omg, SIA dumped their A340-300s for the 777s years ago, now they only have 5 A345.. That's because this A345 can fly SIN-EWR/LAX non stop or else SIA would dump all,,
Dumb uncomfortable aircraft. The gap between the window seats and the actual wall is 60cm--I checked. The touchscreen NEVER works and the seats are to small. I'm glad they brought back their 747's although only for flights to west Africa. At least someone will be comfortable. Thats why I have a Qantas frequent Flyer card not SAA I prefer the 747 over the A340 any-day.
You confuse the technology with comfort... The comfort is depends on the customer not a type of airplane. I saw a B747 which was less than the space on your feet...
@Gabler21 Couldn't agree more, there are some ignorant people who don't have a clue about that aircraft and think the seat pitch is set or the IFE is chosen by the aircraft manufacturer. Technologicalwise the A340-600 is more advanced then the 777 even it has worse economics(other way round at high and hot enviroment) due to four engines and higher weight. Apart the 787 all Boeing Products are technologicaly inferior.
nice Ad. the 340-200 are ex Lufthansa. i think they have 6 or so. not sure if they are leased or bought from Lufthansa. as far as i know SAA has one 744 leased out or available for leasing.
And now SAA is in a dispute with Airbus over A320's they don't want or can't afford. And they have a load of outdated A340's that nobody else wants because of the 4 engines. SAA's Airbus story is about as rosy as that French guys overly rosy characterization of the new South Africa.
Thanks SAA for coming back to Buenos Aires!! From April Johannesburg-Buenos Aires direct non stop gflogjht after 8 years of absence of direct flights!!
The best Airline Ad i've ever seen, terrific. Well done SAA. Hope they recover soon. Btw the A340-600 is no more the worlds most sophisticated and complex plane, now its the A380 and will remain for some decades.
This ad is quite old. SAA already had 20 brand spanking new b737-800s (738) when they decided to replace them. and as the new ceo came in he cancelled the orders for the A320 which SAA ordered to replace the 738. They still recieved all their other orders A319 A340-200/300/600's. And in the mid of last year they got rid of their 747-400's. Rumour has it, if they post good results in the 4th quater they may order somemore, or even A380's to replace 747-400
I flew from London-J'burg and J'burg-Lusaka return, and I found SAA was a fantastic airlein to travel with. The patterns of the plane wings and tail looks so good.
aggreed with both comments lol. Its very common to have your bags wrapped in this plastic warpping in SA. They only do it for a few Rand in Jo'burg airport

@PhilipDK5800 I've flown it on many times. Did you have a window seat? Read my comment above and then you'll get why I said so.
SouthAfricanAirways1 1 year ago
@SouthAfricanAirways1 I had a window seat onboard the 340-600
PhilipDK5800 1 year ago
@PhilipDK5800 So did I-twice. Once for a 13 hour flight to Hong Kong and a 12 hour flight from Perth. I just think the seats are too small, (17"")

Their fleet consits of Airbus A340 -200, 300, and 600 they also have Airbus A319-100 and B737-800. They do not operate 747 anymore

But it says in October's "Airliner World" that they have four 747's I think they are in storage or something...

they might have those on lease or are phasing them out. You can have a million Airbus planes on order, doesn't mean you are flying them.
