I hear you for the forced reading! I totally go back and re-read books from high school English now that there's no pressure to understand it on so many complicated levels. I just read it leisurely.
Your great ! I just subscribed. The book 1984 was great reading in the 60's and 70's, but really lost it's punch in the 80's and now I can't imagine reading it. I really enjoy you keep up the great videos I will watch the rest of your You Tube videos today.
since you like math: think of combined words like "chillax" as two quantities added together to equal a sum that is greater than the two parts :-p
and maybe the reason it's hard to get through 1984 is the combined words/Newspeak like "mini-true" (ministry of truth)...it's kinda eerie sometimes how close that novel mirrors events these days.
I agree about studying literature too much ruining the experience, but I hate to admit some of it sometimes actually helps you enjoy it more.
i liked both math and english, as well as latin and french, and physics, chemistry and biology, but i just could never get interested in history. now years later i'm taking an interest in history as i try to uncover the history of my own family ...
I hated math. But you're right. Books are so much more enjoyable when you can read them on your own time and not have to worry about what you'll be tested on.
You can just enjoy the book for what it is, without trying to remember every setting and name.
I have to say..side bar links are much better as they open the link in a new window while the annotation links take us away from this video to the page.
Also I agree with you.. math is my favorite (I plan to be an engineer) and I hate english :P I hate when I'm forced to read books, too. Every single one of them I dislike, since they were forced on me. I have to read 4 books over the summer (2 of them down already!) and I hate them despite 1 of them being kind of interesting.. just because they were forced. And I hate doing assignments on books! Tests are fine, don't make me write in the books though.. stupid teachers v_v
Yeah! My teachers take it further than that too.. not only do we have timed essays (summer assignment says we will) and tests.. we have to write inside of the book, put our thoughts, do character summaries, plot summaries on every page (and somehow remember to do every single thing, there's a lot more than I mentioned, whilst reading).. and relate it to some other assignment we have to do. It's crazy! It doesn't help me learn it just frustrates me v_v Oh well.. tis what I get for taking AP -_-
omg lol i just understood what chillax stands for: Chill + Relax..how did i miss that?!?

Oh wow, I love 1984! Such a good book, glad you're enjoying it. :DDD Fahrenheit 451 is similar but amazing as well if you haven't read that.

I have read that! I did enjoy that one, but not as much as 1984.

I text while people I don't like are talking in the hopes that they'll stop... Lol.

Your funny. And you make a very good point with english. I hate being forced to read a book I don't want to and then having to write about it.

OH, and I agree with you about the novel thing. I hate being forced to read them. Bleh.

I wasnt forced to read it, and it was actually good. Teachers really do ruin books.
chemicaljordan 3 years ago
Yeah maybe i could see it being enjoyable if i got to read it at my own pace and not have to do papers on it lol

yes, I agree with you here. Essays are the most horrible thing in my opinion. Why cant people stop forced learning and support learning environments?

1984 ! Yeah, books are a lot better when you don't HAVE to read them....
tydirium321 3 years ago
The ability to choose how much to read, when to read, and what to look for in the books is what makes reading great. No wonder nobody reads anymore!
chemicaljordan 3 years ago
That's exactly why I decided not to take any english courses next year in University. (I just finished choosing all my courses).
