no offense to anyone with this comment, but real lances were way bigger in thickness than those ones. Cool though that they're trying to recreate this spectacular event.
All the naysayers SHOULD try this at home, just so you can feel what riding a horse at 30 MPH is like while wearing 80 pounds of metal, and not being able to see where you're going while aiming for a guy's shoulder with a long, inch-thick pole. Then, in the ambulance, you can dribble about what ate your brain to try something so stupid. This is a sport only champions dare and try to survive. But please do, and put the video on YouTube. We all need the laugh.
@jmlinn11 i live next to a place full of horses kids ride them all the time they get freedom over doing just about whatever they want lol whats to stop them from getting some sticks? ;D
@FpSGamesFtW As if throwing a fucking ball (Hammer throw) down a field isn't? Or a long fucking jump? And please, lets not forget curling. Hell, a majority of the Olympic "sports" are fucking retarded. This would at least be interesting.
@ReiMonCoH Oh come on, this is an ancient sport and celebration of martial skill and horsemanship. There are centuries of tradition and culture behind jousting so it's certainly not "silly foolishness, pure and simple." BTW, was that said with a monocle and a top hat?
I'm actually perfectly okay with -mounted bullfighting- and I think that the full contact version of jousting is too dangerous. Pretty much -all- of the guys that take part (and you do need to be a big, powerful dude to do this at all), are really, really beat up. Not sure if there have been significant numbers of serious horse injuries - seems like a near certainty.
@reddupo That's like saying, I don't understand the skill in shooting a basketball... when you're riding a horse, and another guy is trying to hit you too, its hard to brace and put a full force behind the tip of a lance.
I've never gotten how jousting works. What decides who wins? Two guys are traveling in straight lines towards each other, so there is no dodging. Both of their pole things are the same length, so they hit each other at the same time. It doesn't seem like there is too much you can do to stay on the horse other than squeeze your legs together.
@reddupo: The idea is to break the head of your lance or unhorse your opponent. The winner is decided by adding up points. The skill is in the thrust and the aim.
Just a note. the guys could at least update their armor. we do have kevlar nowadays. it would be alot safer and you would be able to manouvre alot better too.
@fartsam08 Jousting has changed along the medieval period. In early feudal times they used shields especially around 1150-1200. But these armour here show that it's a late medieval jousting tournment (around 1350- 1500) I also saw a barbute in Maximilian style in this video, it's prerenaissance already if you ask me.
Shields became obsolete around 1400 when armour became so performant, that it offered men another hand to wield longer & heavier weapons. Not only in tournaments but also warfare.
Great video! I am delighted to find about this event

this is soooooooo cool!!! had no idea people still did this! I was coming up with new games to keep my baby stallion interested in school work and thought of justing! we've been hitting teacher's heads painted in foam blocks stuck to a bending pole! LOL! I came online to see if there were any cheap lances sold for costumes and found this! THUMBS UP for everyone that keeps this alive! and thanks to those who filmed and shared it too!
I might be wrong, but I replayed 0:50-0:52 about 30 times and each time I watch it, I become more convinced that the knight that got hit fell off on purpose. There are some aspects to this sport that are real, like the lances and armor, etc. but I think there is a bit of choreography involved in this. After the hit, the knight could have easily rebounded, but he dropped his lanced, and continued leaning back on his own. Agree or disagree with me but this seems choreographed, but still very cool.
@jasperkang well what you have to remember is that they are taking quite a bit of force. The momentum of the horse and knigth with armour is all being transfured into him while he is moving with reletively the same momentum but in the opposite direction. Being it with that much force would leave anyone dazed so there would be a delay in his recovery time
@jasperkang sorry dude, you ARE wrong :) you see an appr. 3 mm thick armour HAS weight. Consider that without amour he could rebound, but that 35-45 pounds makes it much more harder :)
@jasperkang He'd been struck. He's suppose to lean back. (Or may have been dazed) Part of the training. The dismounting of the other guy is the BIG point gainer, but a strike is good. One strike (or attempt,) per pass. The new series on the History Chanel, Full Metal Jousting, explains rules, etc.

This should be so much bigger than it is. It's a shame it's so unknown. i'd never have expected it to take off in America though, since of all places, there wasn't an America when people were doing this back in the day.
knights and jousting really should be left to where it began and not in an indoor arena, where is the castle?? where are the rolling hills and dales? where is the authenticity!? Maybe we should do our own version of American football and mess with that!!
@DeeJayCarl1968 The authenticity is in man and horse going up against man and horse in a test of skill, strength, resiliance and big hairy balls. You'd certainly need big balls to get in the saddle and ride a horse at the gallop at another guy holding a lance, blunted or not. That stuff's gotta hurt.
Ok, this is awesome. I personally find getting on a horse a matter that takes some courage. Last time I tried it the horse pretty much did what it wanted and I was happy that he mainly wanted to walk around.
Would be great to see this as Olympic sport. International appeal will grow, like other sports (Curling, Judo). The sport is deep, incorporating not just knights, but also squires, smiths, horses, etc. Imagine the national heroism bestowed upon prevailing knights. The commercial opportunity is great. Sir Lancelot endorses Round Table Pizza. Mmm. People may be inspired to learn history or even practice a chivalry in the modern age. SCA has laid the groundwork. Who knows someone on the IOC?
badowner there was a style with the hard lances we called light armour you would hit a big shield instead of a grided grand guard
besides when your in that suit your flexability is greatly reduced so all you really need is a 10ft pine dowel with a 1ft balsa just so you know I am the guy stoping the horses coming toward the camera ( with a fractured L3 from doing this sport a month before
this is so degrading to the english jousting comps, america always has the way to make something shit, just like your cars. SHIT. Fuck US thanks for the recession arseholes!
Full contact.. yeh, but I would also want to see REAL medieval lances made with thick wood. Besides that the competitors were great... amazing sport.. we need more of those.. by the way are the lances light or is it just me? shouldn't they be much heavier and bigger?
yes and the lances weren't made of rubbish as in the medieval time the lances were sharp (sometimes) and made of hard wood. and Great Knights could unseat another knight VERY neatly unlike this, the lances didnt break so easily
