Good, but small nitpick - you need to substitute the phrase "M14 Type" for "M1A". As you know, M1A is but ONE specific commercial designation for what has actually been quite a few different makers/flavors (copies) of the M14-type rifle. Yes, yours is an "M1a soccom", but the differences you are demonstrating are common to all M14 types, not just m1a or more specifically, m1a soccom.
@Mr683465 Theres alot of truth to that statement, if you look around back around the time of the korean war, it was kinda clarified that we needed a more up to date type of standard issue rifle, so basically they took a standard M1 Garand, stripped it down a bit, added the ability to put external mags into it, and also gave it the ability to fire in full automatic, but that was taken out later during the vietnam war since it was too hard to control on full auto. Then came the M16 XD
@bf2lover42 Definitely that too, they had to carry more ammo which weighed everyone down and pretty much screwed you over in the long run, thanks for reminding me of that XD
There is a company called Shuffs Parkerizing located in MI that builds the Garand into a mag fed rifle. Shuff rebuilds and finsishes rifles and is real popular in the M1 Garand community.
He also takes worn out Garands and builds real cool short Garand called the Mini G. The rifle was featured in shooting mags.
The gas systems is a bit different. The M1 Garand is a long stroke gas piston. The M14 / M1A is a short stroke piston. Also one the main difference between these two firearms is the M1 Garand was produced with a hammer forged receiver and parts. Commercial spec M14 clones like the Springfield Armory & Fulton Armor M1A's, use weaker investment cast receivers and parts. They won't have the lifespan of military grade stuff. You can purchase a true hammer forged M1A's / M14's from SE & LRB Arms.
There are two scope mount Garand designs. The M1C and the M1D. the en-bloc clip is not a stripper clip as the whole clip is loaded, and left in the magazine. Stripper clips are removed after the rounds are loaded. Mosin Nagant, Mauser, Springfield 03, SKS, SMLE,are classic examples of stripper clip loaded rifles. The Mauser broom handle 9mm pistol loads with stripper clips. And of course, the M14.
@wcgold2 As many as you can afford. But the goal is at least 12 mags per firearm. If you can afford to buy 30+ or more mags, than even better. And also spare parts so you can rebuild them as needs - followers, springs, floor plates.
The M1c and M1d had scopes. The Springfield Armory got closed down because of the cost overruns in making the M14 and to get it adopted they said that its parts were interchangable with the M1.
If by better you actually mean shittier, then yes the Garand is much better than any AK, lol. Just kidding, why would anyone even compare an AK to a Garand? The AK is the much better rifle, Garand is for children.
@acidburn134 Nope. You couldn't even handle the weight and power of the m1 grand. .30-06 is full of win and has double the kinetic energy of 7.62x39. The weapon of 3rd world bottom feeders with children fighters, middle eastern derka-derkas, and commie dictators, & FPS Russia fanboys is the ak.
Maybe this has already been said, but I've heard that the Germans used to listen for the PING as a way to know when to charge. Kinda makes sense to me.
Only part true. If you had a small firefight with say a squad level engagement the German may be able to hear the enblock eject. During heavy battle there is no way to hear the enblock over the rifle fire. Even at the local shooting range with outer rifles firing you cannot hear the PING of the enblock.
I have been building and shooting the Garand in competion and for recreation for over 30 years.
@cbarsonfire Thanks for the clarification. I shot the Garand for the first time last month and one of the guys I was shooting with made that comment. Incidentally, I now understand why that rifle has such a following. .30-06 out of a semi-automatic rifle is a freaking rush.
I would recomend that anyone interested in the Garand grab one now. The supply is running out. While many hear about 800K Garands from S Korea they may end up being sold to others in Europe. There is a huge demand for surplus arms in other countries.
Another fun time is going to the CMP/NRA National Matches at Camp Perry Ohio. I go every year and two years ago 4 of us had lunch with Gunny R. Lee Ermey from the show Mail Call and Lock N. Load. What a cool guy to talk to.
i like both of thos rifles verry much but unless the ammo & parts for the guns become as affordable & accesible as the vruger 10/22 i bfrown that i will never buy 1 : (
@MrBfd0412 While I would agree that the .308 is a little over powered as a general purpose rifle round, the .30-06 is even more so. Actually, the .30-06 is not much more powerful than the .308, and is bigger and less accurate. That's why today they use the .308 as a machine gun/sniper round, and developed the 5.56.
Watch your video Miller, the table cover your using makes the bullet tips look curved. Amazing what the eyes can do, especially through aperture sites.
I have been curious about the differences and similarities between the M1 & Garland. I was going to find someyhing histrical to read on it. Thanks, now I can watch and learn.
The M1a has a bolt catch/release latch .. But the Garand does not... that button on the side is a clip latch to eject a enblock clip not a bolt release ..
Great vid! Nice toys you got there! You got Papa bear and Mama bear but where's baby bear (mini-14)? I'd love to see just a quick overview of all three :)
@GeorgeLRockwell87 Google: Tuskegee Airman, and be filled with pride. I'm a Red Tail myself (332 AEW in Balad, Iraq), and the heritage of the Red Tail is a great one.
@millerusaf Speaking of which, I've seen trailers for 'Red Tails" by Lucasfilm, came out on the 20th. Do you have plans to watch it/Have you watched it?
@Reynard13Fuchs Haven't seen it, but I want to badly. I want to see how true to the heritage the movie is. With George Lucas directing and a few actual Red Tails in on it, I bet the movie is awesome.
@millerusaf funny thing is i wnet in to the shop and picked up the m1 carbine and was like wow its a lot smaller than i thought it would be but felt good. then i looked to the right and picked up the garand and was like holy crap. the carbine had a really old scope on it just like you where talking about. was thinking of getting it though 439 for the carbine and 795 for the garand
What sort of accuracy are you able to get with that 16 inch m1a? Curious because i want one but want to make sure its worth the price tag.
