Thank you! I had somehow created a bizarre whirlpool in some water outside my home and now I understand how to fix it (build up solid blocks underneath the water until it is 1 block deep).
@arcade90909 Lava is the same thing except it only flows 3 blocks away from it's source, and it can't be duplicated, you can't make infinite lava source blocks.
I have been frustrated with people, especially those who make ships or pools, without first considering the "Under-toe" effect. that is why i always try to correct people and teach them. However, they respond only in confusion or disinterest. Perhaps i am a perfectionist, but there is nothing more more angering then trying to swim up for air, and dying from the under-toe (also, it looks ugly!)
wen u were talkin about the blocks that can control water u didnt say pistons?Im Guessin this was b4 the update?? GREAT VID BTW! THANX I LEARND ALOT!! this will help me alot!!!
@RazorWolff You do understand that this was made in the time of the 1.6_x versions, when pistons where a half-cooked mod, and not a part of the game... right?
Wow, and I thought I knew stuff about water, seems there is a lot more to it. ^^
Also, if you want to "breathe" underwater, you can use a bucket to remove a water block temporarily in front of your face, giving you a split second air pocket for you to catch your breath. Then you can empty your bucket into another water block and repeat this process as many times as you want.
around 15:35, are there any other requirements for the soil to stay watered? mine keeps turning dry unless i plant the wheat immediantly and then it has to turn watered, and if i walk over is sometimes it uproots, and turns unwatered again
Ice constantly forms in snow biomes with a clear shot to the sky. This could prove useful for item transportation systems. It would be slightly tedious.
Also you can "switch" dungeon spawners on/off by placing a glass ceiling over it and using water to cover the ceiling. Mobs will spawn while the water is on top of the glass, but will not when it's removed. This, of course, will work when the light source above the glass is sufficient (above level 7 I believe) to deactivate the spawner block.
Very informative video on water and its properties. Despite playing MC since Sep10, even a couple of these tidbits were "news" to me, so this seems very exhaustive. ;2)
Something I just learned, but noticed you didn't mention... If a source block is above the ground (meaning a stream of water is flowing down) and you place sand/gravel above the source block so it falls through, it does not destroy the source block. However, if you place sand/gravel IN the source block, but it still falls down, the source block will be destroyed.
nice tutorial. i learned some interesting things, about 2 to be exact. the ice on the bottom of an item transporter thing makes them go faster. do you know about those marble tracks u set up and race marbels? it would be fun to make something like that with water slides with ice on bottom for speed, colored wool and cool drops using ladders and signs
@FearGrump they were some time between 1.6 and 1.6.6. then notch decided they were too slow and increased the speed a little. they arent as fast as before. there is a way to make them as fast with signs and stuff. i believe Rolf David has a tutorial. or he at least mentions it and has a link.
I wish they would add finite water to minecraft because it would make much more sense to me. Then again, that would probably destroy basically all of your cool inventions :(
One thing you should have mentioned: Water flowing sidewards will make torches, mushrooms, etc. pop out of the ground, but water flowing downwards will destroy them.
Very informative. I had seen the TNT in water before, but never knew/understood the consequences of it being there. Thanks Etho. You've made it easy to understand! :)
You can actually grow wheat without water or bonemeal. I've seen someone grow wheat in the Nether, where there is no water, and without bonemeal. It just takes a VERY long time.
Yeah I just skimmed through before cause I already figured out all the things he went over. He didn't mention that furnaces can be used to update water blocks (for traps) however
I forgot to mention, it also doesn't need a downward stream either. Any water movement in that direction can cause entities to get trapped in the stream.
Well it fucked my hostile mob sorter big time. A crucial portion of it no longer works because entities can't hop out of the water stream anymore. And working around it is near impossible since that portion of the system is what allows me to keep skeletons from shooting me (meaning idle safe) and allows me to have a fully automatic record system as well. If I work around it, it won't be idle safe anymore >:(
@BestWT1 Lava is water that can burn things, will burn items, goes slower, gives you drowning damege as soon as you go in, burns you and is found low in the ground.
I don't think anything but players see through glass. Mobs trying to attack the player can poorly try to follow the player through glass however do not try to attack htrough it.
Just a quick amendment to this video though: water will freeze in snowy biomes whether it snows or not - but I'm of the impression that it freezes quicker (or each block has a higher chance of freezing) if it's snowing, though I haven't tested this.
