may have been nil - but airplay is a quarterly residual check that NEVER stops - you get one ever 3 months if your song has been played on ANY radio station in teh world - and Dominique was MASSIVELY played!

All radio stations MUST keep a "playlist" of songs played - so the 3 cents per airplay residual will be paid. And a song played as much as "Dominique" could EASILY generate quarterly checks of $250,000 for YEARS - becasue EVERY radio station has an oldies playllist!!

  • Also - once she left the convent - she started getting the residual checks herself - but by that time they were about $1000 - $2500/quarter. I have heard that the record company held a few of the FIRST checks (EASILY $300,000) becasue of a mixup as to WHERE they were to go. Once she left - she asked for the money - and it was then given to her every quarter.

You would be surprised how quickly airplay royalties can mount up!!! Dominique was played on over 1500 stations! It adds up - quickly!

  • @Earthlinked One of the reasons "Stairway to Heaven" got so much airplay in the 1970's & 80's was since it was such a long song, the DJ could take a cigarette break or dash off to the bathroom.

  • @tjodolF2 You assume that royalties are paid once - they are NOT. Airplay royalties are paid ever 4 months (covering the last 4 months of airplay) FOREVER - Frank SInatra (actually his estate) still gets royalty check - 4 times a year!!!!!

  • @Earthlinked Stop it, silly boy. Stop it, stop it, stop it. This discussion has been over for a long time.

  • This lady had pure and simple faith

  • Rest in Peace Sister Smile!!!!

  • est ce que c est vraiment elle ?

  • Silly old shitweazel. Though I ain't a doctor - I think the liquid you refer to is to do with dreaming about blonde choirboys. The sneaze is a VatiKan-Approved orgasmic shudder.

  • very good song

  • haha so this is the song adults (50 and up) always sing when i meet them. hahaha

  • @DominiqueCeleste They are probably singing the original version, which doesn't have a disco beat.

  • I love the Singing Nun

  • R.I.P. Jeannine Deckers

  • this is crap the orginal is so better

  • Depression is a horrible thing. I know from experience. God bless this good woman!

  • Refined video and performance, sweet song.

  • He just sings about the Lord...

As a child in abusive foster care in 1964, this was my only link to hope. To this day I cannot help but be moved to tears when I hear it. Truly the voice of angels.

  • Y'all can yap about the Catholic church now but come on...there's such a sad story behind this woman. She commited suicide together with her girlfriend...this Dutch saying goes "never talk bad about the dead..".

  • des waar a obtimals video fia an horrorfuim , i deng so im heino-stil waars grod grechd. s arrangement aa woiddan baerri, der synthesizer is da schdaergsde!!

  • Muito obrigado Cleber Por me enviar preciosidade essa.

  • I SHOWED IT TO MY MATE CALLED DOMINIQUE

  • Oh, this is just so sad! The original was delicate and lovely, but this is ruined by a mechanical accompaniment and a lifeless interpretation. I think this was a desperate attempt to make some money, since she was facing tax evasion and jail. She and her partner committed suicide together. Just tragic.

  • loved the original, not so much this version. sounds disney

  • Filmed in the old abbaye of Villers la ville (Belgium)

    sad story of this woman

  • She's strumming a guitar, yet there is no guitar in the instrumental accompaniment.

How appropriate this is filmed in a ruined church. Seems like that's what happened to it after she recorded the original, it all just fell apart.

  • This is the disco version... In the original one, there is a guitar.

  • They're raping the classics! Blasphemy!

  • Sweet.

  • this disco version of a song that has become a classic in every sense of the word thanks for bringing it to music lovers on youtube

  • Tres agreablement surpris!!! Merci.

  • Yeah...I heard this song so many times sang to me,,,

  • Great song but I liked the harmony of the original in 1963 better. It is all great anyway no matter which version you listen to.

  • this beat is sick. did marc moulin really work on it? i loved his placebo stuff.

  • Great song brought back to life in 1982 by Marc Moulin (Telex) . He passed away last year...

@ dokterlars : The video was made I think at the ruines of the abby of Villers la Ville

  • Yes thanks! Seems you're right! Would be nice to visit this marvelous place at some point...

  • Super he !

  • the Vatican was not a devoted fan of hers in later years....

  • yweah but who cares about the Vatican? Full of old men who wet themselves every time they sneeze

  • @shitweazel I'm quite sure, that, if there's a god, he's pissing on the pope and his "church"!!! ...

  • @shitweazel I do.

  • Does anybody know where this video has been shot? It's not the Fichermont convent afaik...

  • Where's Ringo?

  • Never in a music video have i seen such mimicing of playing a guitar! LOL

  • Amajor motion picture should be made by an academy award winning actress like Hilary Swank ,she would play the role so perfect .Yes shame she went into debt on the end of her final days. She was called like so many others having a number 1 hit wonder in the one hundred american charts and then pufff ,you disappear into oblivion like Mary MacGregor's one hit huge wonder also of the 70's,sad.

  • Love it!! As an original disco queen along with a song I love, I am in Heaven. Thanks!!

  • The electronic version from the 1990's is even more awesome; it use to be here on Youtube. I don't know why it disappeared. Does anyone have it?
