I have the album ''SKIN BURNS'' By Roy Burns------MAGICAL,it's SOOO GOOD!!--He is one of the best up there with Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson,Joe Morello,Ed Shaughnessy,Butch Miles, and all the REAL Big Band drummers-----Technique and chops---He is one of the few left.A shame he doesn't want to play anymore, but I do understand.Luv ya.Roy.
I recently had reason to contact Aquarian via email over a customer service issue. An HOUR later, my email was answered and I was directed to call Mr. Burns himself. He answered and was beyond professional. I was astounded that, in the day and age, Aquarian cared enough about a customer service issue to actually have the founder respond personally. I am super impressed. Not to mention that it was awesome to speak with a legend.
I had the pleasure of backing Roy Burns several times at jazz festivals with the FALCONAIRES Big Band/Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Burns never ceased to amaze me with his tasty solos and use of the cymbals. Most of all, Mr. Burns was a true gentleman. Pete Rosa
@unlikeanyotherhuman i was simply trying to help out the cat who asked what he was doing. but it seems we have someone who likes to jump the gun, don't we now? gawrsh . if i was wrong well, i will stand corrected. Roy Burns is one of those i discovered among the most under rated.
I attented a Roy Burns Clinic. He put me right beside his drums and asked me to close my eyes. He did a roll from slow to very fast. He asked me to guess what it was. It was double stroke but it was so even it had to be a fast single stroke. He then did it again, with my eyes opened, it was a left hand single stroke. His palm was wide open, he only used his thumb. He said it took him an hour a day for 5 years. 35 years later I still can't do it. Thanx for posting and cheers to the master.
@ 2:20 , what is he doing with his left hand? I like it. And I'd like to learn how to do it. But I just can't tell. Anybody care to educate a young aspiring drummer? lol
Roy has lived across the street from me for the last 40 years. I was pretty spoiled as a kid growing up in the 70's listening to him practice in his garage. I used to just stand outside and listen in amazement.
Interesting solo but Roy missed the tom roll parts. Those are the best parts of drum solos. And i'm saddened that the Famous Gregg Potter of all drummers send me a busted Aquarian head! I wish The company has a good replacement warranty. Is Roy the owner founder of Aquarian? Thanks,Brainy,Brainman Media(BMI)
Roy is the one of the greatest guys I've ever known. Met him many times, worked in a shop selling his Aquarian merchandise, talking to him regularly. As a drummer, he taught me alot, doing clinics across the country. Even came to my Jr. High and High School when I was a kid. He was Benny Goodmans drummer for a while, the drummer for the band on the Merv Griffin show, subbed on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and did way too many studio and tour gigs with famous artists to name. Class act
@Jaklaps The Peavy drums he was playing back then when this was filmed, were used because they used his drum heads, along with Fibes, Orange County and more. Those were not the cheap ass peavy drums you usually see today, but were the high dollar, top end maple drums they made back in the 90's. They were excellent drums and used by alot of major drummers on tour and in the studio.
The drummer in my band studied with Roy in the 90s, and we saw him at NAMM this year. You WON'T find a nicer, more polite guy - and WHAT A DRUMMER. Further, he remembered every little detail about my drummer's life - where he worked, his wife, etc. What a class guy. I agree with the poster who said kids won't EVER enjoy Roy's artistry, as well as the kindness in his heart.
I met Roy at NAMM yesterday. What a pleasure. It was his 54th wedding anniversary. All these young drummers walking by not knowing who he was, watching me get my pic with him. If they only knew what true greatness was standing there in front of them. Thanks for your time with me and for your brilliant playing and education, Roy.
I met Roy many years ago at a drum clinic at Monty's Music in Villa Park IL. He's a true master of the set, a soft spoken gentleman, and proof of what the knowledge of the rudiments can do for you. He gave us all a copy of his album, "Drum Set Artistry" I still have it, and I listen to it regularly. The fidelity is fantastic, and the cymbals sound like you are standing right in front of them. The classic solo track, "Timetable" is on it, with a blistering jazz ride.

Saw him back in the early 70's at a clinic. Blew me away. Still remember how engaging he was.
He did a solo and everyone was so enraptured that we forgot to clap. He finished, looked at us and said, 'you can clap now.' We did!! This is kewl.
Wonder what kind of drumheads he's using? :D

This guy could out-solo me using a bottom hi hat cymbal, no tom heads, a cracked snare shell, a cookie sheet for a cymbal, and one brush stick.
